Yooka-Replaylee to get highly-requested 60fps mode on Switch 2 in upcoming update

Yooka-Replaylee is an interesting remake/reboot/reimagining of Playtonic’s well-liked through flawed mascot platformer, taking the original release and improving upon it in a myriad of ways. Unfortunately, due to supply constraints with the Nintendo Switch 2’s dev kits at the time, Replaylee launched at just 30fps on the handheld. Finally, with more time to familiarise themselves with the toolkit, Playtonic have now confirmed that Yooka-Replaylee will soon be getting a 60fps update.

Making the announcement via a riddle / poem of sorts, the team at Playtonic all-but-confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Yooka-Replaylee is slated to receive a 60fps patch, taking to BlueSky to write:

“I was told that I played alright.

Yet performance didn’t take flight.

Once I stumbled. Soon I’ll soar.

Silky smooth like never before.

What am I?”

This, in combination with previous posts heavily referencing the number 60, and it is quite obvious what the team are teasing.

In case you missed it, prior to the game’s launch the team at Playtonic released a statement regarding the Switch 2’s performance, writing back then: “Due to limited time with the development kits, we're investigating the possibility of implementing a performance mode to follow some time post launch.”

While it was a shame to see Yooka-Replaylee limited on the Switch 2 at launch, this long-awaited announcement is exciting nonetheless. It will be interesting to see whether the update adds a separate 60fps option, or if it’ll become the new standard.

Blizzard forgot to remove 30FPS frame rate cap for Overwatch Switch 2 Edition

Earlier this week, Blizzard surprise-dropped the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Overwatch, promising improved visuals and, crucially, an upgrade to 60FPS gameplay. Unfortunately, the update has not brought the performance improvements expected. 

Within hours of the Switch 2 edition of Overwatch rolling out, fans began pointing out that the advertised 60FPS mode was not in the game at all. Many logged in to find that the game remains locked at 30FPS in both docked and handheld modes, although the game's resolution and visuals had clearly improved.

In its own testing, Eurogamer found that the game ran at a solid framerate with no fluctuations, but the 30FPS cap still lingered from the original Switch 1 version of the game, creating a sluggish experience compared to other consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Blizzard has already confirmed that it is aware of the issue and is in the process of fixing. However, there is no timeline for the update yet. This is the second Switch 2 upgrade that has been fumbled under Microsoft's leadership. Last year, Skyrim also received a Switch 2 upgrade, but Bethesda opted to not include a 60FPS mode, despite the Switch 2 being perfectly capable of delivering that frame rate. A couple of months later, Bethesda fixed this with a 60FPS performance mode.

KitGuru Says: 60FPS gameplay was the highlight feature of this update, so to see the game release and for that option to not even be present in the game, is a massive oversight. Perhaps it is time for Microsoft to reinvest in Quality Assurance across its studios, rather than gutting teams further in a chase for greater profit margins.

Co-op roguelite Serious Sam: Shatterverse officially announced

While in many ways a classic of the early 2000s FPS space, Serious Sam has had a bit of a mixed past with many of its more recent releases failing to live up to the series’ legacy. That said, in a surprise announcement, publisher Devolver Digital and Dead By Daylight’s Behaviour Interactive have officially unveiled Serious Sam: Shatterverse – a co-op focused first person rougelite.

Releasing an official announcement trailer comprised of both cinematic and gameplay snippets, Devolver Digital officially unveiled Serious Sam: Shatterverse: a “co-op roguelite FPS for 1 – 5 players” in which you’ll “blast through shifting universes, stack wild boons, bend the rules with run modifiers, and hunt Mental's deadliest forces.”

Unlike the mainline entries which are developed by Croteam, Shatterverse is being worked on by Behaviour Interactive – the studio best known for creating the highly-successful Dead By Daylight series. That said, Shatterverse looks nothing like the team’s previous output, with the first-person shooter taking a lower-poly retro aesthetic more akin to the franchise’s earlier entries.

Neither a price nor a release date (aside from a vague 2026) have been announced for the game, however the team did confirm that when it does launch, Serious Sam: Shatterverse will land on PC; Xbox Series X|S and PS5 – meaning no Switch 2 version (at least for now). 

As mentioned, while the Serious Sam series is a bit of a mixed bag overall, Shatterverse looks set to be a fun FPS roguelite from a team who is intimately familiar with how to do online co-op. Hopefully the upcoming release proves to be the best entry in many years. We will have to wait and see.

Assassin’s Creed Unity finally gets its highly-requested 60fps patch on consoles

To this day, Assassin’s Creed Unity remains one of the most ambitious entries in the series, with the PlayStation 4 / Xbox One title buckling somewhat under the weight of Ubisoft’s dense 18th century Paris. Despite launching with an uncapped framerate, Unity would later be updated with a 30fps cap. While appreciated at the time, fans have been hoping for a current-gen patch for quite a while. Finally, following the likes of AC: Syndicate, Origins; Odyssey and more, Assassin’s Creed Unity has gotten a 60fps update.

Making the announcement as part of a big brand update, the team at Ubisoft unveiled a ton of new details surrounding current and future Assassin’s Creed titles. Alongside updates on the likes of codename HEXE and INVICTUS, Ubisoft confirmed that AC: Unity is finally getting its long-awaited framerate boost on console, writing:

“A free 60 FPS patch for Assassin's Creed Unity is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 [today]! We know some of you have been waiting for it for a long time, so get ready to re‑experience 18th century Paris and Arno's fancy parkour moves with more smoothness on consoles!”

Unfortunately, as with most of Ubisoft’s 60fps upgrades, the game’s visuals have not been touched, meaning even on PS5 users will be stuck at just 900p.

Still, having the game finally run at a locked 60fps is certainly welcome regardless. It will be interesting to see whether they have plans to release similar patches for the few remaining AC titles still locked to 30fps.

Free-to-play FPS Warface to shut down after 13 years

Warface is an oft-forgotten free-to-play FPS developed by Crytek of Crysis and the CryEngine fame. Launched all the way back in 2013, the title received pretty substantial updates over the years, adding a Battle Royale mode and eventually bringing the title over to the OG Switch (while also undergoing a number of development studio switch-ups). After over a decade of operation however, the current studio ‘MY.GAMES’ have now confirmed that the title will be shutting down.

Taking to their Steam page to make the announcement, the team at MY.GAMES wrote: “Friends! After many years together, we have made the difficult decision to begin the sunset process for Warface: Clutch. This choice was not easy for us — Warface: Clutch has been an important part of our journey, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported the game throughout its long life.”

Said to be sunset in order “to focus on future developments” all in-game purchases have now been disabled. While Warface remains playable for now, servers for PC players will be shut down on the 27th of May, followed shortly by the console version on the 25th of August.

Alongside the announcement, the team shared a lengthy FAQ, discussing the reasons for the game’s closure; refund policies and more, the full version of which can be found HERE.

While Warface launched at a time when it did have the potential to take on the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield, the industry as a whole has changed substantially in the decade+ since, and so it is not surprising to see Warface finally being sunset.

Bethesda adds 60FPS mode to Skyrim on Switch 2

A couple of months ago when the Switch 2 update for Skyrim began rolling out, fans were immediately disappointed. Despite the massive jump in power from the Switch 1 to the Switch 2, performance remained capped at 30FPS, while storage requirements grew for minimal visual gain. Now with its latest patch, Bethesda is addressing the problem. 

The new 1.2 patch for Skyrim on the Switch 2 has added a 60FPS mode, giving users an option to toggle between ‘prioritise visuals' or ‘prioritise performance'. The new performance mode will allow players to achieve a much smoother 60FPS frame rate target. On top of that, the ‘prioritise visuals' mode has also been properly capped at 30FPS, which should fix up issues with frame pacing and hitching.

Other important fixes in this new update include:

Crashes and Performance Fixes:
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when reading “The Crimson Dirks Vol. 4” book for the “Tilted Scales” quest in German.
  • Fixed an audio-related crash.
  • Fixed a crash, infinite load, and game freeze that sometimes occurred when rapidly selecting “Load” multiple times in the pause menu.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when the “Transmute Ore” spell was repeatedly cast outside of the Haltered Stream Camp.
Improved FPS performance drops that occurred in the following locations:
  • during the Hide and Seek quest in Kynesgrove
  • during combat at Secunda’s Kiss
  • when discovering the “Drelas’ Cottage” location
  • when engaged in combat with a giant at the Talking Stone Camp.
Visuals Issues Fixes:
  • Viewing water planes from a distance or within menus caused them to shift up and down.
  • Distant aspen trees appeared with a blue tint.
  • Transitioning out of caves caused an outline of the entrance to linger during the fade-to-back loading screen.
User Interface Fixes:
  • Switching between mouse and controller mode while in dialogue or the Help menu, caused different options to be highlighted.
  • Switching between mouse and controller mode while in help menus or user hints, did not dynamically update callout prompts.
  • The “Ready/Sheathe” option was missing from the Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls menu.
  • The “Delete” prompt remained grayed-out within the Load menu when swapping between mouse and controller mode.
  • Deleting a save in the Save/Load menus reset the highlighted selection to the top of the menu list.
  • While in mouse mode, the cursor remained stuck within a smaller section of the screen when changing between docked/undocked modes or interfacing with GameChat.
Controls Fixes:
  • The “Eagle Eye” Archery perk remained active after switching between mouse and controller mode.
  • Holding down the Right Joystick while reassigning a button caused that button to disappear from the Controls list.
  • The Joy-Con 2 controllers provided haptic feedback while in mouse mode.
  • Buttons became unresponsive when controls were remapped while moving the Joy-Con 2 controllers in mouse mode.
  • Rotating the map in mouse mode was slower and less smooth than in controller mode.
Audio Issue Fix:
  • Scrolling SFX continued to play while holding up or down on the Left Joystick or buttons at the top or bottom of the Save/Load menus.

The new update is available now. As a reminder, if you own Skyrim on the Switch 1, you need to first upgrade to the Anniversary Edition before you can access the Switch 2 upgrades.
