Each week, the Epic Games Store gives away a title or two for free to all those with an Epic Games account. Available to add to your library right now, Epic is currently offering up the top-down Hotline Miami-esque rogue-lite shooter OTXO – free for the next week.

Available to add to your library from now until the 6th of August, OTXO is a “fast-paced, brutal, and dark roguelite filled with precise but savage gunplay and time-bending slow motion.”

Clearly inspired by the likes of Hotline Miami, OTXO features a similar top-down aesthetic, twin-stick mechanics and a 1-hit-kill approach to gameplay. Visually, the main difference between the two is the fact that OTXO has embraced a black, white and red colour scheme – making kills feel that much more brutal.

Being a rouge-lite, OTXO’s gameplay loop is different to Hotline Miami’s with the former having you make your way through 8 areas consisting of “a randomly laid out selection of rooms” based on “over 150 hand-crafted” options.

This does change how the game feels quite a bit, with players likely to approach each level with far more care, compared to Hotline Miami’s ‘One More Try’ mentality.

Either way, OTXO is worth checking out by both fans of Hotline Miami and roguelites in general, so make sure to add it to your library before the 6th of August – wherein it will be replaced by the narrative-focused adventure title ‘Beacon Pines‘ alongside the first-person co-op puzzler ‘We Were Here Together’.

While in many ways a classic of the early 2000s FPS space, Serious Sam has had a bit of a mixed past with many of its more recent releases failing to live up to the series’ legacy. That said, in a surprise announcement, publisher Devolver Digital and Dead By Daylight’s Behaviour Interactive have officially unveiled Serious Sam: Shatterverse – a co-op focused first person rougelite.

Releasing an official announcement trailer comprised of both cinematic and gameplay snippets, Devolver Digital officially unveiled Serious Sam: Shatterverse: a “co-op roguelite FPS for 1 – 5 players” in which you’ll “blast through shifting universes, stack wild boons, bend the rules with run modifiers, and hunt Mental's deadliest forces.”

Unlike the mainline entries which are developed by Croteam, Shatterverse is being worked on by Behaviour Interactive – the studio best known for creating the highly-successful Dead By Daylight series. That said, Shatterverse looks nothing like the team’s previous output, with the first-person shooter taking a lower-poly retro aesthetic more akin to the franchise’s earlier entries.

Neither a price nor a release date (aside from a vague 2026) have been announced for the game, however the team did confirm that when it does launch, Serious Sam: Shatterverse will land on PC; Xbox Series X|S and PS5 – meaning no Switch 2 version (at least for now). 

As mentioned, while the Serious Sam series is a bit of a mixed bag overall, Shatterverse looks set to be a fun FPS roguelite from a team who is intimately familiar with how to do online co-op. Hopefully the upcoming release proves to be the best entry in many years. We will have to wait and see.
