Playtonic Games teases what seems to be a Yooka-Laylee Kart Racer

2 June 2026 at 09:15

While the Yooka-Laylee series has had its ups and downs, the team at Playtonic Games have put in the work to continuously refine their platforming chops; recently releasing their pseudo-remake Yooka-Replaylee. Similar to the mascot platformers which inspired the series, Yooka-Laylee looks set to receive a surprise kart racing spin-off.

In the lead-up to this week’s onslaught of video game announcements, the team at Playtonic Games have been cryptically teasing something related to Yooka-Laylee (as they have done in the past). Taking to their socials, the indie studio published a couple of playful clips alongside the the poems:

β€œA green reptile, a purple bat,

Are plotting something… fancy that!

Collecting quills is far too slow,

There may be faster ways to go…”

Yooka-Laylee Kart

Based on the wording, the clips shared and the fact that the end of Yooka-Replaylee included stickers of the protagonists driving race karts, it can be safe to assume that we’ll be getting a Kart Racer next. Topping it all off, Playtonic also recently changed their social media profile picture to a close-up of Yooka’s eye looking suspiciously like a car headlight.

The Yooka-Laylee series has always tried to embody the spirit of classic platformers, and so it makes perfect sense for them to shift gears to a different genre next.

Yooka-Replaylee to get highly-requested 60fps mode on Switch 2 in upcoming update

16 April 2026 at 09:30

Yooka-Replaylee is an interesting remake/reboot/reimagining of Playtonic’s well-liked through flawed mascot platformer, taking the original release and improving upon it in a myriad of ways. Unfortunately, due to supply constraints with the Nintendo Switch 2’s dev kits at the time, Replaylee launched at just 30fps on the handheld. Finally, with more time to familiarise themselves with the toolkit, Playtonic have now confirmed that Yooka-Replaylee will soon be getting a 60fps update.

Making the announcement via a riddle / poem of sorts, the team at Playtonic all-but-confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Yooka-Replaylee is slated to receive a 60fps patch, taking to BlueSky to write:

β€œI was told that I played alright.

Yet performance didn’t take flight.

Once I stumbled. Soon I’ll soar.

Silky smooth like never before.

What am I?”

Yooka-Replaylee 60fps

This, in combination with previous posts heavily referencing the number 60, and it is quite obvious what the team are teasing.

In case you missed it, prior to the game’s launch the team at Playtonic released a statement regarding the Switch 2’s performance, writing back then: β€œDue to limited time with the development kits, we're investigating the possibility of implementing a performance mode to follow some time post launch.”

While it was a shame to see Yooka-Replaylee limited on the Switch 2 at launch, this long-awaited announcement is exciting nonetheless. It will be interesting to see whether the update adds a separate 60fps option, or if it’ll become the new standard.
