The Epic Games Store will give away two ‘Mystery Games’ next week

8 May 2026 at 10:15

Each week, the Epic Games Store gives away a title or two for free as part of the PC Storefront’s free game program. While the past few months of offerings have been somewhat low-key in nature, Epic appears set to give away something more noteworthy – teasing two ‘mysterious games’ arriving next week.

The Epic Games Store has historically upped the ante when it comes to giving away games for free around the time of major gaming / seasonal events. With Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest less than a month away, Epic appears to be ramping up its program.

Right now, all those with an Epic Games account can get their hands on the “role-puzzling adventure” Arranger as well as the shopkeeping simulator ‘Trash Goblin’.

Come Thursday the 14th of May however, these titles will be replaced by two ‘mystery game’ offerings. Typically, Epic will advertise the following week’s free games as soon as the current week’s title is available to claim.

Given that Epic has chosen to hide next week’s offerings, it is safe to assume that the titles will be of relative substantiveness. That said, with the sheer number and variety of titles which they have given away over the years, next week’s free title could be pretty much anything. We will have to wait and see.

Fortnite Save the World is going free-to-play almost a decade on from release

12 March 2026 at 12:00

Before there was Fortnite Battle Royale, there was Fortnite Save the World – a tower defence styled co-op experience in which you must build and protect your base from waves of zombies. With the explosive popularity of the then-side mode ‘Fortnite BR’, support for Save the World was stripped back. Almost a decade on from its original paid release, Fortnite Save the World is now officially going free-to-play.

Making the surprise announcement on their blog, the team at Epic Games revealed that “Save the World is going free-to-play on April 16, welcoming even more players to join the fight on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Cloud, and Nintendo Switch 2.”

Seeing as how it was initially released as a paid product, current owners of the game will continue to receive their founder's benefits, including the all-important V-Bucks. Additionally, players are set to receive Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold on April 16 “as a thank you for the last nine years of world saving.”

As part of the announcement, Epic also unveiled a community goal in anticipation of the upcoming release, with pre-registration milestones being tied in-game rewards.

Full details on this free-to-play shift (including a full FAQ) can be found HERE, but one final interesting part of the announcement was confirmation that Save the World isn’t coming to smartphones nor the Nintendo Switch 1.

Following the rise in popularity of their free-to-play BR mode, it was expected that Save the World would eventually be folded into the wider experience. Though almost a decade later than expected, Epic Games is finally once again paying attention to Save the World. It will be interesting to see how much support the mode will receive moving forward.

Fortnite is officially coming back to the Google Play Store as all disputes are settled

5 March 2026 at 13:00

For years now, Epic Games and Google have been engaged in a back and forth, with the Fortnite maker seeing its titles removed from Android’s Play Store, necessitating users to find alternate means to play the popular Battle Royale on Android. Finally, after countless court sessions and an evolving environment, Google and Epic have finally settled their differences, with Fortnite set to return to the Google Play Store “soon.”

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that “Google is opening up Android all the way with robust support for competing stores, competing payments, and a better deal for all developers. So, we've settled all of our disputes worldwide. THANKS GOOGLE!”

As a result, Sweeney revealed that “Fortnite will return to Google Play Store worldwide soon. Epic Games Store continues supporting Android worldwide alongside Windows and Mac, and installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026.”

Alongside this, Google themselves released a lengthy Android developers blog, confirming the details of this “new era for choice and openness” which includes:

  • Expanded billing choice on Google Play for users and developers
  • A new Registered App Stores program
  • Lower pricing and new programs to support developers

The blog post concluded with a direct reference to the aforementioned Epic Games dispute, with Google stating: “With these updates, we have also resolved our disputes worldwide with Epic Games. We believe these changes will make for a stronger Android ecosystem with even more successful developers and higher-quality apps and games available across more form factors for everyone. We look forward to our continued work with the developer community to build the next generation of digital experiences.”

While there is no denying that Epic Games engaged in this years-long legal battle for self-serving reasons, the final result does seem to be one that will benefit the end users more than before. Full details on these changes and their planned rollout can be found HERE.
