Square Enix Has Yet To Release Final Fantasy Resonance, But Modder Fixed One Of Its Biggest Issues 1 Month Ahead

16 September 2026 at 10:00

A scene from Final Fantasy Resonance shows a character named Gilgamesh standing on an ancient bridge with two other characters, with on-screen text saying 'BIG BRIDGE!'.

With Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix is bringing back the popular JRPG franchise to its roots, with a gorgeous HD-2D presentation and turn-based combat. Although this new rendition of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is setting up to be one of the best JRPGs of the year on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, it's not without issues. While this didn't really bother me during my gamescom 2026 demo session, playing the public demo released earlier this month highlighted how vague the skill descriptions are. Instead of hoping Square Enix would fix the issue, one […]

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Gets Surprise Overhaul 4 Years After Launch, As Mod Ports Over Highly Requested Nightreign Mobility

15 September 2026 at 15:05

A dramatic landscape banner with the text 'Elden Ring: Night Reign Movement' set against a misty, moonlit ruin.

Compared to the first entries in the Dark Souls series (whose slow, deliberate pace has heavily inspired the upcoming Guns of Eschaton), Elden Ring is a much faster game. While it doesn't hit the extremes Bloodborne does, the open-world game developed by FromSoftware accommodates the open-world design of The Lands Between with a more agile character who can also ride the steed Torrent to traverse through the world quickly. This enhanced mobility was the basis for the one seen in Elden Ring: Nightreign, which many have long wished to see in the 2022 game. Well over 4 years since release, […]

Daniel Vávra Maintains That NVIDIA DLSS 5 Is the Future, as It Allows KCD2 to Reach the Intended Aesthetics

14 September 2026 at 13:30

A comparison of a portrait photo and three game character renderings labeled 'VANILLA,' 'NVIDIA DLSS 5,' and 'SLOP' showcasing different visual enhancements to the game Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

Czech veteran developer Daniel Vávra, known for his work on the Mafia and Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchises, has never been afraid to step into controversies. Back in 2018, just after the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance launched, Vávra was accused of having pro-Gamergate views, which caused some journalists and users to boycott the game. After an article on the subject was published on the now-defunct website PC PowerPlay, the developer called out the author for creating a clickbait article that failed to seek his comments. More recently, though, Vávra has been an outspoken supporter of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology. […]

Square Enix Left Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Broken On PC For 12 Years, But Fix Finally Solves High FPS Issues

14 September 2026 at 09:28

A character from 'Final Fantasy XIII' with pink hair and armor is in an action pose inside a futuristic setting.

During the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation, Japanese developers and publishers released tons of console ports on Steam, but PC players were often left with subpar releases that never got fixed to take advantage of the more powerful hardware available to gamers. Square Enix is far from the only offender in this regard, but its ports of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy still required fixes from the community to become better PC ports. And with a new fix, the three forgotten games have now reached a state that's as close as it gets to proper, modern ports. Over the weekend, KartinX released […]

Blood of Dawnwalker mod removes the game’s best feature

By: Aftab Ali
5 September 2026 at 11:31

The Blood of Dawnwalker’s best feature is its 30-day countdown, and modders have already gutted it.

The time-passing system is what separates it from RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077, where you’re told your character has weeks to live yet somehow spend months chasing side quests without consequence. Blood of Dawnwalker actually commits to the pressure.

A mod that removes the point of the game

The top mod on Nexus Mods stretches the timer from 30 days to 90 and removes the time cost from levelling up. That means you can do everything the game offers in a single playthrough, no trade-offs, no urgency, no reason to ever choose.

image 4
Screenshot from Nexus Mods

That’s the entire design gone. Big quests are meant to eat your limited time, forcing you to play a different version of Coen each playthrough, one with different priorities and different calls to make on people like Brencis. Strip that away, and you’re left with a generic RPG that plays exactly like everything else on the shelf. You lose the replay value, too.

It’s like cutting heroes from Dota 2, or guns from Call of Duty. Technically still a game. Just not the one anyone made.

So why buy it, install a mod that deletes its core system, and then play a worse version of it? If the timer isn’t for you, that’s fine, but removing it isn’t fixing the game. It’s just a different, weaker game wearing the same skin.

Bethesda’s New 1.7.99 Skyrim Update May Break Your Modded Save, but You Can Freeze the Game Version – Here’s How

20 August 2026 at 17:00

The Dragonborn stands on a cliff overlooking a snowy mountain landscape in 'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim'.

Bethesda Game Studios has just released a new update (version 1.7.99) for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition. The patch is mainly focused on increasing console mod storage limits and bringing more Creations improvements and fixes, but if you're a PC player currently on a modded playthrough, it may wreak havoc on your save. Bethesda has stated that this particular patch should not affect load orders, but the studio's own advice to back up saves as a precaution is a reminder that Skyrim updates have historically broken mod compatibility before, most notably with the original Anniversary Edition update in […]

Bethesda warns fans that Fallout 4 and Skyrim will be getting new updates

17 August 2026 at 08:30

Typically, the announcement of a new video game update is met with excitement, as fans look forward to whatever new content / fixes are in store. When it comes to Bethesda though, updates are far less celebrated due to the fact that they often break mods and can even lead to new issues. In service of giving fans a heads-up, BGS has announced that both Fallout 4 and Skyrim will be receiving updates this year.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Bethesda Game Studios page gave fans the following warning:

“On Tuesday, August 18th, a patch will be coming to Fallout 4 focusing on general Creations improvements. As a precaution, prior to these updates we encourage players to log into your game save if you haven't done so in a while or manually save your load order. Once your load order is saved, you'll be able to re-download your entire Creations list at once when the update is live.”

Bethesda Fallout

The team also confirmed that an update to Skyrim will be arriving at some point in the near future, with details promised to be shared “soon.”

As mentioned, Bethesda more so than any other developer needs to be conscious of its update frequency owing to the fact that countless mods can be made unusable at the press of a button – requiring direct support from the developer in order to get it working again.

While it appears as though this upcoming Fallout 4 update won’t offer anything new, it is at least encouraging to see Bethesda giving players warning ahead of time.

FromSoftware Attempted Ray Tracing with Elden Ring, But It Pales in Comparison to Dark Souls 3 with Modded Path Tracing

12 August 2026 at 10:38

A character in knight armor explores a misty, overgrown ruin path in Dark Souls 3

Although FromSoftware has created some of the best action RPGs of all time, never ceding to the pressure to create more marketable titles, the Japanese studio is not exactly known for pushing the technical boundaries of games. In Elden Ring, the studio led by Hidetaka Miyazaki did try its hand at ray tracing with ray-traced ambient occlusion and shadows, but what it has achieved pales in comparison to the modded path tracing that is coming soon to Dark Souls 3. The third entry in the series is getting remastered lighting thanks to modder Ganaboy, who is working on a new […]

DIY modder creates 'heat engine computing device' powered by a Stirling engine, can run Tetris, Snake, and Pong — 80 MHz processor operates on just 150 milliwatts of power

In one of the most unique DIY projects, Reddit user PickentCode has created what can be described as a completely off-the-grid "heat engine computing device." Instead of relying on solar panels or a battery pack, the creator went in a completely different direction, building a custom steampunk-inspired microcomputer which features a miniature Stirling engine to power the hand-crafted wooden console.

Originally patented in 1816 by the Scottish minister and inventor Robert Stirling, a Stirling engine converts heat directly into mechanical energy. By applying a flame to one end of a sealed cylinder, the temperature difference forces the air inside to expand and contract. This cycle pushes a piston that spins the flywheel, which can be used to power a simple generator that converts the mechanical rotation into usable electricity.

"The entire project took about a month to design, build, and program," PickentCode told Tom's Hardware. They first conceptualized a 3D layout using Blender before constructing the physical case out of wood. They even went ahead and utilized a DIY laser engraver to etch a portrait of Robert Stirling and his original 1816 engine patent sketch directly onto the wooden side panels. For the smaller structural elements, the electronic housings and the keycaps were custom 3D printed, while the decorative pipes winding across the frame were made from old shower tubing and some gold paint.

The brains of the system are an ESP32 C3 microcontroller paired with a 2.42-inch monochrome OLED display with a 128x64 resolution, alongside a 16-key keypad. The electrical output of the generator is stabilized using small capacitors wired into the circuit. One can also actively monitor the voltage output using the analog voltmeter, which is wired in parallel, and the two toggle switches mounted on the front panel can be used to turn on the main circuit and the voltmeter.

Running an electronic device, in this case a microcomputer, purely on fire comes with obvious energy limitations. The model Stirling engine can produce only 150 milliwatts of power, and to stay within this tiny power budget, the creator implemented certain hardware and software optimizations. For instance, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were completely disabled, and the screen brightness was kept low to conserve every milliwatt. PickentCode also tuned the ESP32's CPU frequency, reducing it down to just 80 MHz when updating the screen or interpreting opcodes, going all the way down to just 10 MHz while sitting idle in the main loop.

Despite the limitations, the computer is fully functional. It runs a custom CHIP-8 virtual machine preloaded with classic gaming ROMs like Tetris, Snake, and Pong. Impressively, it also features a built-in code editor, allowing users to type in CHIP-8 opcodes directly to write and execute their own custom programs on the fly.

Stirling engines are not exactly new to the world of computing. Earlier this year, we covered a project by Windows development guru Dave Plummer who showcased a cooling solution that used a small Stirling engine to convert waste heat from an AMD Threadripper system into mechanical energy, which was used to spin the engine's flywheel. While it isn’t an actual solution to an overheating chipset, it is claimed that the flywheel can spin up to about 200 RPM in a 20C/68F environment.

CAPCOM’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 Becomes A True Co-Op Monster Hunter Soon, As DD2gether Mod Arrives Before Dark Arisen

7 August 2026 at 11:36

A hooded character in 'Dragon's Dogma 2' aiming a magical bow at a creature in a mountainous landscape.

With its emphasis on fighting against big enemies like Cyclops and Ogres, the original Dragon's Dogma often felt like a sort of cross between an open-world RPG and the Monster Hunter series. Dragon's Dogma 2 followed in the footsteps of its predecessor (perhaps even a bit too much), delivering the same feel as its predecessor. Soon, the two CAPCOM series will get closer than ever before on PC thanks to the Alpha launch of the DD2gether mod, which introduces co-op multiplayer ahead of the Dark Arisen expansion on October 9 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and […]

Nintendo Won’t Bring Pokémon Red and Blue to PC, but a Recompilation Just Brought Them Over With HD-2D Voxel Visuals

3 August 2026 at 15:01

A character in the game 'Pokémon 3D' stands in a room filled with brown shelves and a computer, interacting with other characters.

Despite having been released a long time ago, the original Game Boy versions of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, and Pokémon Yellow remain some of the most beloved entries in the successful franchise. With Nintendo having no intention of releasing any of its exclusive games on PC, chances of the games developed by Game Freak ever hitting the platform are non-existent, but it is now possible to enjoy native versions of these classic games on PC with a slew of improvements, including stunning 3D voxel visuals that make these games feel like HD-2D remakes of the original. The Gen1Recomp recompilation project […]

Hytale devs tease magic system, mod support and more ahead of Chapter 1 update

19 July 2026 at 12:22

Hytale’s developers have shared a major progress update, confirming that Chapter 1 is on track to launch within the next two to three months. The update marks a shift towards RPG-style systems, including magic-based combat, giving players more structured progression alongside the game’s existing sandbox elements.

In the accompanying blog post, the team explains that Chapter 1 is designed to broaden what players can do moment‑to‑moment, adding new activities, mechanics and systems that push Hytale beyond crafting, building and survival. Magic is the headline addition, but Chapter 1 also lays the groundwork for future chapters by introducing new tech, new content pipelines and expanded gameplay loops.

The blog post also confirms that official mod support is finally on the way. A Mod Browser will arrive as part of Update 6, scheduled for release in the next few weeks, alongside Spectator Mode, Hardcore Mode, moving platforms and early implementation of cubic chunks. Some Chapter 1 features, such as real transparency and carryable objects, may ship ahead of schedule if the underlying tech is ready sooner.

Beyond Chapter 1, the developers outlined a broader timeline covering features in active development. Minigames, machinima tools and a new server‑side custom UI system based on NoesisGUI are expected within the next few months. Larger changes, including a full crafting rework planned for Chapter 2, remain further out. Other items like volumetric clouds, Runeforging and an overhaul of the Hytale Asset Editor are still in development with no confirmed release window yet.

KitGuru Says: Hypixel is making swift progress on Hytale after splitting off from Riot Games. Are you excited for the upcoming updates?

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Looks Like a Remaster on PC, as Shader Injector 2.0 Delivers Series’ Best Visuals

17 July 2026 at 09:19

A character from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth stands on a beach with the text 'Shader Injector MOD' overlaid.

With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, publisher Square Enix and director Naoki Hamaguchi released one of the best entries in the series to date on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, but the game is not without flaws. Among the biggest is the flat lighting which takes much away from this otherwise stunning recreation of Gaia, but this issue was recently addressed on PC with the Shader Injector mod, whose 2.0 version is now available to deliver the series' best visuals to date. The new version of the mod developed by David Matos, which can be downloaded […]

Pearl Abyss still exploring mod support and multiplayer for Crimson Desert

13 July 2026 at 12:30

Crimson Desert launched earlier this year to strongly positive reviews from players. While the game began development as a multiplayer title, it was later reworked to be a single-player experience instead. However, with the world being so massive, there has been some demand for co-op and as a result, Pearl Abyss is currently exploring bringing multiplayer components to the game, as well as mod support.

During a recent shareholder meeting, Pearl Abyss leadership acknowledged the demand for multiplayer. CEO Heo Jin‑young said the team is “studying” both the technical feasibility and gameplay implications of adding co‑op. However, he stressed that multiplayer is not something that can simply be bolted on, calling it “a major task” that requires reviewing server architecture, balance, platform stability and ongoing operations.

Crimson Desert Pearl

While there is no confirmed plan or timeline, Pearl Abyss says it is “continuously reviewing ways to allow users to enjoy the Crimson Desert IP for longer”, and that there is “room for a multiplayer mode” as part of that process.

Mod support was also addressed, with COO Lee Dong‑won saying the studio is “reviewing it broadly”. Pearl Abyss is considering approaches such as distributing official mods directly and offering in‑game toggles so players can enable or disable them easily. CEO Heo Jin‑young added that the team has been interested in mods since before launch, viewing them as a potential foundation for long‑term growth.

Mod support doesn’t automatically create a lasting community, but it does give players the tools to keep a game alive far beyond its launch window. That’s been true for everything from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy to Skyrim, Fallout and The Witcher, and even the wave of fan‑built games that emerged from Half‑Life during the 2000s. Side note, if you ever played Earth's Special Forces back in the day, we would probably be good friends.

KitGuru Says: Crimson Desert has been my favourite new game of the year so far. I'm not as interested in multiplayer, but mod support would be an absolutely fantastic addition, especially if it allows us to make changes to our in-game camps or add new items to find throughout the world.

Earlier this week, modder dddd5 released the Shader Injector mod for the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, addressing the flat lighting issues the game has had since its release and that remain one of the biggest visual issues of the second entry in the Remake series by Square Enix. Not content with having already competently addressed one of the biggest issues of the game, the Shader Injector mod is set to receive some significant improvements in the future, including bringing cutscene-like visual quality into regular gameplay via runtime API call interception. Crimson Desert could receive mod support in the future, claims Pearl Abyss CEO

31 March 2026 at 08:00

Prior to its release, Crimson Desert was easily one of the most anticipated new IPs for 2026, with the ambitious open-world action-adventure title garnering a ton of attention. While sentiment surrounding the game has cooled somewhat following its release, Crimson Desert has still found a large audience of fans. Alongside the announcement that the game has already sold over 5 million copies, Pearl Abyss’ CEO offered a bunch of hints for what could be in store for the future of Crimson Desert.

During the company’s most recent shareholder meeting, Pearl Abyss’ CEO Heo Jin-young responded to a number of investor queries. Alongside talk of a potential Switch 2 port for the title, the CEO was asked whether Crimson Desert had any plans for DLC in place.

According to Heo (as translated by ResetEra user ‘Neha’): “While expanding through paid expansions is good, there are also cases where expanding [free] content leads to more sales of the base game. We want to make strategic decisions that help Crimson Desert itself sell more.”

Crimson Desert Pearl

Interestingly, Heo was also asked about the potential for official modding support, to which the CEO responded: “The modding community is active, and since our game has a sandbox structure, supporting mods could be a strong advantage. To support mods, we would need to open up large parts of the engine, so while the development team is positive, there are no concrete plans yet.”

As mentioned by the CEO, Crimson Desert runs on Pearl Abyss’ own bespoke game engine, and so introducing modding tools is somewhat more complicated than flipping a switch. That said, offering such a feature could give the game a strong level of longevity.

Perhaps most curiously, Heo revealed that multiplayer was being considered for Crimson Desert prior to its launch, stating that “the development team did attempt to implement multiplayer internally, but given current hardware limitations, there are clear graphical sacrifices required.”

As mentioned, alongside these revelations, the CEO also spoke on the game’s sales success as well as a potential Switch 2 port – the full details for which can be found HERE.
