Mobile-exclusive DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY could come to PC claims Square Enix

7 April 2026 at 14:00

Square Enix have had a long history in the mobile gaming space, with the publisher porting many of its popular titles to the likes of Android and iOS. Following the launch of their most recent release – the mobile exclusive DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY – Square Enix have confirmed that they are “exploring the possibility of a PC version” though nothing is confirmed as of yet.

Taking part in an interview conducted by the publication Siliconera, DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY producer Naoya Matsumoto was asked about the possibility of bringing the mobile-exclusive title to the likes of the PC platform in future, “considering it must be played in Portrait Mode.”

According to Matsumoto, “We opted for the vertical screen because the game's concept is to be a ‘casual competitive game that anyone can easily play.' We determined that portrait mode was the most suitable choice because we prioritized controls that allow for casual, one-handed play on smartphones.”

Despite this, the producer did suggest that a wider release across more platforms is not out of the question, adding that “this constraint does not make a PC version impossible. While we cannot provide specific details at this time, we are currently exploring the possibility of a PC version.”

While far from official confirmation, the fact that Square Enix is ‘exploring’ the possibility means that it will quite likely find its way onto additional platforms eventually. Whether DISSIDIA DUELLUM would resonate with a wider audience remains to be seen, but given that the last major entry from a decade ago (Dissidia Final Fantasy NT) did eventually arrive on both PC and consoles, it is entirely possible.

We will have to wait and see, but in the meantime, DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY is available to download now on iOS and Android.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Dissidia sub-series? Is it more suited to mobile platforms? Would you want its console / PC release to be 1:1 with the mobile version, or should they turn it into a premium paid product? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Square Enix was the best games publisher in 2025 according to Metacritic rankings

26 March 2026 at 12:00

Last year, Metacritic's publisher rankings revealed SEGA to be the most successful game publisher in 2024 thanks to highly praised releases like Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Now, the rankings for 2025 have been released, with another Japanese publisher, Square Enix, topping the ranking.

For these rankings, Metacritic takes the average metascore for each publisher's games, then factors in the percentage of good reviews versus bad reviews to calculate which publisher fared best each year. For 2025, Square Enix ended up with 330.5 points, with an average released game rating of 84.

The full top ten is as follows:

  1. Square Enix (330.5 points)
  2. Gamirror Games (322.4 points)
  3. Capcom (322.2 points)
  4. Thunderful (306.8 points)
  5. Microsoft (305.7 points)
  6. Take-Two (304.0 points)
  7. Sega (303.9 points)
  8. Electronic Arts (302.9 points)
  9. Dotemu (302.2 points)
  10. Raw Fury (301.0 points)

This marks the third year in a row that a Japanese publisher has topped the rankings. Back in 2023, Capcom earned the top spot, followed by SEGA in 2024 and now Square Enix in 2025. Square Enix had a boost from a variety of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles launched in 2025.

The rankings next year should see Take-Two rising up a bit, as Grand Theft Auto 6 is due to launch this November. Interestingly, Microsoft also rose up a few spots in 2025, going from 9th place in 2024 to 5th place in 2025. Assuming titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears E-Day and Fable launch to good reviews, Microsoft may also see a boost in the rankings once this year is all said and done.

Yoshi-P comments on Final Fantasy franchise’s waning relevance

24 March 2026 at 11:00

Final Fantasy is one of the biggest and longest-running franchises in gaming, with its roots stretching all the way back to the 1980s. Despite this, the IP has fallen in popularity somewhat over the past few years. According to Square Enix’s Yoshi-P, one of the reasons for its fall in cache is due to the “release intervals for new titles” having “gotten longer.”

Taking part in a mini video documentary discussing the release of the free-to-play mobile battler ‘DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY’ long-time franchise producer/director Yoshi-P spoke pretty candidly on where the series is at currently, stating:

“The Final Fantasy series has an incredibly long history. I'm 53 now, and I've been playing since Final Fantasy 1 in real time. But for younger generations – people who grew up naturally accustomed to action-based combat and online competitive play – the recent entries in the series may have been harder to engage with.”

Yoshi-P Franchise

Yoshida continued, “Part of that is simply because I'm sorry to say . . . the release intervals for new titles have gotten longer, so some players haven't really had the chance to connect with the series the way older fans did. My hope is that both long-time Final Fantasy fans and those who love the characters themselves can enjoy this as a completely new kind of game.”

While it’s hard to imagine that the free-to-play DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY will be what brings the series back into the limelight, it is encouraging at least to know that Square Enix themselves are aware of just how long their Final Fantasy games have been taking. It will be interesting to see how long we will have to wait to hear about a potential Final Fantasy XVII.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Final Fantasy franchise currently? Will it ever rise back up to the top, or have too many other franchises surpassed it? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Dragon Quest X is Getting a “Conversational AI” Companion, Chatty Slimey, Powered by Google’s Gemini

23 March 2026 at 15:46

The image features the Google Gemini logo above three blue slime characters from the Dragon Quest game series in a grassy landscape.

Google and Square Enix announced a partnership over the weekend at a press event to bring the search engine's proprietary AI, Gemini, into Dragon Quest X via a "conversational AI" companion called Chatty Slimey, powered by Google's Gemini. Spotted by VGC, Square Enix's head of development, Takashi Anzai told Japanese publication Sankei that "new players won't feel lonely wondering where to start playing; it will become their own personal companion." Sankei added that "When a player talks to Slimey using the chat funciton, it automatically generates voices and engages in conversation. The AI also analyzes information from the game screen, […]

Square Enix is putting AI-powered NPC into Dragon Quest X

23 March 2026 at 15:00

Square Enix has often made efforts to experiment with major new technologies. Back when cloud computing was all the rage, Square Enix announced several major projects utilising it. The same thing happened when NFTs and blockchain technologies had a brief stint in the limelight. Now for 2026, Square Enix is focused on AI.

The first major experiment from Square Enix with AI will see Dragon Quest X getting an AI-powered Slime character, powered by Google Gemini. The slime companion will be extra chatty, helping solo players and brand-new players feel ‘less lonely' as they start out their journey in the MMO. The announcement was made at a press event in Japan, attended by VGC.

Dragon Quest X is not available worldwide, so only those in Japan will get to see this experiment in action. The game is an MMO, so it is markedly different to all of the other mainline Dragon Quest titles, which are all traditional turn-based JRPGs.

Once in place, when a player talks to Slimey using the chat function, Gemini will automatically generate voices and engage in conversation. In some instances, Slimey may also initiate a conversation itself when a rare item is found, or a tough enemy is defeated.

Whether or not this experiment leads to any broader or grander integrations remains to be seen. As we've seen in the past, Square Enix's experiments with cloud computing and Blockchain technology didn't really lead to much at the consumer-level, so we shall have to wait and see how it goes.

KitGuru Says: With everyone rushing to harness AI in every way imaginable, we've seen a lot of bad ideas pushed to the forefront. However, when it comes to in-game NPCs and side characters, I do think there is potential there to push the envelope and ultimately create more ‘living' or reactive game worlds.

Octopath Traveler series celebrates new milestone with over 7 million copies sold

16 March 2026 at 12:00

Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler is an interesting series. Originally released as a Nintendo Switch 1 exclusive, this relatively new IP introduced us to a unique visual aesthetic which blended old-school pixel art with modern post-processing techniques to create what they called HD-2D. Since 2018, we’ve gotten 3 total mainline entries – the combined sales of which have now officially surpassed 7 million in total.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Octopath Traveler page confirmed that “the Octopath Traveler series hits 7 million copies shipped and digitally sold worldwide!“ Alongside this, the team shared a commemorative art piece created by illustrator Maika Minami.

As mentioned, the Octopath Traveler series initially started as a Nintendo Switch 1 exclusive back in 2018. That said, the franchise’s release cadence was highly odd, with the first title coming to Windows in 2019; Xbox in 2021 and PlayStation in 2024.

Octopath Traveler Million

The sequel meanwhile first launched in 2023 for Switch, PC and PlayStation; later coming to Xbox in 2024. Finally, the most recent title – Octopath Traveler 0 – released concurrently across all platforms late last year.

Despite being a relatively new IP (and one which was somewhat convoluted to get into initially), Octopath Traveler is slowly but surely finding a dedicated audience of players. It will be interesting to see how the latest title performs in the wake of its multi-platform launch.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Octopath series? Do you like the franchise’s HD-2D art style? Let us know down below.

Blizzard prematurely unveils Overwatch x NieR: Automata crossover, arriving next week

2 March 2026 at 12:00

For the past many years, Overwatch has been embracing all sorts of crossovers, from anime such as My Hero Academia to other video game IPs including Persona 5 and Diablo IV – to name a few. In a crossover which seemed inevitable, Square Enix’s NieR: Automata is set to collab with Overwatch; arriving next week.

Seemingly announcing the crossover prematurely, Blizzard published and then removed a YouTube Short confirming that “Project YoRHa initiates March 10!” – bringing a number of iconic characters from Automata into Overwatch through the release of new skins.

Overwatch NieR

Based on the image shared, it appears as though 5 skins in total will be offered:

  • Lifeweaver as Adam
  • Vendetta as A2
  • Wuyang as 9S
  • Kiriko as 2B
  • Mercy as the Yorha Commander

As of now, little else is known regarding the extent of this crossover. While it will most likely be nothing more than these skins, the game’s recent revamp does present an opportunity for these events to be more substantial.

We will have to wait and see when the Overwatch x NieR Automata crossover goes live on the 10th of March.

NieR: Automata celebrates 10 million copies sold, teasing the next game

23 February 2026 at 12:00

Almost a decade ago now, Square Enix released NieR: Automata – a beautiful, evocative and highly fun game which introduced millions to the unique and bleak world of NieR. Despite the game’s critical and commercial success, we still have yet to receive a proper follow-up entry. Finally however, alongside the announcement that Automata has sold over 10 million copies, Square Enix confirmed that NieR will ”be continued…”

As part of the game’s 9th anniversary stream, publisher Square Enix officially confirmed that NieR: Automata has sold over 10 million copies – a massive achievement for what was a relatively unknown IP upon its release.

While passing such a milestone is nothing to sniff at, by far the biggest announcement at the event was the subtle confirmation that a new game is in the works, with the celebration video concluding with the words “NieR: Automata to be continued…”

While the wording itself is a little odd, it is in reference to one of the more iconic lines from the game. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that they specifically stated NieR: Automata, suggesting that the next game could be a direct sequel.

For the uninitiated, NieR: Automata is a sequel to 2010’s NieR: Replicant / Gestalt, set thousands of years after the first game. Furthermore, the original NieR was itself a spin-off of sorts to the Drakengard series of games. All this is to say that it appears as though the popularity of Automata and its characters are not going to waste, with a direct sequel likely in the works.

Though it's coming almost a decade later than expected, it is exciting to learn that we might finally get a new NieR game at some point.

NieR: Automata Will Continue, Finally Confirms Square Enix as the Game Breaks 10M Units Sold

20 February 2026 at 20:38

NieR: Automata Square Enix

It's been nearly nine years since the launch of NieR: Automata, the highly acclaimed action RPG developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. Fans have long been waiting for news of a sequel. Today, as part of a celebration for the game's latest sales milestone (it has now sold 10 million units across all platforms), they at least got a teaser. It sounds like the gears are finally moving. But why did it take so long? Well, it seems like Game Director Yoko Taro and Square Enix found it hard to reach an agreement. The outspoken creative first said […]

Final Fantasy VII Remake on Switch 2 wouldn’t have been possible without Game-Key Cards, claims Square Enix

20 February 2026 at 09:30

One of the most contentious aspects of the Nintendo Switch 2 is its introduction of Game-Key Cards. Serving somewhat as a bridge between physical and digital media, for many it winds up being the worst of both worlds. That said, some developers have expressed praise towards this latest ‘innovation’, most recently claiming that Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Switch 2 port was only possible due to Game-Key Cards.

Taking part in an interview conducted by the publication Automaton Media, Naoki Hamaguchi – the director of the Final Fantasy VII trilogy – was asked about the team’s decision to go with Game-Key Cards as opposed to a standard cartridge release for the Switch 2 port. According to Hamaguchi:

“There’s simply no way around key cards in certain respects. If you compare loading directly from a game cartridge (containing all game data) to loading from the Nintendo Switch 2’s internal storage, the load speed difference is roughly double.”

Final Fantasy Game-Key

The director continued, “Some have expressed concern that multiplatform development may impose constraints not only on graphics, but even on game design itself. However, this is precisely why we didn’t choose a cartridge.”

The full statement can be found HERE, but Hamaguchi made sure to emphasise the reasons behind this decision, adding that “in the past, when faced with practical issues related to load speed and storage capacity we couldn’t resolve, we had to decide not to release on Nintendo systems. However, Nintendo Switch 2’s performance is impressive, and with a key card format like FFVII Remake, releasing the games became possible. I believe the only thing I can do is continue to sincerely communicate that fact to users.”

While there is no denying that Game-Key Cards do have various faults (partly due to Nintendo’s lack of offering many alternatives), it appears as though in this case Square Enix feels truly justified in their decision. Of course, not all games are made the same, and so it is good to continue to question devs’ decisions on such matters.
