Following months of rumors and speculation, it was finally confirmed back in May that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would indeed get a new expansion in 2027 ahead of The Witcher 4. A few months after the announcement by CD Projekt Red and co-developer Fool's Theory, we will finally see more of what will rival Blood and Wine and Phantom Liberty's scope in late August, as it will be fully revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live hosted by Geoff Keighley. "Our Path to Gamescom 2026 starts with Opening Night Live. On August 25, catch a glimpse of The Witcher 3: […]

The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past expansion to be revealed at Gamescom

21 July 2026 at 15:04

CD Projekt Red briefly confirmed that it was working on a new expansion for The Witcher 3 earlier this year, but things have been quiet since then. That will finally change in a few weeks time, with CD Projekt Red confirming plans to showcase the new expansion during Gamescom.

In an announcement today, CD Projekt Red confirmed that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will be shown for the first time during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the live show hosted by Geoff Keighley, streamed all across the globe. While Opening Night Live will only include a trailer, fans will get to see much more of the expansion later in the week, as CD Projekt Red will be hosting guided demos of the expansion at both the Gamescom business area for press and industry workers, and the entertainment area for fans and regular attendees.

Witcher 3 Franchise

Unfortunately, we do not yet know much about the Songs of the Past expansion. All we know for now is that we will once again be playing as Geralt, setting off on a β€œbrand new adventure”, developed in collaboration with Fool's Theory. It will be interesting to find out when the expansion's story takes place chronologically, as Geralt's story was already wrapped up pretty nicely in the Blood and Wine expansion.

The Witcher 3 first launched all the way back in 2015 and has gone on to sell over 65 million copies worldwide. While the game and its first two expansions are available on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch systems, the new expansion will only be available to owners of the game on current-gen platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. There is currently no word on whether CD Projekt Red plans to upgrade the game for Nintendo's new Switch 2 console.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is going to release sometime in 2027. We should get a more specific release window when the reveal trailer drops.

KitGuru Says: We are finally going to learn what this expansion is all about. Gamescom Opening Night Live will begin on August 25th, so we have just over a month left to go.

A lineup of five game characters from games due in 2027, left to right: a young man in a school uniform, a woman in medieval attire, a blond man with determined eyes, a futuristic soldier in armor with a lion emblem, and a white-haired warrior with swords.

Summer Game Fest 2026 has come and gone, leaving us with two incredibly busy periods in the game release schedule: September-October 2026 and February-March 2027, which publishers big and small have identified in their not-so-disguised attempt to avoid a collision with Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI when it makes its debut on November 19, 2026. To fans of the roleplaying games genre, though, the recent flurry of game announcements has brought the near-certainty that next year will be memorable and perhaps unparalleled even in the future, thanks to the return of several beloved franchises/IPs and studios. Also, unlike recent years, […]

Following the official reveal of the third expansion of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Songs of the Past, Polish developer CD Projekt RED revealed more information during the company's Q1 2026 earnings call. First of all, CDPR boasted that the announcement quickly became the second-most-liked and shared tweet on the saga's official account, only trailing the announcement of The Witcher 4, with 16 million impressions registered within 24 hours of the reveal. With that also comes a lot of responsibility to do it right, which is perhaps part of the reason Songs of the Past got delayed. Investors didn't forget […]

It’s official – The Witcher 3 is getting a new expansion

27 May 2026 at 09:13

Over the past few months, we have been hearing rumours that CD Projekt Red is secretly working on a third expansion for The Witcher 3, more than a decade after the game's initial launch. Today, CDPR confirmed exactly that, however, the new expansion, titled β€˜Songs of the Past', is still quite some ways off from release.

Sitting at over 60 million copies sold, The Witcher 3 is one of the most critically acclaimed and highest-selling RPGs of all time. Now, almost a decade on from the release of the game's original expansions, CD Projekt Red has a third new story arc on the way, helping to bridge the gap while CDPR gets The Witcher 4 ready.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know much about the Songs of the Past expansion. All we know for now is that we will once again be playing as Geralt, setting off on a β€œbrand new adventure”, developed in collaboration with Fool's Theory. More details about the expansion are expected to drop during β€˜late Summer'.

While there is not a final release date yet, CD Projekt Red says the expansion will only be coming to current-gen platforms, including PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and it will release sometime in 2027.
