Geoff Keighley wasn’t lying when he said there was “a lot of great stuff” this year. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 just wrapped, and it threw out one of the densest reveal lists in the show’s history, headlined by a genuinely stunning surprise: a free Witcher 3 remaster.

CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3 Remastered is the story of the night. It’s a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the game, landing September 29, 2026. CDPR also dropped a new expansion, Songs of the Past, due in 2027, and made the two existing expansions free immediately. Geralt clearly isn’t done yet.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation got a fresh trailer confirming a spring 2027 window, with director Naoki Hamaguchi showing off the returning Weapons as reimagined boss fights, a new Typhon summon, and the FITS outfit system for Cloud and Tifa.

Crimson Desert quietly rebranded itself Crimson Desert Enhanced with a 2.0 update adding new story content. I haven’t touched it in weeks, so consider this my nudge back in.

New games worth watching out for

HoYoverse threw a curveball with Nodus Fall, a Monster Hunter meets Elden Ring style project, a big departure from Genshin territory. Paradox debuted Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic American grand strategy game, while Frictional Games (the Amnesia team) unveiled Ontos, starring Stellan Skarsgård and, apparently, a lot of rats.

Also new: Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, Exodus (April 7, 2027), Tarae: The Unbound, The Defiant (a WWII shooter set in China’s war against Japan), and PUBG: DED.NET, a darker 90s-set PvP spin-off.

It turns out that The Witcher 3's appearance at Gamescom Opening Night Live was a double header. Not only did we get our first look at the new Songs of the Past expansion, but CD Projekt Red also announced a free remaster for the original game, coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox consoles. 

In The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, we will indeed be exploring a brand-new region, which is huge, as previous rumours had us thinking that the new questline would be set in Velen, a region we've all already thoroughly explored during the base game and Hearts of Stone expansion.

Not only are we getting the new expansion, but CD Projekt Red has also gone back and remastered the original game, with improved graphics, a completely revamped skill tree, upgraded monster AI, new combat finishers, new Witcher Sign effects, revamped traversal mechanics (including a revamp of Roach to make horse rising smoother), and much more.

Graphically, the game now looks a lot closer to the original E3 2014 demo, which had a higher level of fidelity compared to the launch version of the game – something that proved quite controversial at the time, but not controversial enough to detract from how great the game was overall.

The remaster will be sent out as a free upgrade for all owners of the original game on current-gen platforms, available starting on the 29th of September. Better yet, if you own the base game but never picked up the expansion, then Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine will now be given to you for free. However, you will have to put some money down for the new Songs of the Past expansion.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is coming out in 2027, but we don't have a final release date yet.
