Star Wars Zero Company Thrives on Critic Reviews and Steam, yet Bit Reactor Furloughed 80% of its Team Before Launch

Star Wars Zero Company launched last week to highly positive reviews from critics, and it also appeared among the best-selling games on Steam. However, as reported by Game File's Stephen Totilo, the game's developer, Bit Reactor, is in big trouble, having furloughed a large portion of its workforce just weeks before the game's launch. A Bit Reactor representative called it a difficult decision made before it was clear how the launch would ultimately perform. The rep stressed that the decision was made entirely by Bit Reactor itself, not by publisher Electronic Arts or Disney, which notoriously holds the Star Wars […]

Star Wars Zero Company launches to strong review scores

27 August 2026 at 16:00

Respawn and Bit Reactor have taken on a major challenge with Star Wars: Zero Company, aiming to deliver a tactical strategy game worthy of the franchise’s legacy. The game has officially launched today and critics appear to agree that this is one of the strongest Star Wars titles in years.

Star Wars: Zero Company is debuting to a wave of positive reviews. Over on Metacritic, the game holds an overall score of 86 based on 42 critic reviews. Meanwhile on OpenCritic, the game has an 88 overall score, based on 36 reviews. As the game has only just launched, user scores are not yet available.

The general consensus is that Zero Company delivers excellent XCOM‑style tactical combat paired with a gritty, character‑driven story. Many reviewers note that it’s one of the best Star Wars stories we've had in many years, which is particularly welcome after the disappointment surrounding Disney’s most recent film trilogy.

If the game proves to be a commercial success, it seems likely that Bit Reactor will get to make a sequel. The studio has already spoken out saying that it would like to make one, so we'll have to wait and see how the game performs over the coming months.

KitGuru Says: Zero Company looks to be a major win for Star Wars fans. Tactical combat suits the setting well, and Bit Reactor’s approach seems to have struck the right balance between strategy and storytelling.

Star Wars: Zero Company final trailer released

17 August 2026 at 15:30

The previews have been out for a while and by most accounts, Star Wars: Zero Company is going to be a must-play title for anyone who is a fan of XCOM style strategy. Ahead of the game's launch next week, one final trailer for the game has dropped.

Star Wars: Zero Company is a new strategy game developed by BitReactor. It tells an original story featuring an elite squad of Republic fighters, undertaking secret operations during the Clone Wars in an effort to swing the war in the Republic's favour and end the rising Separatist threat.

Aside from XCOM style battles, players will have RPG elements to explore, forging deep bonds between squad members to unlock more utility in combat scenarios. You can also play with permadeath on, which is the way these games are supposed to be played, so when you lose a squad member on a mission, they are gone for good.

Players will also be able to customise their squad members, swapping between specialisations and you can even change how they look, so you can build a squad that truly feels unique to you.

Star Wars: Zero Company is launching on August 27th for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. At this moment in time, there is no Switch 2 version of the game, but it seems like the sort of game that would fit in well on Nintendo's console, so maybe that will happen somewhere down the line.

KitGuru Says: This is going to be a day-one pickup for me. Are any of you looking forward to Star Wars: Zero Company?

Star Wars Zero Company Does Play a Lot Like XCOM with Lightsabers, But It Has More Than a Few Tricks

11 August 2026 at 14:00

Characters from 'Star Wars Zero Company' in various costumes advancing through a grassy landscape.

Wccftech recently had the chance to attend a Star Wars Zero Company presentation (plus a meaty Q&A with BitReactor, which you can find here), followed by access to a preview build of the upcoming single-player turn-based tactics game. The developers reckon it's shaping up to be more than XCOM with lightsabers, though honestly, after playing it, the similarities are very strong. Still, the game combines squad-based combat with a more character-driven campaign, a strategic galaxy map, and a deep management layer that could make every decision feel consequential. Set during the twilight of the Clone Wars, Zero Company follows Hawks, a […]

Star Wars: Zero Company – Everything You Need to Know about the First X-COM Like Game set in Star Wars

18 June 2026 at 19:30

A promotional image for the game 'Star Wars: Zero Company' featuring various characters from the Star Wars universe, including a Jedi with a lightsaber, alongside logos for Bit Reactor, Lucasfilm Games, and Electronic Arts.

Star Wars: Zero Company is arguably one of the most intriguing games on the 2026 calendar: a turn-based tactical RPG set in the ever-popular Star Wars universe, developed by Bit Reactor in collaboration with Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, as announced in early 2022. The game was first unveiled at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April 2025 and has since steadily built anticipation among both Star Wars fans and fans of tactical strategy games. Bit Reactor's pedigree matters here, too: the studio was founded by former Firaxis veterans who helped shape the XCOM series, and that influence is […]

“Star Wars is About Loss”: Star Wars: Zero Company Studio Reveals How Zero Company is More Than Just ‘Star Wars XCOM’

27 March 2026 at 15:40

A clone trooper firing a blaster rifle in a detailed, industrial environment from the Star Wars: Zero Company video game.

Back in February 2024, EA had a mass layoff that saw 5% of the company cut and the cancellation of an FPS Star Wars game that was in development at Respawn. That meant the only Star Wars games (that we knew of) in development under EA and Respawn were the third Star Wars Jedi game, and a tactics-focused, XCOM-like game from BitReactor, which we eventually learned was called Star Wars: Zero Company. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Zero Company is just 'XCOM but make it Star Wars,' especially because BitReactor was founded by a bunch of […]

Star Wars Zero Company is set during Clone Wars with XCOM-style tactics

27 March 2026 at 10:00

Last year, Respawn surprised us with the announcement of Star Wars Zero Company, a new strategy game set in the Star Wars universe, created by former XCOM developers. Now with the game's release date getting closer, we've received a much deeper look at the game.

In an exclusive feature on PCGamer, we learn that Zero Company is set during the Clone Wars, with our group of fighters going up against the Separatist movement, with a grittier tone inspired by the likes of Star Wars Rogue One and Andor.

Like in XCOM, the enemies on the map will slowly gain buffs over time if you don't take them out quickly enough, making levels more challenging the longer you go. Bit Reactor developers are also taking inspiration from XCOM with a Permadeath mode, so you could potentially see story threads end early if one of your ally falls in battle too soon. This in turn will also boost replayability as players look to perfect their runs and make it through to the end with their entire crew in one piece.

Social systems are in place too, so your characters can bond to unlock additional buffs in combat and unlock additional story moments.

Star Wars Zero Company does not yet have a release date but it will be coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles later this year. We should get more information at this year's Star Wars Celebration event, taking place from May 21st to May 24th.

KitGuru Says: I'm a huge XCOM and Fire Emblem fan, so getting to play a Clone Wars era Star Wars game in a similar style is highly appealing to me. Are you looking forward to Zero Company?
