Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD dropped a major update to their Project Amethyst collaboration (originally unveiled in December 2024) this past week in a video featuring PlayStation Lead Architect Mark Cerny and AMD SVP and GM of the Computing and Graphics Group Jack Huynh. The duo presented three major new features, Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression, which will be coming to future AMD GPUs and consoles like Sony's PlayStation 6. The video was only about nine minutes long, though, and inevitably left viewers with plenty of questions. Thankfully, the folks from Digital Foundry got a few answers from […]

AMD and Sony preview next-gen game console technologies

10 October 2025 at 14:00

It is no secret that AMD works closely with both Sony and Microsoft on future technologies for consoles. AMD and Sony recently revealed some of the big next generation features they are working on, some of which may end up debuting in the PlayStation 6.

AMD and Sony shared a video offering an early look at new technologies in development to advance gaming performance, immersion, and efficiency:

It is a short eight-minute video, so we don't get a full technical deep dive. However, there are three key points to make note of:

  • Neural Arrays: A collection of compute units configured to process data together like a single AI engine.
  • Radiance Cores: New dedicated ray traversal hardware to deliver high performance real-time ray tracing and path tracing.
  • Universal Compression: A new system that evaluates and compresses all available data within the GPU to dramatically reduce memory bandwidth usage.

This technical preview highlights AMD and Sony’s ongoing collaboration to enhance the next generation of gaming hardware and experiences. While these technologies currently only exist as simulations, they are expected to appear in future consoles. Currently, new consoles from both Sony and Microsoft are rumoured to be announced in 2027, and both companies have already confirmed that AMD chips will continue to be used.

KitGuru Says: It is still early days for next-generation console platforms, but work is well under way behind the scenes. Based on this video, it looks like Sony may be a bit further ahead than anticipated.Β

AMD’s OpenAI Partnership Signals Massive Optimism Around Next-Gen Instinct MI450 AI GPUs, Setting Up Fierce Competition for NVIDIA

6 October 2025 at 15:03

Two people conversing on stage with large AMD logo in the background.

AMD has entered into a rather 'blockbuster' deal with OpenAI today, and while the internet is focused on the financial aspect, there's an interesting angle that we'll talk about. AMD's Blockbuster Deal With OpenAI Opens Up a New Revenue Frontier For The Firm, Driven By Next-Gen AI Technologies Team Red has been known as the 'underdogs' of the AI industry, as when you look at compute providers out there, there's little attention paid to alternatives to NVIDIA, especially from Big Tech. AMD has been battling for several years to establish itself as a viable counterpart to NVIDIA's AI offerings, and […]

AMD announces 5-year partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI

6 October 2025 at 14:00

With Intel and Nvidia teaming up recently, many had wondered what AMD's next move might be to remain competitive in the rapidly growing AI space. Today, we got our answer, with AMD announcing a new deal with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.Β

AMD is partnering with OpenAI to provide six gigawats worth of processors to AI datacentres. The five-year agreement will help OpenAI bolster its infrastructure and lessen its reliance on Nvidia chips. On its end, AMD expects the deal to produce billions of dollars in revenue. The market appears to be in agreement, as AMD's stock price surged by as much as 24 percent, according to The Verge.

The rollout of AMD GPUs in OpenAI datacentres will begin with a large chunk of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026. The deal also includes an option for OpenAI to buy up to 160 million shares in AMD at a reduced price, as long as certain milestones are achieved. The end result would be OpenAI holding as much as a 10 percent stake in AMD.

OpenAI will of course still work with Nvidia, having announced a partnership with the company just last month. That partnership will see OpenAI buying up 10 gigawatts worth of Nvidia chips.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: OpenAI has entered a number of strategic partnerships in recent years. It began with the likes of Microsoft and Apple, and now OpenAI is maintaining strong relationships with GPU vendors like AMD and Nvidia to ensure that they can continue to meet the power demands of cutting-edge AI.Β

Intel reportedly in talks to manufacture chips for AMD

3 October 2025 at 16:00

In what could be one of the most significant shifts in the semiconductor industry in decades, a new report claims that Intel is in early-stage negotiations to manufacture chips for its biggest and longest-standing rival, AMD.Β

For years, AMD's resurgence has been built on the back of TSMC's cutting-edge process nodes. The idea of AMD, a fierce competitor in the x86 CPU market, entrusting the production of its chips to Intel would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The report from Semafor (via Tom's Hardware) doesn't specify which chips or the volume involved. Still, it follows earlier reports that AMD was considering Intel's upcoming 18A process, which companies like Nvidia and Broadcom are also said to be evaluating.

This isn't the only high-profile negotiation Intel is reportedly pursuing as it aggressively seeks customers for its foundry services. Not long ago, it was reported that Intel had also reached out to Apple to explore closer collaboration.

KitGuru says: Have you ever thought AMD would use Intel's foundry services for its own chips?
