The Timeline for Indie Success is Paved by Playtesting, or what Jason Della Rocca calls the β€œNew Indie Religion”

1 July 2026 at 12:30

A person speaks on stage at the XP Game Summit 2026 in Toronto, with a screen displaying the event logo.

The floor-level standard for surviving in the video game industry across indie and triple-A players has always been β€˜difficult,’ but in the last few years, it’s been kicked up a notch. GDC’s State of the Game Industry 2026 reported that 1-in-4 of its surveyed video game industry professionals have been laid off in the last two years, and it’s difficult for all studios, regardless of scale, to stay afloat. But that hasn’t stopped the global video game industry from reaching over $200B in revenue last year. A year which also saw titles from independent developers dominate the cultural conversation. One […]

Windrose Reportedly Outsold Crimson Desert in April With an Estimated 1.7M Copies in Just Two Weeks

8 May 2026 at 18:22

Two pirate characters, a woman holding a musket and a man with a pistol, stand together under the title 'Windrose' with ships visible in the background.

April had a few major game releases across PC and consoles with games like Pragmata, Saros, and Invincible Vs. all arriving within its 30 days, but a new report from Alinea Analytics points to only one of those games reaching near the top of the sales charts. While Pragmata reportedly made the top-five games sold across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, it was the recently released pirate adventure Windrose that landed at the top spot, with March's Crimson Desert slightly behind in second place. According to the report, despite only being available on Steam, Windrose was the best-selling game of the […]

Windrose PC Performance Analysis & Tuning Guide – How To Get Best Experience On PC

30 April 2026 at 18:15

Artwork of two pirate characters from the game 'Windrose' with text overlay 'PC Performance Analysis & Tuning Guide: How to get best experience on PC,' featuring icons for 'FPS Boost,' 'Graphics Settings,' 'Best Config,' and 'Optimization Tips.'

With PC games growing increasingly complex nowadays β€” especially ones built on Epic Games's infamous Unreal Engine 5 β€” default/maxed-out graphics settings rarely (if at all) strike the optimal balance between visual fidelity and performance that most PC gamers seek, and early access sensation Windrose is no exception to this rule. As a demanding UE5 game, it should come as no surprise to many that the game's maxed-out Epic graphics settings will be very GPU-heavy and thus should require some tweaking to achieve better performance on most rigs, without completely sacrificing visual fidelity. This guide should hopefully help you strike […]

Windrose new biome update will take β€˜at least six months’

29 April 2026 at 14:30

Windrose quickly became this year's breakout Steam Early Access hit over the past few months. Now, the developers are looking ahead to the next major update, which may not arrive until later in the year.

For the next patch, the Windrose development team is focused on fixing a few key issues, including:

  • Connectivity issues;
  • CPU usage on idle clients and servers;
  • Disk usage during gameplay (to reduce the load on SSD specifically);
  • Performance and stability improvements;
  • Over 40 new building pieces to fill some gaps and inconsistencies;
  • Over 50 fixes and QoL changes;

While bug fixes and smaller changes will continue to happen, the next major content update for Windrose is still some ways off. The development team says it will take β€œat least six months to deliver” on its plans.

In the meantime though, fans have a teaser of what to expect, with the next content update focusing on adding a new biome called Ashlands. Alongside its big content updates, the developers will also continue to work on gameplay systems, so there will be plenty to look forward to before the new biome hits.

Windrose hits 1 million sales in just one week

20 April 2026 at 14:00

There seems to be a new hit survival game popping up on Steam each year. 2026 is no different, with Windrose being an early contender for breakout early access hit of the year.Β

In an update shared on its Steam community page, the Windrose developers shared that the game has sold over 1 million copies during its first week. The game has also achieved an impressive concurrent player count of 200,000 players at its peak.

This is obviously a great start for a multiplayer game, especially an early access title. Now, we will have to wait and see if the studio can maintain this momentum with future updates.

For those who don't know, Windrose is a pirate-themed survival game, where players team up to explore, find treasure, build bases, engage in naval warfare and more. The game currently has a very positive user score, based on tens of thousands of individual reviews on Steam.
