VESA introduces new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification standard

9 July 2026 at 16:00

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced DisplayHDR True Black 1400, a new performance tier in its display specification certifying the latest generation of OLED displays. This new spec targets both professional HDR content creation and premium consumer displays.

To achieve certification under the new tier, displays must reach a peak luminance of at least 1400cd/mΒ² while maintaining black levels down to 0.0005cd/mΒ². The specification also increases the required full-screen luminance to a minimum of 700cd/mΒ². VESA states that these thresholds are made possible by recent technological innovations such as tandem OLED architectures, which boost sustained brightness without compromising the deep blacks characteristic of emissive panels.

The new standard builds directly on the testing framework established in the DisplayHDR CTS 1.2 specification. This framework requires more rigorous validation for colour accuracy, contrast, and black-level performance. Lenovo will showcase the very first certified displays at Bilibili World 2026 in Shanghai from July 10-12th. Samsung also plans to demonstrate qualified OLED and QD-OLED panels featuring this tier at various trade shows during the second half of the year.

KitGuru says: The introduction of the DisplayHDR True Black 1400 tier establishes a clearer performance standard for the latest high-brightness tandem OLED panels entering the market. Still, don't expect every new OLED to meet the criteria for this new certification, at least for the foreseeable future.

Skyrim Finally Gets True HDR After 2 Years of Modding Work, Fixing Bethesda’s Brutal Highlight Clipping

19 May 2026 at 18:00

A digital image overlay of a scenic landscape with stone stairs and wood structures displays a logo above the text 'HDR' and 'Skyrim COMMUNITY SHADERS'.

A few days ago, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim received a substantial visual upgrade with the addition of true HDR support brought by the Community Shaders PC mod, which previously introduced true PBR and frame generation support to Bethesda's best-selling game. This means anyone who owns an HDR-compatible display will be able to benefit from greatly improved brightness peaks, helping breathe new life into the 2011 game's visuals alongside the other Community Shaders features. The CS team worked with this alongside the folks at HDR Den, including HDR evangelist Filippo Tarpini (whom I previously interviewed at length on the state […]

Alan Wake Remastered gets surprise update with tons of new additions and improvements

27 February 2026 at 11:00

In recent years we’ve seen Remedy Entertainment going back to some of its previous releases in order to improve them technologically. Most notably, the team patched 2019’s Control last year adding proper HDR support; new ultra ray tracing presets; 10bit colour and much more. Now, Alan Wake Remastered is seeing a similar treatment – bringing tons of welcome additions.

Releasing the patch notes via their blog, the team at Remedy Entertainment detailed Alan Wake Remastered’s surprise update. Available now on PC, patch 1.33 brings both expected and welcome improvements, including but not limited to:

  • Camera improvements
  • Vegetation animation improvements
  • Weapon swap refinements
  • Full HDR support
  • New β€˜Modern’ camera mode
  • Maximum FPS increased to 240 (was 200 previously)
  • DLSS improvements
  • 10bit colour support
  • More accurate FOV scaling
  • More dynamic ultrawide support
  • Other miscellaneous refinements

Of course, the most immediately notable enhancement will be the addition of 10bit colour and full HDR support, making the game’s distinct colour palette more pleasing in both light and dark areas. Of course, for those with an ultrawide monitor, this update is also pretty vital.

As was the case with Control, hopefully many of these improvements will make their way over to the console version of Alan Wake Remastered sooner rather than later. Regardless, it is always exciting to see a game receive pretty transformative updates so many years later. The full patch notes can be found HERE.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this surprise update? Will you be replaying Alan Wake Remastered? Which of the above additions do you think is the biggest deal? Let us know down below.
