DLSS 5 Modders Get Hybrid FP8/NVFP4 Running on RTX 50 GPUs, But Performance Improves by Just 1–2%

10 September 2026 at 14:31

Two NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards are displayed with the text 'NVIDIA DLSS 5' and 'Modded NVFP4 vs FP8 Blackwell Hybrid Test' on a green textured background.

NVIDIA DLSS 5 modders continue experimenting with ways to reduce the technology's substantial performance cost, with the latest attempt bringing a hybrid FP8/NVFP4 version of its Neural Rendering model to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. As highlighted by X user SwurvGaming, the experimental implementation was introduced through version 0.7.1 of the OptiScaler-DLSSNR-PreSR-Multipass project. Since Blackwell's fifth-generation Tensor Cores natively accelerate NVFP4, moving portions of DLSS 5 away from FP8 sounds like an obvious way to improve inference performance. The actual gains, however, are tiny. In fact, according to the project's release notes, the hybrid model reduced the complete DLSS 5 […]

Owlcat Co-Founder Calls Studio “A Little Bit Masochistic,” Embracing Baldur’s Gate 4 Talk After Larian Walked Away to Divinity

31 July 2026 at 16:30

On the left, a fantasy-themed artwork features several diverse characters from Baldur's Gate 4, including a warrior and a mage against a swirling sky backdrop; on the right, the OWL CAT GAMES logo overlays a scene from another fantasy setting with warriors and adventurers.

When Larian Studios announced that it wouldn't make Baldur's Gate 4, opting to return to its own Divinity franchise instead, fans of the 20-plus-million-selling Baldur's Gate 3 immediately started to wonder who would take up the baton. Baldur's Gate 3 was like lightning in a bottle in a way, so it would be a gargantuan task for any developer. That's why RPG veteran James Ohlen, who actually worked on the first two franchise installments, turned down Wizards of the Coast when offered the chance to helm the sequel. However, Cyprus-based developer Owlcat Games doesn't seem too daunted by the prospect. […]

A dark, fantasy landscape with dragons flying and a silhouetted figure facing a large, ominous building, featuring the title text 'No Rest for the Wicked 1.0'.

Earlier this month, Ori developer Moon Studios announced the 1.0 launch date of No Rest for the Wicked, its isometric Soulslike fantasy action RPG. The Austrian studio's new project will exit early access in October on PC and PlayStation 5, while Nintendo and Xbox fans will have to wait longer, primarily due to ongoing optimization on the weaker Series S and Switch 2 consoles. ‘Plucked Off a Gas Station Shelf’: Baldur’s Gate 3 Publishing Lead Actually Likes Crimson Desert Despite Its ‘Cynical Amalgamation’ of Mechanics

31 March 2026 at 15:15

Two characters from the games Crimson Desert and 'Baldur's Gate 3' are shown, with the left character wearing fur armor and face paint, and the right character holding a dagger and wearing decorative clothing.

Anyone who has played, or even just seen, Crimson Desert in action won't fail to notice how it borrows mechanics from other popular games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, just to name a few. Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead Michael Douse didn't miss this either, saying the game is the definition of "gaming plucked off a gas station shelf." Still, this doesn't make the game any less fun. "Crimson Desert is fun to play, but it is such a cynical amalgamation of borrowed mechanics. It is Now That's What I […]
