Onimusha: Way of the Sword sells 1 million copies on day one

Capcom just proved that reviving a dormant franchise after two decades still works. Onimusha: Way of the Sword crossed one million sales on its very first day out, and that’s pushed the whole series past 10 million copies sold since it began.

Not bad for a franchise that hasn’t had a proper new entry in over 20 years.

Capcom credited the strong launch to a heavy marketing push beforehand, including multiple demos and hands-on events aimed at getting the game in front of as many players as possible. It clearly worked. And it’s a big signal for what’s coming next, because Capcom has made no secret that this is part of a wider plan to dust off older IP and turn it into new releases.

Capcom’s bigger plan

This win doesn’t exist in isolation. Capcom’s had a genuinely stacked year, with Resident Evil Requiem in February, Pragmata in April, and the Dragon’s Dogma 2 expansion Dark Arisen also landing. Mega Man: Dual Override is next up on the 2027 slate, marking the series’ first new game since Mega Man 11 back in 2018.

If Onimusha’s launch numbers keep growing, which they will, expect Capcom to keep raiding the archives- and why wouldn’t they? It’s working.

Assassin’s Creed hits new milestone with over 250 million copies sold

13 July 2026 at 11:00

While sentiment surrounding the franchise can vary from release-to-release, the Assassin’s Creed series remains one of Ubisoft’s biggest and most successful. In the wake of the long-awaited launch of AC Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft have now confirmed that Assassin’s Creed as a franchise has sold over 250 million copies.

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Ubisoft shared initial sales figures for the recently-released Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced remake – confirming that over 2 million units were sold in the first 24 hours.

This is but the cherry on top however, with the publisher now revealing that “since it first launched in 2007, the Assassin's Creed series has sold more than 250 million games worldwide.”

According to the company, this puts AC as “one of the best-selling series in video game history”. While sales data in the video games space remains rather elusive, based on what is known, Assassin’s Creed is currently the 8th best-selling franchise of all time – surpassing the likes of Final Fantasy (212 million), Resident Evil (201 million) and NBA 2K (173 million).

250 MILLION UBISOFT

Breaking down the growth of the Assassin’s Creed franchise over the years, we can see that 20 million copies of various AC titles were sold in the past 10 months – with the full timeline being as follows:

  • 2010: 20M
  • 2014: 73M
  • 2016: 100M
  • 2019: 140M
  • 2020: 155M
  • 2022: 200M
  • 2025: 230M
  • 2026: 250M

Love it or hate it, the Assassin’s Creed franchise continues to be a core pillar for Ubisoft. It will be interesting to see just how many copies Black Flag Resynced manages to push as time goes on.

Mewgenics, the “cat breeding magnum opus” from Edmund McMillen, creator of Binding of Isaac, and Tyler Glaiel, creator of The End is Nigh, has achieved a massive commercial milestone. It has sold over 1 million copies in just 7 days since its launch on PC, Mewgenics has become the first indie success of the year.

The news was brought to us by one of the creators via X.com. Player engagement for the tactical roguelike has also been quite good, according to SteamDB, reaching an all-time high of 115,428 concurrent players on February 15th. This figure surpasses the peak of 112,947 concurrent players set by the previous genre leader, Hades 2, officially making Mewgenics the most-played roguelite in Steam's history. Currently, the game sits at a 92% Steam review score with over 20K reviews.

Tyler Glaiel also posted other fun stats about Mewgenics, stating that the game had around 400k wishlists before reviews came out. However, that number increased considerably after reviews began to be published, reaching 600K.

As of now, the game is available on Steam with a 10% launch discount, bringing the price down to £22.49/$26.99/€26.09 from its standard £24.99/$29.99/€28.99. This promotional offer ends on February 24th, after which the game will return to its full retail price.
