Battlefield 6 EA App Outage Leads Franchise Head Vince Zampella to Recommend Using Steam Instead

11 October 2025 at 13:00

Battlefield 6 announcement apologizing for outage, promising 12x 2XP rewards, and full Battle Pass with soldiers in action background.

Yesterday, when the Battlefield 6 servers went live, some users who purchased the game on PC via the EA app experienced a nasty entitlement issue that essentially locked them out of playing any of the game's modes. Most users received a message saying they were missing DLC content, and the bug quickly became a meme. A few hours later, everything was fixed, and the impacted players even received some bonuses for their troubles: Today, we experienced an outage on the EA app that prevented some of our players who pre-ordered Battlefield 6 from accessing the game, and we know this […]

Team Fortress 2 Classic is coming to Steam with an open beta this month

2 October 2025 at 15:00

For anyone who misses the simpler days of Team Fortress 2, before the endless stream of hats and the current bot infestation, some great news has just arrived. The development team behind the popular Team Fortress 2 Classic mod has announced that an open beta for its official Steam release will kick off on October 13th.

The two-week open beta, which coincides with the start of the next Steam Next Fest, will give players access to nearly all of the mod's exclusive content, including unique weapons, maps, and game modes. A major highlight will be the revamped support for the Four-Team mode, which adds green and yellow teams to the standard red vs. blue conflict.

While TF2 Classic has been available for years as a manual download, its move to the Steam platform is a huge step forward. It will make the mod far more accessible to a wider audience, removing the hassle of a complicated installation. The developers are eager to receive feedback from this new wave of players, stating that the beta presents a “great chance to cut through any sampling biases and see what newcomers think”.

The Team Fortress 2 Classic open beta will run from October 13th to October 27th. All you'll need to play is a copy of the free-to-play Team Fortress 2 installed on your system.

Surprise update hints at upcoming Prototype 1 remaster

2 October 2025 at 08:00

One of the more underrated franchises from the 7th-generation of consoles was Prototype – a series of open-world titles in which the player can obtain a suite of overpowered abilities including shapeshifting; wall running; air gliding and much more. Unfortunately, the Activision-published series saw just two entries, with the most recent arriving over a decade ago. While a Prototype 3 is nowhere in sight, it appears as though a remaster might be in the works.

As part of an odd update made to the original Prototype on Steam, fans noticed that the 2009 title’s developer credits had been updated, listing additional Activision support team as well as Iron Galaxy – a studio primarily focused on remastering/remaking older games.

Perhaps most curiously, the update also seems to have added in some internal test maps alongside other minor changes.

Prototype Remaster

Of course, we will have to wait for an official announcement, but it appears as though this cult-classic series could be getting a revival; especially in the wake of rumours from earlier this year. Hopefully an announcement is coming sooner rather than later.

It will be interesting to see just how much of a ‘remaster’ this winds up being – and whether it does justice to the original.

Decade-old PAYDAY 2 introduces DLC rental service

30 September 2025 at 09:00

More than decade on from its last entry, PAYDAY 3 launched back in 2023 to plenty of criticisms, with many fans of the franchise choosing to go back to the older but more content-rich PAYDAY 2. It seems the team have taken note of this, as Starbreeze have now added a highly-unnecessary subscription service to the 12 year-old title.

Available to subscribe to right now for £3.99 a month (or £15.99 for 6 months), PAYDAY 2’s new service will net you “full access to all available PAYDAY 2 DLCs.”

While PAYDAY 2 has released a ton of paid content over its years, the notion of essentially renting out DLC for a decade-old game is certainly an odd move by Starbreeze – especially as the game and its DLC have been discounted heavily countless times in the past.

PAYDAY 2 subscription

Players seem to have already started expressing their frustrations with this latest decision, as the game’s ‘Recent’ Steam ratings have now fallen to ‘Mixed’.

Considering the fact that PAYDAY 3 has continued to struggle trying to dig its way out of a hole, adding an unnecessary subscription service to the PREVIOUS entry makes little-to-no sense.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest move? Would you ever consider renting DLC? Let us know down below.

Classic PC MMO Habbo Hotel is coming to Steam

29 September 2025 at 11:00

Habbo Hotel was a classic browser-based MMO which released back in the early 2000s. As with all MMOs, the game has changed and evolved over time. For those who miss the nostalgia of the OG Habbo Hotel, publisher Sulake Oy has announced that Habbo Hotel: Origins is “coming soon” to Steam.

Available to wishlist now on Steam, Habbo Hotel: Origins allows you to “Step back into a vibrant pixel universe where familiar faces and fresh surprises await.”

Based on the earlier 2005 iteration of Habbo Hotel, Origins should offer plenty of familiarity for those who enjoyed the MMO back in the day.

Steam Habbo Hotel: Origins

That said, as with the likes of Old School Runescape and World of Warcraft Classic, Habbo Hotel is planned to receive consistent updates which evolve “every season.”

It is worth noting that Habbo Hotel: Origins has been operating since 2024, however players would need to download the game directly through Habbo’s site.

As such, having a classic such as this on Steam is welcome to see. Hopefully the game continues to stay true to the original Habbo Hotel.

The Amount of Video Games Released On Steam Has Reportedly Increased By 93% From 2020 to 2024

26 September 2025 at 18:37

In a new report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, which centers around one of the modern video game industry's issues: there are simply too many games. Schreier pointed out a staggering statistic to consider about how the industry has changed in the last few years, showing that according to SteamDB, the amount of games released on Steam in 2020 totalled around 9,656. In 2024, that number went up 93%, to 18,626. In today's attention economy, where video game developers aren't just competing with other developers to get players buying and playing their games but with streaming services, social media apps, and […]

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has been relisted on Steam (though not yet purchasable)

25 September 2025 at 10:00

In the wake of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, the console maker has spoken on bringing back many of the publisher’s more legacy games and franchises. Following reports that Microsoft was working on bringing some of Activision’s Transformers titles back from the dead, the much-loved Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has been relisted on Steam (though not yet purchasable).

Back during the Microsoft-Activision talks, a Hasbro spokesperson expressed their desires for the potential owners to revive many of Activision’s legacy Transformers games.

In the years since the deal went through, there have been plenty of rumours surrounding various old Activision IPs being brought back, including a report claiming that Transformers War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron re-releases were being worked on.

Transformers Cybertron

Though yet to be officially announced, the long-removed Steam page for Fall of Cybertron has since been relisted, with all of the assets and descriptions being added just recently – indicating that this is more than just a fluke.

Assuming the re-emergence of Fall of Cybertron is real, we could see an official announcement from Microsoft during their Tokyo Game Show presentation. We won’t have to wait long to find out.

Baldur’s Gate 3 gets surprise Steam Deck optimisation update

24 September 2025 at 08:00

In the years since its initial release, Larian Studios has continued to update and improve the excellent Baldur’s Gate 3 with new story content; endgame additions; extra subclasses alongside a slew of bug fixes and optimisation improvements. As part of the game’s latest patch, Baldur’s Gate 3 should now run much more smoothly on Valve’s Steam Deck handheld.

While it is already Steam Deck verified, the latest hotfix update to Baldur’s Gate 3 brings with it a bunch of optimisations focused on Valve’s handheld, with the team at Larian taking to their blog to say:

“Hotfix #34 brings a special update to those of you playing on Steam Deck: Baldur’s Gate 3 now features a native Steam Deck build! This means the game can now be run natively on the platform, resulting in a more stable framerate, lower loading times, and smoother gameplay.”

Gate 3 Update

In essence, Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam Deck no longer requires Proton’s compatibility layer ultimately reducing “CPU usage and memory consumption overall” while also including a default visual preset for those using the handheld (though you can of course tweak this to your liking).

According to Larian, the optimisations made for Steam Deck will also benefit other players, with the update introducing improved model streaming across all systems; “which should reduce framerate spikes in busy areas, such as the Lower City in Act 3.”

Full details on the native Steam Deck version, save data compatibility and more can be found HERE. All that said, it is exciting to see the Steam Deck continue to receive bespoke care and development time from 3rd-party studios.

Borderlands 4 surpasses 2.5 million copies sold

22 September 2025 at 17:00

Borderlands 4 has been out for over a week now and despite some performance issues, the game achieved high critic review scores and has gone on to become a top seller. Since launching ten days ago, the game has now surpassed 2.5 million copies sold.

GI.biz, a news outlet focused on the business side of the games industry, has reported that Borderlands 4 has shifted 2.5 million copies since launch. While PC players faced the most performance problems based on user reviews, the game sold 1.3 million copies via Steam alone.

Borderlands 4 Pitchford

While Randy Pitchford was quick to blast PC gamers online for complaining about performance, the development team was quick to smooth things over. The developers have acknowledged some of the common performance problems and a patch was already pushed out over the weekend to address game crashes.

Borderlands 4 will continue to get updates over the next few years, with a mix of free updates, patches and paid DLC.

Steam will stop supporting Windows 32-bit systems in 2026

21 September 2025 at 09:00

Valve has officially announced that it will end support for 32-bit versions of the Windows operating system in its Steam client. The change, scheduled to take effect on January 1st, 2026, marks the final step in the platform's transition to exclusively supporting 64-bit systems.

The decision is a practical one, driven by the small number of users still running these older operating systems. According to Valve, the latest Steam Hardware Survey data from August 2025 shows the user base for 32-bit Windows 10 has dwindled to just 0.01% of all active PCs on the platform. In contrast, 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and 11 now account for over 95% of Steam's user base.

Chinese Steam

After the January 1st deadline, the Steam client will no longer receive any updates on 32-bit systems, including critical security updates. Valve has also stated that Steam Support will cease offering technical assistance for any issues encountered on these unsupported platforms. While the client may continue to function for a short time, its core features rely on system libraries that are no longer being updated on the 32-bit architecture, meaning functionality will degrade and eventually break.

It is essential to note that this update only affects the Steam client running on a 32-bit OS; users with 64-bit versions of Windows will still be able to run their legacy 32-bit games without any issues. Valve's advice to the affected players is to upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows to continue receiving all client updates and ensure all features remain functional and secure.

Xbox PC App now officially supports other launchers

17 September 2025 at 16:00

Microsoft has begun rolling out a major update for its Xbox app on PC and handheld devices, aiming to address the issue of “too many launchers” on a device. The new version introduces an aggregated gaming library, which automatically detects and displays your installed games from multiple storefronts in one convenient place.

According to the announcement, when you install a game from a compatible PC retailer, such as Battle.net, it will now automatically appear in your “My Library” section and your “Most Recent” list within the Xbox app. This allows you to launch all your games from a single interface, regardless of where you bought them. For those who prefer a cleaner look, you can also head into the settings and toggle which storefronts you want the app to display in your library.

Later this month, Microsoft will introduce another significant quality-of-life feature: cross-device play history. A new “Jump back in” list will sync across your console, PC, and handheld devices, letting you quickly resume your last played game, no matter where you left off. The library will also be getting a new “cloud playable” filter to make it easier to see which of your owned games can be streamed on the go.

This is a significant step in Microsoft's goal of making the Xbox app the central hub for PC gaming. Combined with the recently tested “My apps” feature for launching third-party programs, it appears that Microsoft wants its app to be the primary interface you use, especially on controller-driven handheld devices, where navigating multiple apps can be cumbersome.

Palworld will leave Early Access in 2026

16 September 2025 at 14:53

Palworld has been in early access for over a year and a half but we are nearing the end of this journey. In a recent video, Pocketpair detailed its plans for Palworld 1.0, confirming that the game will leave Early Access next year.

Since launch, Palworld has received five major updates, each adding new improvements and content for players to experience. The development team has “a lot of ideas” for where to take Palworld from here, but the goal first and foremost is to clean up a lot of lingering issues ahead of the 1.0 launch. This includes many of the game's self-described “quirks and jank”. Once all of those problems are ironed out, Palworld will be ready to leave early access. The current goal is to get all of this work done over the next year and release before the end of 2026.

As the development team focuses more on fixing up lingering issues, there are less resources to dedicate to new content development. As a result, the upcoming ‘Winter' update will not be as big as the previous update, titled Feybreak.

Pocketpair has so far not allowed the Nintendo patent dispute to hinder its development plans, although it did force the studio to make a few changes. The growing hope across the industry is that Pocketpair wins the lawsuit, as Nintendo has filed some rather suspect patents that would hinder many games across different genres if the patents are allowed to be enforced.

After 11 years, Borderless Gaming has finally reached V1.0

8 September 2025 at 14:00

Borderless Gaming has been helping gamers manage unruly game windows for some time. After more than a decade, the developer has finally released version 1.0, bringing a massive overhaul with it. Relaunching on Steam as a premium, paid application, the new version has been completely redesigned from the ground up, featuring compelling new features such as its own vendor-neutral frame generation and upscaling tech.

Version 1.0 of Borderless Gaming (via VideoCardz) features both frame generation and upscaling solutions that are compatible with a wide range of hardware. This puts Borderless Gaming in direct competition with the popular Lossless Scaling tool, offering users a way to enable frame generation in games that don't support it natively. This is particularly great news for owners of older, pre-RTX 40-series Nvidia GPUs who don't have access to DLSS 3, or for games that lack FSR 3 support.

Beyond the performance-boosting tech, the update also adds new “App Container” features. This allows users to apply custom shaders, such as CRT filters, and custom backgrounds to their game windows, making it a powerful tool for retro and indie game fans who want to customise their visual experience. Steam Workshop support has also been integrated for sharing game profiles.

This massive feature update does come with a change in the business model. The new version of Borderless Gaming is available on Steam for a one-time purchase of £5.89/$6.99/€6.89. However, for those who need the original, no-frills window management, the developer has confirmed that the legacy version (v9.6.0) will remain available for free on the project's official GitHub page.

Valve nears new hardware launch as Steam Frame trademark uncovered

5 September 2025 at 12:30

It looks like Valve may be preparing to re-enter the living room hardware space, as new trademark filings suggest the company is working on a new console. A recently discovered submission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows Valve has trademarked the name “Steam Frame”, and the description points directly to a spiritual successor to the original Steam Machine concept.

The evidence comes from two separate (1, 2) but related filings (via Reddit). The first one covers categories such as “computer hardware” and “streaming devices”, while the second is more specific, explicitly covering “computer game consoles” and “video game consoles”. Taken together, this strongly suggests the Steam Frame is not a peripheral but a standalone piece of hardware designed for gaming.

Assuming it will follow the same logic as the Steam Machines, the Steam Frame will be a dedicated, pre-built PC that boots directly into SteamOS. It would offer the same seamless, controller-first experience that has made the Steam Deck so successful, but optimised for your TV. It would be the realisation of the original Steam Machine dream, but this time backed by a much more refined version of SteamOS.

By leaving the portable form factor and its thermal constraints behind, a dedicated console could also house a significantly more powerful APU. This could enable Valve to target higher framerates and resolutions, which the Steam Deck is not designed for.

KitGuru says: A trademark filing is not a product announcement, and we should keep our expectations in check until we hear something official. However, this is the most concrete evidence yet that Valve is making a second attempt at establishing itself in the home console market.

Hollow Knight: Silksong launches to over half a million concurrent players on Steam alone

5 September 2025 at 08:00

Following half a decade of hype, excitement and anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally officially released. Given just how long fans have been waiting, it was clear that the indie title was going to have a massive launch. Even so, Silksong seems to be exceeding all expectations – having peaked at over half a million concurrent players on Steam alone within hours of its arrival.

With a peak concurrent player count of 535,213 users on Steam, Hollow Knight: Silksong is already one of the biggest games on the platform’s history CCU-wise, currently sitting as the 18th most played game ever on Steam – resting between the Battlefield 6 open beta (521,079) and Path of Exile 2 (578,569 players).

Hollow Knight Steam

Perhaps even more impressive however is the fact that upon its official launch at 2PM UK time yesterday, Silksong managed to break Steam; the Nintendo eShop; PSN and the Xbox Store – likely due in part to the game lacking any pre-orders (meaning fans were hammering each respective store as soon as the game went live).

It was recently announced that the original Hollow Knight had sold over 15 million copies since its arrival back in 2017. Given just how big Silksong’s launch appears to be, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the sequel hit 10 million copies within its first month.

Regardless, after 7 or so years of waiting, Silksong is actually finally officially here.
