Borderlands 4 has been coasting along at a few thousand concurrent players for weeks. Then Gearbox dropped a new Vault Hunter, slapped a very revealing skin on her, and suddenly everyone’s rediscovered the game.

Loveless gives Borderlands 4 its best day in ages

On Steam, the free weekend is doing plenty of the work here, sure. But the real spike lines up with Loveless the Hacker, a cybernetically-enhanced fighter with a split psyche who’s already been branded gooner bait by the internet, and they might not be wrong. The Ornate Order Pack skin, which comes free if you own the Super Deluxe Edition or Vault Hunter Pack, is the kind of outfit that leaves nothing to the imagination and everything to the imagination at once.

The numbers speak for themselves. Borderlands 4 launched last September to a peak of 304,000 players before settling into the low thousands within weeks. A few weeks back it was hovering around 2,400 concurrent players. Today it’s cleared 20,000, the single biggest one-day jump the game has seen since launch.

Say what you want about the marketing strategy, but it’s working. Nothing brings players back to a looter-shooter quite like a $9.99 skin doing all the heavy lifting a mixed reception couldn’t.

Gearbox is beginning to tease the next major Borderlands 4 expansion. Story Pack 2 is set to arrive in September and early details confirm that the update will include a new playable Vault Hunter, making it one of the more substantial additions planned for the game.

Gearbox has outlined the contents of Version 1.9, which includes Bounty Pack 4. This update adds Murders and Acquisitions, a repeatable mission set in the Toxic Scowl where players assist Levaine of the Electi in resolving a feud between Ripper factions. The expansion features a new boss, three mini‑bosses and exclusive loot, including a Pearlescent weapon and new Legendary gear. Vault Card 4 is also available, offering cosmetic rewards and rerollable items.

The bigger news is the early reveal of Story Pack 2, which launches on the 10th of September. This campaign brings back FL4K, the beastmaster from Borderlands 3, in a new narrative adventure titled FL4K and the Last Resort. Alongside FL4K’s return, Gearbox is preparing to introduce Loveless the Hacker as a new playable Vault Hunter. Loveless is an ex‑Anshin operative who uses cybernetics and a self‑created digital virus that can manifest physically during combat.

In September we will also get Bounty Pack 5, which includes new mission content and Vault Card 5. Players who own the Super Deluxe Edition will receive all upcoming Bounty Packs and Story Packs automatically, while Deluxe Edition owners receive the full Bounty Pack Bundle.

Borderlands 4 players won’t have to wait long for the next chunk of premium content. During the latest Gearbox DevCast, the studio revealed Bounty Pack 4: Murders and Acquisitions, which is set to launch on July 30th alongside the V1.9 update. The DLC introduces fresh loot, and a new Vault Card for players to work through.

Bounty Pack 4 is split into two parts – the core narrative expansion, Murders and Acquisitions, and Vault Card 4. The story content sends players into the Toxic Scowl, a polluted desert canyon where they’ll assist Levaine, leader of the Electi, in mediating a conflict between two Ripper factions. The mission is repeatable and features choice‑driven encounters that alter dialogue, combat scenarios, and even the assistance available during the final boss fight.

Completing the mission rewards players with a new Vault Hunter Skin, a Vehicle, and an ECHO‑4 Drone Skin. Those who take on the final boss and three mini‑bosses will also have a chance to earn new exclusive loot, including one Pearlescent weapon and six new Legendary items. Vault Card 4 arrives alongside 24 new cosmetic rewards and four rerollable gear pieces earned through exploration, enemy kills, and daily or weekly challenges.

Gearbox also shared a brief look at Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort, arriving in September. The expansion brings FL4K back as they search for their missing skag, Mr. Chew, while uncovering a Tediore operation on a volcanic jungle island. The same update will introduce a new playable Vault Hunter, Loveless the Hacker, and will also include Bounty Pack 5, with more details to come closer to launch.

Borderlands 4 is getting its V1.8 update this week, bringing along with it new endgame content, as well as the next Bounty Pack DLC, a new raid and more. This update also brings cross-platform saves to the game, and a surprise return of a fan-favourite game mode.

The headline addition is Bounty Pack 3: A Zane to Kill For, a story DLC that sends players into a neon‑soaked arcade simulation to investigate the murder of Zane’s Digi‑Clone backup. The mission is designed to be repeatable and includes a new boss, two mini‑boss encounters and fresh high‑tier loot. Alongside the expansion, players gain access to Vault Card 3, which offers new arcade‑themed cosmetics and rerollable gear.

Version 1.8 also introduces Cross‑Platform Saves, allowing players to freely move their Vault Hunter progress between any platform where they own Borderlands 4.

On the free‑content side, Gearbox has added a major new endgame challenge, Takedown at Hadron Abyss. This raid takes place in a submerged research facility filled with mutated aquatic enemies, culminating in a fight against the Child of Terramorphous. The raid scales to party size and supports Mayhem modifiers and Hardcore mode. New Legendary and Pearlescent items are available as dedicated drops, including a new shotgun, sniper rifles, grenades, shields and class mods.

Another major addition is the return of Circle of Slaughter, the wave‑based gauntlet mode from Borderlands 3. The mode has been reworked for Borderlands 4 and is free for all players. Each run consists of five rounds with escalating difficulty, optional extraction points and a new penalty box system that lets downed players influence the arena while spectating.

Looking ahead, Gearbox confirmed that Bounty Pack 4 will arrive in July alongside the Version 1.9 update. September will bring Bounty Pack 5, Story Pack 2, and a new playable Vault Hunter: Loveless the Hacker, an ex‑Anshin operative who fights alongside a physical manifestation of a self‑created digital virus.

Players who own the Super Deluxe Edition receive all Bounty Packs and Story Packs automatically, while the Deluxe Edition includes the full Bounty Pack bundle. All content is also available separately.

While the game was initially announced to be releasing on Nintendo Switch 2 roughly around the same time as its PC / home console counterparts, Borderlands 4 would later be indefinitely delayed, sparking concerns that the title might not make its way onto Nintendo’s handheld hybrid. According to the CEO of Take-Two, Borderlands 4 is still coming to the system, even though Nintendo is not a “primary console platform” for the publisher.

In a recent interview conducted by the publication GameFile, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked about the ongoing indefinite delay of Borderlands 4 on Switch 2, and whether the port had been cancelled.

According to Zelnick, one of the main reasons for the delay was to allow Gearbox time to fix up the PC version (which famously suffered from a troubled launch), stating: “We've been addressing those challenges, and we want to make sure that we've fully addressed Borderlands 4 from a consumer's point of view before we bring it to more platforms.”

Even so, Zelnick made it clear that Switch 2 will remain a secondary priority for the publisher, adding that “We want to be wherever the consumer is, and we've supported Switch 2. You can tell from what we are doing and what we're not doing that our primary console platforms remain Sony and Microsoft.”

While not directly stated, Zelnick is likely referring to Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year. Still, hopefully by the time GTA VI is out, Switch 2 owners will be able to finally try out Borderlands 4.

Last week, Gearbox officially announced that the first story DLC for Borderlands 4, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, will be rolling out to all platforms later this month. The biggest addition here is the new playable vault hunter, C4SH, who's combat kit has now been fully detailed in a new preview.

The first major expansion for Borderlands 4, Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is set to launch later this month, adding a new playable Vault Hunter, a fresh explorable zone, and a slate of bosses, missions and late‑game systems. The DLC sends players to The Whispering Glacier, a frozen region stalked by a cosmic entity and littered with derelict ships, eldritch growths and a newly discovered alien monolith.

C4SH can be used across the full game or jumped straight into the DLC at level 13. A full gameplay overview video can be found HERE.

C4SH’s trait, Windfall, triggers when he reloads from empty or activates an Action Skill, consuming stacks of Fortune to boost gun and skill damage while upgrading his abilities. His three Action Skills each lean into unpredictable outcomes: Cross‑Fire, a dual‑revolver barrage with ricochet potential during Windfall; Sleight of Hand, a spell‑flinging card volley with randomised draws; and Cleromancy, which summons Bone Totems based on supernatural dice rolls. His three skill trees, Chaos Walking, Luck of the Draw and Roll the Bones, eschew traditional capstones in favour of extra Augment slots, allowing up to four simultaneous modifiers.

Beyond the new Vault Hunter, the DLC adds two major boss fights, 16 minibosses, new enemy factions and a World Boss system that transports players to a nightmare dimension for randomised encounters. Loot includes new Pearlescent weapons, 11 Legendaries and 28 cosmetics. Borderlands 4 will also introduce shared progression across characters alongside the DLC, with cross‑platform saves planned for a later update.

The DLC will be released on March 26th for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 is still unavailable.

A new World Boss system transports players to a nightmare dimension where a random boss awaits. The pack also debuts C4SH, a CasinoBot turned rogue gambler who wields a magical deck to unleash randomized spells. C4SH features three Action Skills and three branching skill trees, with a full gameplay reveal coming next week.

Players can expect two major boss fights, 16 minibosses, and new enemy factions across the glacier. Loot drops include three Pearlescent weapons and 11 new Legendary items, plus 28 cosmetic additions ranging from Vault Hunter heads and skins to weapon, vehicle, and ECHO‑4 customisations.

Alongside the launch, Borderlands 4 will roll out shared progression across characters, with cross‑platform saves planned for a later update. Gearbox’s 2026 roadmap confirms free monthly content drops through the summer, including a raid boss in April, a Takedown in May, and Story Pack 2 arriving in Q3.

The latest DLC for Borderlands 4 is now rolling out. Bounty Pack 2: Legend of the Stone Demon is the first piece of paid post-launch content for the game, which hit PC and current-gen consoles in October. A Switch 2 version was also planned but appears to be on pause while Gearbox focuses on updates for the current versions of the game.

In this new DLC, players will set out on a mission to end a series of rituals and human sacrifices, culminating in a show down with the Stone Demon.

Alongside Bounty Pack 2, a major update has been released that brings Pearlescent gear to Borderlands 4. This is a new rarity tier, so players now have something to chase beyond the game's trove of legendary items.

Additional content in Bounty Pack 2 includes:

• 10 new pieces of powerful Legendary and Pearlescent loot
• Added rewards including a new Vault Hunter Skin, new Digirunner vehicle, and new ECHO-4 Drone Skin
• A Vault Card featuring 24 cosmetics and 4 rerollable pieces of new mecha- and kaiju-themed gear to unlock through gameplay

Players that own Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition are automatically granted access to Bounty Pack 2 and all content from the Bounty Pack Bundle (Bounty Packs 2, 3, 4, and 5) and Vault Hunter Pack (Story Packs 1 and 2), while Borderlands 4 Deluxe Edition grants the Bounty Pack Bundle.
