EXODUS Q&A: You Can’t Max Your Character in One Playthrough, and Your Final Squad May Differ From Everyone Else’s

4 September 2026 at 14:00

Two armored characters face off against a large bear-like creature with glowing crystals on its back in the game EXODUS.

Following my hour-long playthrough of EXODUS's Khonsu mission at gamescom 2026, I had the chance to speak with not one but three of the key developers from Archetype Entertainment: VP and General Manager Chad Robertson, Game Director Chris King, and Lead Writer Drew Karpyshyn. What followed was a wide-ranging conversation covering the studio's seven years of work on their debut IP, the shape of the universe it has built, and a great deal of detail about systems the demo only hinted at. Some highlights: the studio is a bit over 100 people in Austin, though with several hundred more contributing […]

Our EXODUS Hands-On Makes the Mass Effect Comparisons Unavoidable, As Archetype’s Debut Game Leans Hard Into Choices and Cover Shooting

4 September 2026 at 13:01

A battle scene in the video game 'Exodus' featuring armored characters using energy weapons against a large, robotic enemy.

It's been seven years since former BioWare veteran James Ohlen founded Archetype Entertainment in Austin, Texas, later revealing the studio's debut game as EXODUS. Ohlen has since left Archetype for personal reasons, but the hype for EXODUS remains high, especially among Mass Effect fans. Not only is the inspiration crystal-clear, but Archetype also hired the acclaimed writer of the original trilogy, Drew Karpyshyn, to create the game's narrative. Besides, the whole studio worked hard on the setting, even going so far as to get Peter F. Hamilton to publish two novels and to prepare a tabletop RPG handbook and other […]

15 May 2026 at 12:00

James Ohlen talks about his exit from EXODUS and his attempt to reboot SWTOR.

In early January, 22-year BioWare veteran James Ohlen suddenly left Archetype Entertainment, the Wizards of the Coast-backed studio he founded years earlier to create the Mass Effect-like sci-fi action RPG EXODUS.Β With the game now less than a year away from its early 2027 launch window, Ohlen's departure rang like an ominous bell for many fans, who feared something was wrong with the project. However, an interview published a few hours ago on PC Gamer should go a long way toward assuaging those concerns. Ohlen revealed that he suffered severe burnout while serving as both head of Archetype and creative director […]
