Whether you love them or hate them, Naughty Dog have achieved their current position in-part due to the studio’s fun and approachable gameplay – while of course including plenty of major story and set-piece moments. We’ve seen some studios in the past take on this formula, but according to reports, Tencent is working on an ambitious AAA title inspired by the likes of Uncharted, The Last of Us and Tomb Raider.

As collated by Reddit user ‘Multiliv’ Tencent has for at least a year been working on a mysterious AAA third-person action-adventure project. Full details on the game’s current timeline can be found HERE, but for our purposes the most interesting part is the game’s description.

Across the various job listings, it appears as though this project (codenamed ‘T’) will be taking heavy inspiration from its contemporaries, with one of the listings directly referencing Uncharted and Tomb Raider. This can be seen with its gameplay details, currently listing features including:

• Climbing
• Jumping
• Taking cover
• Aiming
• Dodging
• Hand-to-hand combat
• Firearms
• Terrain traversal
• Fluid transitions between exploration and combat
• Dynamic cinematic camera
• Close-quarters combat
• Movement during combat
• Collective AI behaviour
• Dynamic AI decision-making during combat

The full list of mechanics is lengthy, and includes many staples seen across most video games. That said, putting all of the details shared together does paint the picture of a game which functions similar to the likes of The Last of Us Part II – with its blend of brutal melee and firearms-based combat, advanced enemy AI; a focus on terrain variety and the importance of movement, positioning and taking cover.

Of course, part of what makes Naughty Dog’s games so compelling are their narratives and mechanical polish, and so it will be interesting to see whether Tencent is able to match these elements.

Recent datamining efforts have uncovered further evidence that Sony previously explored a full remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, with references and assets buried inside The Last of Us Part II and The Last of Us Part I’s development files. These findings support earlier leaks suggesting that a small slice of the original Uncharted was rebuilt internally before the project was ultimately cancelled.

Speaking to Last Stand Media, dataminer Thekempy explained that Sony’s Visual Arts Support Group experimented with the remake around 2018–2019. According to the discussion, the team rebuilt the plane‑to‑island sequence from Drake’s Fortune using Uncharted 4‑level visuals as a proof‑of‑concept. This test scene was created in the same engine used for The Last of Us Part II, which is why fragments of it later appeared in that game’s files.

“They actually made a tiny little slice of the game… Nate and Elena going to the island in Sully’s plane, getting shot down and parachuting out,” Thekempy said. “They remade that with Uncharted 4’s graphics as a test.”

Earlier datamining already pointed to this exact sequence, with code referencing the plane scene found inside The Last of Us Part II. As shown in a previous leak, the files directly reference the remake slice. A new leak posted this week appears to show additional assets tied to the same internal effort, as highlighted in the latest datamine.

Ultimately, the remake did not move forward. According to the podcast discussion, Naughty Dog decided that Drake’s Fortune would require extensive modernisation across its levels and set‑pieces to meet current expectations. Instead, Visual Arts shifted to The Last of Us Part I, a remake many fans criticised as unnecessary, given the original game’s strong visuals and its existing PS4 remaster.

KitGuru Says: The crazy part about this is that of all Naughty Dog's games, Uncharted 1 would have benefitted from a full remake the most. The other Uncharted games have aged better than the first, so a bit more effort would have been required, but it would have gone down with fans a lot better than *another* re-release of The Last of Us.

Since the launch of the PS5 generation, Naughty Dog has been in an interesting spot. With their previous live-service The Last of Us plans being ultimately cancelled, the studio has so far yet to release an original game this console generation. That said, it appears as though the team are hard at work right now on multiple different projects, with insiders claiming that alongside the previously-announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog is also working on new entries in both the Uncharted and Last of Us franchises.

A little over a year ago, known industry insider DanielRPK claimed that alongside development on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog were also working on a second mysterious project.

Since then, the studio itself confirmed as much, though very few additional details were shared. Now, in the wake of a recent post by Naughty Dog creative Director Shaun Escayg which seemed to show off research for what could be a new Uncharted title, DanielRPK has returned with new revelations.

Corroborating claims made by the insider ‘Alir’ it appears as though alongside the aforementioned mystery second project, a 3rd title is also in the works.

Though this should of course be taken with a pinch of salt, according to Alir the next title from Naughty Dog following Intergalactic will be a new Uncharted game. Then, at some point in the presumably distant future, this will be followed up by The Last of us Part III.

While TLOU Part II did offer a somewhat satisfying conclusion to the story of Joel and Ellie, there is certainly plenty of juice left in the tank to continue the narrative if Naughty Dog chooses to.

As mentioned however, Naughty Dog’s release schedule for this generation has been pretty barren, and so even assuming these leaks to be true, Intergalactic could still very well be the only new game we see from the team during this current console generation.

What was once their bread and butter, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise has not seen a new entry since the 2017 spin-off ‘The Lost Legacy’. Despite this, many fans continue to yearn for the return of the IP in one form or another (live-action movies not included). While it could very well be hopium, one of the creative directors at Naughty Dog has teased that they are conducting research for what appears to be a very Uncharted-esque project.

Taking to Instagram, Naughty Dog creative director Shaun Escayg shared a vibrant image of an old cannon overlooking a beautiful island alongside the caption “Research…”

While nothing else was provided in the way of details or context, fans quickly discovered that the picture in question was taken from Fort George in Trinidad & Tobago. Of course, even without the exact location, the photo itself gives major Uncharted vibes, leading many to hope that Naughty Dog could be in the early stages of work on a revival.

For context, Shaun Escayg is a creative director at Naughty Dog who is perhaps best known for leading the charge on the highly-underrated ‘The Lost Legacy’ spin-off back in 2017. Since then, the studio has been in a bit of an odd spot.

Of course, they launched the successful-yet-controversial The Last of Us Part II in 2020 followed by a remake of Part I in 2022. Unfortunately, the long-awaited TLOU Online was ultimately cancelled, and so as of right now all that is known officially is that the team are working on the brand new IP Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and a second mystery project.

Given that Intergalactic is being headed by Neil Druckmann, having Shaun Escayg take charge on bringing back Uncharted would make a great deal of sense. It will be interesting to see what this ‘research’ proves to be referring to.
