Obsidian Cancels Avowed 2 After Xbox Layoffs, Pivots to New Fallout Led by New Vegas Director

8 July 2026 at 18:45

The image features covers of two Obsidian games: Fallout: New Vegas with a soldier holding a rifle in front of the California Republic flag, and Avowed with a colorful, skeletal figure and the game title.

Obsidian Entertainment is one of the first-party Xbox studios most affected by the recent wave of layoffs. Kotaku had previously reported that the Irvine-based studio had lost around 25% of its staff, and that figure is now confirmed by two reputable sources: Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and Stephen Totilo, who wrote on Game File that 52 workers were cut from Obsidian based on a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice filed in California. However, the studio is far from dead. According to Schreier, it's being recalibrated from its previous plans. In November 2025, former Obsidian founder Chris Avellone revealed that […]

Obsidian Reportedly Returns To Fallout After 15 Years, As Xbox Shields Studio From Rumored Restructuring Wave

2 July 2026 at 15:32

The cover art for 'Fallout: New Vegas' shows a character in a post-apocalyptic setting holding a revolver, with a skyline featuring a tall tower and the game title prominently displayed.

[UPDATE - July 2, 11:29 AM] While Jason Schreier could confirm that Obsidian is not being considered for closure, the known games journalist also revealed on the ResetERA forums that the studio is not working on a new Fallout project, although this could be changing soon with Xbox's new direction. Original story follows. [Original Story] Despite the smashing success of the Fallout TV show on Amazon, Xbox and Bethesda failed to capitalize on it with a new entry in the series. Although the studio headed by Todd Howard is unlikely to work on a new entry in the franchise until […]

Asha Sharma’s Xbox Overhaul Targets Fallout, and Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds Team Looks Like the Perfect Fit

13 June 2026 at 12:00

A character from Fallout: New Vegas stands holding a 'New California Republic' flag, with the Obsidian Entertainment logo in the corner.

Obsidian Entertainment has created a lot of great roleplaying games over its 23-year history (the studio's anniversary was yesterday, by the way), but there is little doubt that its name, in the minds of the gaming mainstream, is synonymous with that of Fallout: New Vegas. The game wasn't actually a unanimous critical darling (it famously "only" got an average Metacritic score of 84, thus narrowly missing the 85 Metacritic score clause that Bethesda had added in the contract for an extra payout), but it certainly became a fan-favorite, owing to its excellent narrative, faction writing, roleplaying choices, memorable companions, and […]

The Elder Scrolls VI Slips Closer to a 20-Year Gap After Skyrim as Insider Pegs First Fallout Remake for 2027

23 May 2026 at 22:28

The image shows the title screen for The Elder Scrolls VI above artwork of a power armor helmet from Fallout.

The Elder Scrolls VI was announced eight years ago, and we have heard very little about the game since other than rumors regarding its Hammerfell setting. While the game is reportedly in a playable state, Todd Howard himself confirmed that the game is still far from release, joking that he has never heard of the game, and a new report from known Xbox insider Jez Corden suggests that this is indeed the case, as the next entry in the series is likely to debut close to 20 years after its predecessor, Skyrim. "I've heard that like, I don't know how […]

Fallout: New Vegas Dev Pours Cold Water on Remaster Rumors: β€œThey Have No Idea How to Reassemble It”

22 April 2026 at 18:00

A character in 'Fallout: New Vegas' wearing armor and holding a revolver stands against a red sky, with the city's skyline in the background.

Fallout: New Vegas Senior Designer and Writer Chris Avellone talked extensively about the Fallout franchise in a recent interview with YouTuber TKs-Mantis. Avellone (who also worked as a designer on Fallout 2 and on the canceled Van Buren project) claimed that, to his knowledge, Obsidian never provided the full source code of Fallout: New Vegas to Bethesda. Furthermore, as far as he knows, they don't have the knowledge to reassemble it, which constitutes a major problem for the rumored remaster. I don't think Bethesda has the engineering know-how to make a remaster of Fallout: New Vegas at all. And the […]

Iron Galaxy denies that it is working on Fallout remaster

4 March 2026 at 15:30

Earlier this week, Iron Galaxy appeared to be teasing something after posting about a company meeting, with an image attached of the Fallout β€˜Please Stand By' loading screen. Now after sending fans imaginations into overdrive, the studio has apologised.

It turns out, Iron Galaxy just uses the Fallout Please Stand By screen as a slide for its monthly meetings. The studio insists that it is not actually teasing a new game, such as a remaster for Fallout New Vegas.

β€œNope! There is nothing to see here. Sorry to disturb the volcanoes, but that was just a BTS look at our company meeting. We use that slide every month and has nothing to do with anything Fallout being worked on. As you can imagine, we love Fallout, too. Now pardon us as we retreat back into our vault”, Iron Galaxy said in its statement.

While a Fallout remaster does not seem to be in the works at Iron Galaxy after all, the studio would still be a good choice of partner studio for such a project. The company already has deep ties to Xbox via the Killer Instinct series, and it has worked with Bethesda on a number of Fallout projects previously as well.

KitGuru Says: As much as fans want to return to New Vegas, I do feel like we will see Bethesda's Fallout 3 remastered before we see Obsidian's game return.

Iron Galaxy may have teased a Fallout New Vegas remaster

3 March 2026 at 16:30

For years, fans have wanted to see Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas remastered for newer hardware. Development may have actually just begun on that exact thing, according to a teaser from Iron Galaxy Studios.Β

In a teaser image shared by the studio, Iron Galaxy declared that it had held its February meeting, attaching an image of the β€˜Please Stand By' loading screen from Fallout: New Vegas. The belief now is that Iron Galaxy has been tapped to aid in the development of a New Vegas remaster. So far, neither Iron Galaxy nor Bethesda have denied the rumour.

Iron Galaxy Studios has worked closely with both Xbox and Bethesda in the past, handling development for Killer Instinct 3, as well as providing support for projects like The Elder Scrolls Online, Skyrim (various ports) and Fallout 76.

Considering Iron Galaxy's history with Bethesda and the Fallout IP, the studio does make sense for helping out on a remaster. Hopefully it will match the same quality bar that Virtuos set with the Oblivion remaster.
