Obsidian Cancels Avowed 2 After Xbox Layoffs, Pivots to New Fallout Led by New Vegas Director

Obsidian Entertainment is one of the first-party Xbox studios most affected by the recent wave of layoffs. Kotaku had previously reported that the Irvine-based studio had lost around 25% of its staff, and that figure is now confirmed by two reputable sources: Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and Stephen Totilo, who wrote on Game File that 52 workers were cut from Obsidian based on a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice filed in California. Obsidian Entertainment has created a lot of great roleplaying games over its 23-year history (the studio's anniversary was yesterday, by the way), but there is little doubt that its name, in the minds of the gaming mainstream, is synonymous with that of Fallout: New Vegas. Fallout: New Vegas Senior Designer and Writer Chris Avellone talked extensively about the Fallout franchise in a recent interview with YouTuber TKs-Mantis. Avellone (who also worked as a designer on Fallout 2 and on the canceled Van Buren project) claimed that, to his knowledge, Obsidian never provided the full source code of Fallout: New Vegas to Bethesda.
