Diablo V Promises More Classes Than Any Previous Diablo Game, as Blizzard Brings Back Procedural Overworlds and Diablo II Runewords

14 September 2026 at 10:00

The logo for Diablo V features fiery text with a dark background.

Blizzard's most surprising reveal at BlizzCon 2026 was undoubtedly the announcement of Diablo V, of which we had had no rumors prior to the Opening Ceremony. Even more interesting is the fact that Diablo V won't be about stopping the titular Lord of Terror, but about what happens after he's already taken Sanctuary. That premise had fans excited about this twist, and the ‘Forging the Next Era’ panel offered them plenty of details about the project due in Spring 2029. The panel featured Blizzard president Johanna Faries as the host, while Senior Game Director Joe Shely, Senior Production Director Tiffany […]

Diablo V reveals more classes than any Diablo game before it

Blizzard just dropped the biggest surprise of BlizzCon 2026, and not a small one. Diablo V is real, and instead of another “stop the Lord of Terror” story, it drops you into a Sanctuary where Diablo already won.

Diablo V Teaser

A world Diablo already rules

Seven years before the game starts, Diablo took Westmarch and turned it into his throne room. The Western Continent is basically a Hell outpost now. Humans who haven’t bowed are either running cults or getting dragged into soul cages, and a handful of corrupted Dread Commanders are wandering around with power that rivals actual Hell dukes.

You play the Heir to Westmarch, the one person who can walk into Diablo’s personal Terror Realm and survive it. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler was refreshingly blunt about one thing too: no morally grey Diablo here. He’s not misunderstood, he’s not sympathetic, he’s just Diablo. Good.

Procedural generation returns to both Dungeons and the Overworld

Here’s the bit that’ll actually change how the game plays. The Dread Commanders are physically reshaping Sanctuary, a process the team’s nicknamed Terror Forming, and that means the overworld regenerates too, not just dungeons. Go back to a zone you cleared and the landmarks, monsters and loot can all be different the second time round.

Game director Joe Shely said the goal is making sure players never feel safe, which is a lot easier when every town in the game has already been wiped off the map.

No towns means a travelling caravan instead

That last point forced Blizzard into a genuinely interesting design choice. With no civilians left to hand out quests, side content now comes entirely from a travelling caravan of survivors you build up as you go. Merchants, crafters, companions, all picked up along the road.

So far we’ve got a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a treasure goblin called Zarg, who’s tagging along purely because you’re an easier target than Diablo is. Fair.

Three classes confirmed, with more coming at launch than ever before

On the class front, Blizzard confirmed Demon Hunter, Monk and a brand new one called Plague Knight, a walking-disease tank who spreads pestilence then eats it for power.

Another main point; Diablo V will launch with more total classes than any Diablo game has ever had at launch, full stop, not just more than that specific game shipped with originally.

Runes, Runewords and Diablo II-Style itemisation

Itemisation is going back to Diablo II roots too, with Runes and Runewords confirmed alongside multi-slot inventory space for bigger items. Gear sets are returning as well, though Blizzard’s learned from the Lord of Hatred expansion and wants sets tied to the actual gear this time, not a separate talisman system bolted on the side.

Diablo V will release around Spring 2029, which is a long wait, but Blizzard’s opening sign-ups now and promising regular updates starting next year. Given how much they’re already showing, I’d say this one’s worth keeping an eye on early.

Diablo V Is Real: Blizzard Shocks with a Sequel Where Sanctuary Has Already Fallen, Launching Spring 2029

12 September 2026 at 18:30

A fiery scene depicts a castle under siege with the text 'Diablo V' and 'Official Teaser' prominently displayed.

At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment made a surprise announcement of Diablo V, a new installment in the hack-and-slash action RPG franchise. The new game will be released in Spring 2029 and will place players in a Sanctuary that has already fallen to Diablo, giving it an entirely different vibe from what fans are used to. For now, that's all we got, but a panel titled Diablo V: Forging the Next Era is scheduled for later today, where the developers will unveil their overarching vision. It's a long lead time, that's for sure. Looking back, though, if there are no delays, […]

Blizzard reportedly wants new Diablo games to release more often

9 September 2026 at 10:30

Despite being one of Blizzard’s biggest IPs, Diablo as a franchise has had relatively few mainline entries, with ‘just’ 4 titles in total being released over the past 30 years. That said, things appear to be shifting behind the scenes, with one insider claiming that Blizzard “wants the waiting time between tentpole Diablo launches to be shorter.”

As reported by known Microsoft / Xbox insider Jez Corden via Windows Central, Blizzard are hoping to capitalise more greatly on the Diablo IP, with the leaker claiming to have heard that they want “the waiting time between tentpole Diablo launches to be shorter, although it's probably still too early for a reveal of Diablo 5.”

Blizzard Insider

As mentioned, the Diablo series has been relatively reserved when it comes to pumping out new releases, with 2023’s Diablo IV launching an entire decade and then some following Diablo III. Likewise, Diablo III arrived 12 years after II.

Of course, in between each release fans were kept satiated with new expansions / DLC. Though this practice is set to still continue (with Diablo IV having already received 2 major expansions), it appears as though we might not have to wait until 2034 for the next mainline entry – for better or for worse.

KitGuru says: 3 years on, how are you feeling about Diablo IV? Would you welcome more sequels at a faster rate, or do you prefer the roughly 1 game per decade schedule? Let us know down below.
