Crystal Dynamics explains how GenAI was used during the development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

12 June 2026 at 08:00

Generative AI in video game development has become an increasingly contentious topic, more-so in recent days as various new game announcements from the past week have been found to be using the controversial tool. One such title is Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, whose Steam page noted the use of GenAI. Responding to the criticism, the studio has now claimed that β€œAt the end, all the finished product in the final game will be human-crafted.”

Taking part in an interview with the publication Polygon, Crystal Dynamics’ β€˜Experience Director’ Jeff Adams offered clarity on how GenAI was / is being used for the development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, stating:

β€œAt Crystal Dynamics, we see AI as a tool that can help our team get the right answers faster. In early level development, we might have the idea for an in-game object. But we might not be sure if we want to take the time to have devs build it. What we can do is use a generative AI tool to visualize it in the world. If it works, we can move it into our traditional pipeline. From there, the team can concept it and build it.”

Adams continued, β€œAt the end, all the finished product in the final game will be human-crafted. We want to make it as easy as possible for our team to be able to make high-quality experiences. That’s what the fans deserve.”

Whether this explanation is good enough or not is for you to decide. For some, using GenAI even during the early stages of the project can have an impact on how the title is conceptualised. Even if fully replaced later on, the initial template with which they are building upon is one based on generative AI.

All that said, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is not the first game to use such tools, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Crystal Dynamics Uses GenAI Tools with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis to β€œGet the Right Answers Faster”

11 June 2026 at 17:33

A character in 'Tomb Raider' stands in a lost temple, facing a large, overgrown statue surrounded by ancient columns and sculptures.

Last week, shortly after Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis appeared in the State of Play showcase, when the game's Steam page went live, players quickly noticed the page included a Generative AI (GenAI) use disclosure. Since then, we've been trying to get more clarity from developer Crystal Dynamics on how the studio uses GenAI, and experience director Jeff Adams has somewhat clarified its use, identifying GenAI as a "tool," one that helps the team "get the right answers faster." Adams comments come from an interview with Game Informer, which also includes a short video of his answer to the question […]

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Recommends an NVIDIA RTX 3080/ 6800 XT β€” And the Real Specs Could Hit Harder

Earlier than most publishers do, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Game Studios have revealed the Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis PC system requirements, and it's not good news for anyone playing on a mainstream GPU, though it's hardly surprising, considering the game is powered by Unreal Engine 5. The system specifications published on the game's Steam store page detail the minimum and recommended requirements early, but with a significant catch: there's no indication of target resolution and framerate. Requirement Minimum Specifications Recommended Specifications OS Windows 10/11 (64-bit) Windows 10/11 (64-bit) Processor Intel Core i5-8600 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel Core […]

Last night during PlayStation's State of Play event for June 2026, Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog showcased more of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and also confirmed rumours that it had been delayed into next year with the announcement of a February 12, 2027, release date. After the dust settled, however, and the initial craze of all the announcements had passed, players spotted a key point on the game's Steam page: a disclosure that Generative AI (GenAI) tools were used in an "early exploration" phase of development. The statement on the game's Steam page reads, "AI-assisted tools were used […]

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis May Not Have Been Delayed After All, As Support Studio Reaffirms 2026 Release Window

8 May 2026 at 11:39

A character from Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis standing in a lush jungle environment, looking upwards with a focused expression.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will mark the return of the series on PC and consoles in years, but last month, it seemed the remake of the very first entry in the series would take longer than anticipated to release and only see the light of day in 2027. According to a recent post on the official LinkedIn profile of developer Electric Square, spotted by Tomb Raider Chronicles, this won't be the case, as the game is still set for a 2026 release. "Electric Square is honoured to have supported Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog on their upcoming reimagination […]

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is one of the two new Tomb Raider titles that developer Crystal Dynamics announced during The Game Awards 2025. It's the one that is a full remake of the very first Tomb Raider game, and the one that'll have "completely rebuilt" combat and exploration systems, according to its game director. Tomb Raider studio undergoes another round of layoffs

20 March 2026 at 16:30

Crystal Dynamics has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs over the past year. Unfortunately, the Tomb Raider studio is still struggling and as a result, another round of layoffs is now taking place.Β

Crystal Dynamics confirmed this week that it is letting go of another 20 employees. Some of those impacted will be game development talent, while others who work in central operations roles will also be affected by the cuts.

Crystal Dynamics said that this is β€œa difficult day” for the studio, which is currently working on not just one but two new Tomb Raider titles. The first is a complete remake of the original Tomb Raider game, and the second is a brand-new title set after the events of Tomb Raider Underworld.

Crystal Dynamics says it remains β€œfully committed” to the development of these games. Unfortunately, we do not yet have release dates for either title but at least one of them is due out in 2026.

KitGuru Says: Crystal Dynamics has been in an unfortunate position. After being acquired by Embracer Group, that company fell into financial dire straits. As a result, Amazon signed up to publish the next Tomb Raider game but now in recent months, Amazon has decided to drastically reduce its game development and publishing operations.Β
