Stalker 2 gets major 2.0 update and new expansion in August

27 July 2026 at 13:00

GSC Game World has officially announced the release date for Cost of Hope, the upcoming major expansion for Stalker 2. The new expansion arrives in August, alongside a major free 2.0 update for the base game.Β

As revealed through a new trailer, Stalker 2: Cost of Hope is now launching on August 20th. The new expansion will send players on a new quest line to discover new weapons, encounter new enemies and explore previously uncharted locations.

While Cost of Hope is a paid expansion, there is also something to look forward to for those who only own the base game. August 20th will also bring the release of Stalker 2 V2.0, a major free update that upgrades the game to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5 with additional stability and performance improvements.

There is still a lot we don't know about update 2.0 and the Cost of Hope expansion, but we won't have to wait long to learn more, as both are just a few weeks away.

GSC pushes back on Stalker 2 funding claims

23 July 2026 at 15:00

Earlier this week, a former GSC Game World founder claimed that Stalker 2 essentially paid for itself on day one thanks to a major timed exclusivity deal with Xbox. Now, the studio has issued a response pushing back on those comments.

GSC Game World clarified that the founder was not involved in negotiations or development during Stalker 2’s production. In a statement to Insider Gaming, the studio said his remarks β€œcannot be considered an accurate reflection of the actual state of affairs”.

The studio added that Sergiy Grygorovych β€œwas not involved either in negotiations with partners regarding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 or in the actual development of the game throughout its full production cycle”, stressing that GSC β€œalways fully honoured these agreements”. As a result, the company says his statements should not be treated as representative of how the project was funded or managed.

GSC also described Stalker 2 as β€œone of the most challenging projects in the history of the video game industry”, emphasising that the story of the game β€œshould be based on facts, not on assumptions or subjective opinions”. While the studio did not directly deny the possibility that the Xbox deal covered development costs, it is clear that GSC was unhappy with how the situation was characterised and is seeking to correct the narrative.

Stalker 2 is set to make headlines again pretty soon, as the game's first major expansion, The Cost of Hope, is set to release later this year.

KitGuru Says: I wasn't expecting Grygorovych's comments to be controversial but here we are. At any rate, we should all be looking forward to Stalker 2's upcoming expansion. The base game is already fantastic, especially now that a number of earlier bugs have been fixed.Β

Stalker 2 is getting its first expansion this Summer

27 March 2026 at 12:30

STALKER 2 has been out for almost a year and a half now and during that time, GSC Game World has issued a lot of major updates to the game at no extra cost. Now, fans have new adventures to look forward to, with the first major expansion, titled β€˜Cost of Hope', coming out later this year.Β

Stalker 2: Cost of Hope will be arriving in Summer 2026, assuming there are no delays. The new expansion was revealed as part of the Xbox Partner Preview showcase earlier this week with a full new trailer, which you can see below:

Once a player installs the new DLC and loads up their save, they will get a new signal on the PDA that will trigger new storyline events as the main game unfolds. The Cost of Hope expansion is intended to be played alongside the main game, so those who have already beat Stalker 2 may want to consider spinning up a new save file and re-experiencing the game again.

As part of the expansion, players will get two new areas on the map to explore, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest. Each of these zones has its own hub area, along with new quests and activities, as well as new loot items that you won't find elsewhere on the map.

Better yet, GSC Game World has also confirmed that a second story expansion is also on the way, although details on that won't be revealed until a later date. Presumably, we will hear more about that DLC in 2027.

KitGuru Says: Stalker 2 has been on my radar for a while but with this DLC being set to take place alongside the main game, I may hold off for a while longer. Have you played Stalker 2 already? Are you planning on jumping back in for the new expansion?Β
