Beast of Reincarnation Borrows Crimson Desert’s Playbook, as Game Freak Scrambles to Fix Its Divisive Debut With Story Improvements

Beast of Reincarnation, Pokémon series developer Game Freak's first major new IP in a very long time, is now out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and the initial reception has been mixed, to say the least. While I enjoyed the game quite a bit despite its issues, awarding it an 8.5 score, many other gamers did not, as technical performance issues, a very slow start, and derivative mechanics did not sit well with them. However, the Japanese developer isn't going to leave the game in its launch state, taking a leaf from the Crimson Desert playbook to […]

Game Freak’s Beast of Reincarnation launches to solid reviews

5 August 2026 at 11:00

After spending the past 3 decades working almost exclusively on Pokemon titles, Game Freak surprised many when they announced Beast of Reincarnation – a fast-paced and visually impressive action-RPG unlike anything else the studio has made before. Alongside its official launch, reviews for the game have now gone live, showcasing a game which seems to fall just shy of its great potential.

With a Metacritic score of 73 and an Open Critic rating of 76, Beast of Reincarnation has failed to reach the heights of their last mainline Pokemon game (Legends Z-A with a Metacritic score of 78) but did manage to beat out 2022’s Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (which achieved a 71).

Described as a “surprisingly strong action title from Game Freak”; a “bold new step” for the studio and a “compelling” entry with “firm but fair combat”, Beast of Reincarnation does seem to have quite a bit going for it.

Unfortunately, all is not perfect, with some of the game’s primary issues being its over-ambition; a narrative which did not resonate with all; and somewhat uninspired level design.

Between Pokemon and Beast of Reincarnation, there is a clear step up on quality pretty much across the board. Unlike pokemon however, the genre which Beast of Reincarnation is trying to enter is far more competitive – making expectations rather high.

Even so, Beast of Reincarnation proves that Game Freak is able to offer far more than what Nintendo typically have them working on. It will be interesting to see what the studio chooses to do from here on out.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Beast of Reincarnation so far? Objectively, how does it compare to their other games? What genre would you like to see Game Freak take a stab at next? Let us know down below.

Beast of Reincarnation Review – Turn-Based Meets Action In A Solid Action RPG from Pokémon Studio Game Freak

4 August 2026 at 00:00

A character and a white wolf walk through a forest under the title 'Beast of Reincarnation'.

Although Game Freak is primarily known as the developer of the Pokémon series, the Japanese developer has worked on other projects unrelated to the massively popular franchise. None of them became truly successful, as they were relatively minor projects compared to the behemoth that is the Pokémon franchise. As the developer's history outside of the Pokémon franchise is not well known, many were surprised when Beast of Reincarnation was announced back in 2023 as Project Bloom. Although the Japanese developer only handled creative direction and the overall project management, leaving much of the actual development to external partners, Game Freak's name […]
