Season 4 looks to be no different, with the latest update introducing a plethora of exciting additions – including a brand new rogue-lite mode for Zombies.

Live right now, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Season 4 has added a ton to the game across all modes. The full list of changes and additions can be found HERE, but some of the most notable include:

Love it or hate it, there is no denying that Black Ops 7 has so far been one of the most supported titles in the franchise’s history. It will be interesting to see what the perception surrounding BO7 will be by the time it reaches its final Season later this year.

Infinity Ward promises to tone down crossover skins in Modern Warfare 4

1 June 2026 at 09:00

In recent years Call of Duty has gotten an increasing amount of flack for their games’ visual identities being ruined by an abundance of weird, wacky and unexpected cosmetics. 2024’s Black Ops 6 was perhaps the worst in this regard, featuring crossovers with the likes of American Dad and Beavis and Butthead; both of which included distractingly different art styles to the rest of the game. While last year’s Black Ops 7 already took steps forward in this regard, the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 is promising to remain “authentic” “grounded” and “transparent.”

With Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 now having been officially announced, the lead dev team at Infinity Ward have started to be more active online, responding to fans while also addressing various concerns.

With regards to cosmetics, Infinity Ward took to Twitter to claim that “Every aspect of Modern Warfare 4 is anchored in the game's narrative. Every feature, every decision needs to feel authentic to what Modern Warfare is, and that includes cosmetics and collabs. We're committed to keeping it grounded and transparent, and we want to hear from you on what you'd like to see in our game.”

Modern Warfare Call of Duty

While we have yet to see what IW have in mind for MW4 throughout its live-service support period, the team have set the tone, confirming that skins in the vein of Nicki Minaj and Beavis and Butt-Head won’t be featured.

In response to one sceptical player who joked that the game will likely include “Lady Gaga, Omni-Man, or some other goofy collaboration” the official Call of Duty Community Manager page replied with “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts.”

As mentioned, Call of Duty have already toned back their cosmetics with Black Ops 7. That said, the game still includes plenty of non-military themed skins and blueprints. As such, it will be interesting to see how far Infinity Ward are choosing to take MW4’s grounded visual identity – especially as the Seasons progress.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

31 May 2026 at 16:00

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision; Treyarch; Infinity Ward; Sledgehammer Games and about a dozen other studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release.

And so it comes as no surprise that 2026 will see the arrival of yet another Call of Duty. Rumoured to be Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward, leakers and dataminers have already uncovered a number of details pertaining to this supposed current-gen console exclusive. But what about 2027, or 2028 or 2029? Well, by looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can – with some degree of accuracy – predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries. So, from Modern Warfare 4 in 2026 all the way up until 2030, let’s find out what I think is in store for Call of Duty.

Call of Duty COD

Given the rotating nature of lead dev teams for Call of Duty, this year’s COD entry has already been long in development at Infinity Ward, with leaks and rumours claiming that it will be titled Modern Warfare 4. As such, while I will touch briefly on my predictions for the next game, it is worth first looking at these aforementioned leaks.

Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare entries have always tried to remain more grounded, especially in comparison to the likes of Treyarch’s Black Ops sub-series. Thus, come the arrival of MW4 later this year, insiders have stated that the next COD will be removing omni-movement in favour of focusing once again on tactical sprinting as a core mechanic.

Beyond this, MW4 is said to be slower-paced overall while also removing the dedicated melee slot (which has become somewhat of a staple for the franchise in recent years). Perhaps the biggest leak however comes with the claim that MW4’s 3rd game mode outside of multiplayer and the campaign will be a return of their DMZ extraction mode. Previously a free-to-play addition included as part of Warzone, DMZ 2.0 will instead be tied directly to the premium version of MW4.

Outside of leaks, the only official detail we have for the next COD is the recent confirmation that it will be the first entry to leave last-gen consoles behind. With these leaks in mind what do I think Modern Warfare 4 will entail?

On the campaign side of things, I believe that MW4 will finally mark the end of the Modern Warfare series. Since the release of the OG Modern Warfare back in 2007, Infinity Ward have worked exclusively on this particular sub-franchise – with the only respite coming with 2016’s Infinite Warfare (an underrated game imo).

After making a Modern Warfare trilogy followed by a Modern Warfare quadrilogy, it’s time for Infinity Ward to put the MW series to rest. What’s the best way to do this? By killing the face of the series of course.

I believe Captain Price himself will unfortunately be killed in action during a heroic moment of sacrifice…except he won’t actually be dead and by the end of the campaign (possibly in a post-credits scene) will come out of the shadows brandishing a new and ‘cool’ looking scar. As mentioned, this will mark the end of the Modern Warfare series and so this reveal ultimately won’t go anywhere, but I believe it will still happen.

Quickly rounding out the other two main modes: the multiplayer will include at least one core feature/mechanic/change which will prove to be highly controversial. Infinity Ward will then begrudgingly change course following launch. DMZ on the other hand will be well liked, with seasonal support and the inclusion of PvP and PvE modes making for a much more fleshed out experience compared to its first iteration. 2027 is where it starts to get far more interesting.

Unlike the upcoming Modern Warfare 4, we know very little about what to expect from Sledgehammer Games’s next offering. That said, there have been some early details shared, and so we’ll go over them first.

According to insiders, COD 2027 is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and will introduce a brand new sub-series. No name has been provided, but the title will reportedly be set during the modern era; and while there won’t be any jetpacks involved; movement is said to be a big focus for this entry – including potentially an element of martial arts. Last but certainly not least, COD 2027 will apparently not feature a zombies mode.

With all of the ‘confirmed’ details out of the way, it’s time to speculate. First thing’s first, what will this new sub-series be called? Unlike Treyarch and Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer’s games have not followed any consistent naming scheme, and so it could wind up being pretty much anything: Call of Duty Modern Vanguard; Call of Duty Contemporary Combat; Call of Duty WW3…the possibilities are endless. That said, I’ve decided to settle on Call of Duty: Espionage.

As can be gleaned from the name, COD 2027’s campaign will see you take control of a special elite team. Focused more on stealth than any previous narrative, players will feel low-key like a ninja as they infiltrate enemy bases using acrobatics and an interactable environment to make for emergent and dynamic gameplay – or so they will claim at the very least.

Multiplayer (and gameplay as a whole) will lend itself to the espionage theme, with quick and reactive movement being core to the experience. Players will be able to dodge roll; quick turn; do slide executions and even have a proto-parkour system with wider gaps able to be leapt between.

The obligatory 3rd gamemode this time will be a sandbox experience in which players will need to infiltrate and complete missions – leaning into similar design principles from the campaign. Players will be able to take these on co-operatively, but only with one other teammate.

2028 is where we get into pure speculation. Presumably being developed by Treyarch, who are currently still working on live-service content for Black Ops 7, nothing is known about what is in store next from the Black Ops team.

What do I predict will be coming? Well, just as how Modern Warfare 4 will mark the end of the MW series, Treyarch’s next game will be the first in its own brand new sub-series. Titled Call of Duty: Dark Ops, this new sub-franchise will borrow many familiar elements from the thematic energy of Black Ops while allowing them to start from scratch.

The campaign will be set during an alternate history World War 1…except we won’t know that initially. Throughout the campaign, things will get weirder and eventually the big reveal will happen somewhere during the second half of the story. I’m thinking ‘secret experiments’ and heavy occult vibes from this new franchise.

On the multiplayer / gameplay side of things, Treyarch will reintroduce omnimovement but in a new way, feeling grittier and more grounded – even if just through an overhauled animation set. Additionally, dolphin diving will be reworked.

Of course, being a Treyarch game, there will also be a new Zombies experience. With the modern mechanics having been pretty much perfected at this point, Dark Ops Zombies will take things back to formula with an overhaul of many of the core systems. Aesthetically, the game will borrow heavily from Vanguard Zombies and its more demonic vibes. Last but not least, Endgame from BO7 will return as a hybrid between what we have now and Cold War’s Zombies-focused Outbreak mode.

2029 will see the return of Infinity Ward, this time introducing their own new sub-series alongside a slight engine refresh to take greater advantage of next-gen consoles (though it will of course still be cross-gen). Seeing as how IW can’t stay away from the Warfare sub title, this new series will be called something like Total Warfare; Global Warfare or World Warfare.

Still set during the modern era just like the MW series – albeit in a whole new world – the campaign will take inspiration from the current real-world political conflicts and will even include a mission on the Strait of Hormouz Freedom. Last but not least, the iconic Captain Price will be reincarnated in the form of Captain Cost.

On the gameplay / multiplayer side of things World Warfare will go all in on ‘immersion’ offering vehicle driving but only in first person; a tactical reload and some form of bleed system/mechanic.

The 3rd mode this time round will be a sort of inverse to Sledgehammer’s offering where you will instead start with nothing, separated from your platoon and needing to fight / survive your way out of sticky situations. Once again, driving will be a core mechanic, but so too will water – with them changing how swimming works in COD for the 17th time. Like with Sledgehammer’s 3rd mode however, there will also be missions you can complete for different forms of metaprogression.

Finally, we have reached 2030. While it seems like still a ways away, Sledgehammer’s successor to Call of Duty Espionage will arrive before you know it, taking what worked with its 2027 release and expanding upon it.

Campaign wise, the story will take us to the medium-future – around 10 years on from the events of the first game. Appropriately named Esp[II]onage, the narrative will be set primarily on the continent of Asia and will build upon the movement tech from their previous entry with an emphasis on verticality and new mechanics.

These mechanics will of course blend over into its multiplayer, with a new grappling system not seen previously in COD. Unlike a typical grapple hook, this will only allow you to grab onto 4 directions: left, right, forwards and backwards. Think about it like Sledgehammer’s own Advanced Warfare and its Exosuits – except you can’t boost upwards. Adding to this will be a new gimmick which arrives as quickly as it’s forgotten: that being the ability to briefly block bullets in a region using a pop-up forearm shield.

Espionage 2 will see its obligatory 3rd game mode take things in a far more experimental direction. Utilising rogue-like elements to allow for greater replayability and dynamism while offering further verticality, this infiltration mode will feel like a parallel sibling to Arkane’s Dishonored series – even bringing in a bit of a mystical element into the gameplay. Players will appreciate its creativity and fun element, however as is typical, there will be complaints regarding the less-than-realistic aspects to the game mode.

With Sledgehammer Games finally being able to release a direct sequel to one of their sub-series, and both Infinity Ward and Treyarch having introduced their own new sub-franchises, the runway for the following half a decade of Call of Duty releases will have been established.

What’ll be released in 2031, 2032 or even 2035? We will have to wait and see, but now you know what to expect from the next half-a-decade worth of Call of Duty games.

KitGuru says: What do you think the next 5 Call of Duty games will look like? Will they still be releasing games annually by the 2030s? What are your hopes for Sledgehammer’s rumoured new series? Let us know down below.

Call of Duty Warzone is being delisted for last-gen consoles next week

29 May 2026 at 11:00

Prior to the official announcement for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, Activision confirmed that this year’s entry would be leaving last-gen consoles behind – marking the first game to be released exclusively on current-gen hardware. At the time, it was unknown what would become of COD’s free-to-play Warzone. Now we know, with Activision confirming that Warzone will be delisted (on PS4 and Xbox One) as soon as next week.

Making the surprise announcement on their blog, the team at Activision revealed that they are leaving last-gen Warzone behind in a rather rapid fashion.

Though the game will technically be playable on PS4 / Xbox One up until the arrival of MW4 Season 1 (likely sometime in November / December), the last-gen version of Warzone is being officially delisted from storefronts next week on the 4th of June.

Warzone Last-gen

As mentioned, you’ll still be able to redownload the game and keep playing for now, but come Season 1 of MW4 all last-gen support will be officially ended.

The full post (including an FAQ detailing what will happen to you COD Points etc) can be found HERE, with more information on Modern Warfare 4 itself available HERE.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially announced

29 May 2026 at 09:00

Given that a brand new Call of Duty title releases every single year, it comes as little surprise that 2026 would see a new entry during the latter half of the year. Previously confirmed to be in development at Infinity Ward, Microsoft / Activision have now officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – launching this October.

Making the official announcement via a story-focused trailer (with further details coming from various COD content creators who were given the chance to play early), Modern Warfare 4 will be launching on the 23rd of October, and as expected, will be leaving 8th-gen consoles behind while supporting the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.

While there is still plenty to learn, Infinity Ward did detail some of the new innovations coming with MW4, including an overhaul of the game’s depth of field and muzzle effects; new climbing / mantling mechanics; the replacing of omni-movement and a reworked prestige system.

Perhaps the biggest change gameplay-wise however is the elimination of weapon bloom – meaning hip-firing should be far more accurate and effective at all ranges.

Content wise, Activision has shown off a number of different maps and weapons which will be present at launch, including 12 wholly original 6v6 maps alongside some dedicated Gunfight and Big War experiences.

The most exciting yet-least-known aspect of MW4 comes with its DMZ mode. Initially released in beta for free during Modern Warfare 2 (2022)’s life cycle, this fully-featured 3rd mode will be properly shown off on the 7th of June – presumably during the Xbox Games Showcase.

Rumoured Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 might be coming to last-gen consoles

5 May 2026 at 12:00

Like with many other annual franchises, Call of Duty has continued to release its games onto last-gen consoles – meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While early reports claimed that 2026’s entry (believed to be Modern Warfare 4) would be the first to launch exclusively on 9th-gen consoles, new leaks seem to suggest that Infinity Ward’s next title could still be targeting last-gen.

As reported by known Call of Duty leaker HeyImAlaix, 2026’s upcoming and unannounced COD title (believed to be Modern Warfare 4) “is currently being playtested on PS4.”

While it does not mean that the final game will make its way onto last-gen devices, this report is interesting as previous leaks claimed that 2026’s Call of Duty would be running on a new version of the IW Engine – and as such would be the first to be PS5/Xbox Series exclusive.

The official Call of Duty account on Twitter has since commented on the leak, writing: “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4”. While this seems to definitively refute the rumour, the specific wording of “not being developed for PS4” does leave some leeway for them to later claim that it's being developed for current-gen but will be back-ported to last-gen.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare

In case you missed it, various details regarding this year’s COD have spread over the past few months, with claims being made that it will be called Modern Warfare 4; will make use of an updated engine; is said to feature a new version of their DMZ extraction mode and as mentioned will be current-gen only.

All that said, since the introduction of Call of Duty HQ much of the work being done on future COD entries has leaked in one form or another – due to the unified nature of the engine – and so it is entirely possible that evidence of their development on PS4 is simply a by-product of this. We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: Are you interested in this year’s Call of Duty? Would it being a current-gen exclusive help or hinder the game? Will MW4 try to release before GTA VI? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Call of Duty film gets official release date and director announcement

17 April 2026 at 11:00

Late last year in a wholly unexpected announcement, it was revealed that Activision’s blockbuster annual FPS franchise Call of Duty would be receiving a film adaptation in partnership with the movie giant Paramount. While details remained light at the time, we have now gotten our first official update on the project – with the film set to premiere in a little over 2 years’ time.

Making the announcement during their recent CinemaCon appearance, Paramount Pictures officially confirmed that the live-action Call of Duty film adaptation will premiere in cinemas on the 30th of June 2028.

Alongside its release date, they also revealed who will helm the project, with Taylor Sheridan and Pete Berg serving as script writers – and the latter also taking on directorial duties.

While far from the most prestigious of directors, Berg has released a fair few films of note over the years, including the likes of 2003’s The Rundown; 2008’s Hancock; 2012’s Battleship and the Oscar-nominated Deepwater Horizon (nominated specifically for its sound editing and visual effects).

Call of Duty Film

Speaking on this latest announcement (as transcribed by TheHollywoodReporter), Activision’s Rob Kostich claimed to have “told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it's right. In David Ellison [Paramount’s CEO], we found that partnership. We want to make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuse that with epic scope.”

As a director, Berg has worked on many different action-packed films, many of which also manage to include enough emotion in them to make for a compelling story. As such, it will be highly interesting to see what direction they choose to take the Call of Duty film in – especially given that the source material stretches from WWII all the way to the far flung future.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest announcement? Do you have any interest in this Call of Duty film? What era of COD would you like to see the adaptation tackle? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Future Call of Duty games might not launch Day-One on Xbox Game Pass

13 April 2026 at 11:00

Over its nearly 10 years of operation, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass has undergone many different iterations. That said, throughout all of it, one standard which has remained true is the fact that first-party Microsoft titles would launch day-and-date onto the subscription service in conjunction with their wider releases. It seems as though this could come to an end however, with one insider claiming that future Call of Duty entries in particular could be exempt from day-one Game Pass launches.

As reported by known Xbox insider Jez Corden via the XB2 Podcast, the addition of Call of Duty to Game Pass as a day-one title could come to an end after just two years.

While its inclusion was certainly a boon to the service, reports over the past few years have indicated that sales for COD have taken a notable hit as a result of their Game Pass arrivals; adding up to the tune of $300 million in potential losses.

As a result, it appears as though the strategy might be shifting, with Corden claiming that “it’ll be interesting to see like if…if they take Call of Duty out of Game Pass this year, which is a possibility from what I’ve heard.”

Call of Duty Game Pass

Considering the fact that Call of Duty has historically been the best selling game of the year every year since 2009 (with only a few exceptions) the decision to include the annual titles onto Game Pass day-one was always somewhat of a gamble – a gamble which appears to not be paying off.

2026 is said to be a big year for Call of Duty, with Infinity Ward reportedly developing Modern Warfare 4 alongside an engine refresh, making for what should be a big jump up in technology compared to the past half-a-dozen releases.

Assuming this to be the case, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft will choose to spin this shift as a positive for current subscribers. We will have to wait and see.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest claim? Would this be a big loss for Game Pass? How interested are you in a potential Modern Warfare 4? Let us know down below.

Call of Duty Could Be Removed from Game Pass, Reveals Insider

12 April 2026 at 09:00

An Xbox logo with 'Game Pass' text is next to a character wearing a skull mask and headset from the game Call of Duty.

Following Microsoft's expensive acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the biggest question mark was whether the latter's most popular product, Call of Duty, would join Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft eventually decided to add new installments starting with 2024's Black Ops 6, developed by Treyarch and Raven Software. Right away, it broke franchise and Game Pass records, but later it became clear it wasn't such a good decision for the franchise. Now, according to Windows Central's Jez Corden, Microsoft might even remove 2026's Call of Duty from Game Pass. Speaking in his latest podcast, Corden said: It'd be interesting to see if they […]

This streak looks to be continuing with Season 3, officially arriving today alongside tons of new maps; modes; weapons and more.

Officially going live later today, Black Ops 7 Season 3 is being split up in two halves as per usual (with the second half ‘Reloaded’ update arriving in roughly a month’s time. Even at launch however, Season 3 is set to introduce a great deal of substantive additions, including but not limited to:

Activision shuts down even more Call of Duty leakers / dataminers

13 March 2026 at 11:00

Following an extended period of continuous leaks regarding Call of Duty’s past, present and future, Activision finally put their foot down – with one of the most notable insiders confirming earlier this month that they would be ceasing operations. It appears as though this was just the start however, with known dataminer RealityUK now also stepping away permanently.

In response to the tweet published by COD leaker TheGhostofHope earlier this month revealing how they had been “legally demanded” by Activision to cease “disseminating confidential information related to Call of Duty/Activision,” known dataminer RealityUK revealed that they have suffered a similar fate, writing:

“I am too, ceasing all datamining and leaking from here on out, permanently. No go around this time. Completely serious, it's over. No leaking any Activision titles in any capacity.”

While not explicitly stated, it appears as though RealityUK was also contacted by Activision and told to stop leaking information related to Call of Duty.

Activision Dataminer

Back when TheGhostofHope first made the announcement, COD’s official page actually commented on the matter, stating at the time that “even when leaks are wrong, they still hurt the people building the game and mess with player expectations.”

Of course, Call of Duty has been home to leakers for years now, and so the sudden and relatively harsh nature of this 180 degree turn is interesting to note. Here’s to hoping that the higher-ups don’t extend the reach of their influence too much further however.

Notable Call of Duty insider will no longer share leaks following Activision intervention

4 March 2026 at 12:30

For the past year or so, one of the biggest leakers in the Call of Duty space has been TheGhostofHope, with the insider having revealed a ton of information regarding current and even future COD entries. In the wake of a recent report by the insider claiming that some major shake-ups may be happening internally, Activision have now “legally demanded that I stop leaking and disseminating confidential information related to Call of Duty.”

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, known Call of Duty leaker TheGhostofHope revealed that “Activision has legally demanded that I stop leaking and disseminating confidential information related to Call of Duty/Activision and I am complying with their demands. Still gonna stick around and chat about Official Call of Duty info and anything not related to leaks/confidential information. Cheers for these past few years.”

Interestingly, alongside this recent revelation, Call of Duty themselves commented on these latest events. In response to one tweet by COD YouTuber ‘TDAWG’ who asked “So if Call of Duty is shutting ghostofhope down…was he right about everything…?” the official Call of Duty account replied with:

“Nah. Even when leaks are wrong, they still hurt the people building the game and mess with player expectations.”

Whether TheGhostofHope was right or not, we will have to wait and see, but for better or for worse, it seems Activision is cracking down on leaks moving forward.

Blackout-inspired ‘Black Ops Royale’ officially arrives next week

3 March 2026 at 10:15

Black Ops 7: Season 2 Reloaded is set to be massive for Call of Duty, with the mid-Season update reintroducing the fan-favourite Blackout mode from BO4 – an alternate take on the Battle Royale formula. Ahead of the update’s arrival next week, Activision have shared everything you need to know about Season 2 Reloaded and its Black Ops Royale mode.

Taking to their blog, the team at Activision offered a deep-dive into the new Black Ops Royale mode. Inspired by Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode, this alternate take on the BR formula is set to launch on the 12th of March and offers a ton of changes compared to Warzone – including but not limited to:

  • No loadouts
  • No gulag
  • No buy stations
  • Wingsuits instead of parachutes
  • 5 attachment upgrade paths
  • New backpack menu
  • Lootable perks with no fixed slots
  • Returning equipment including grapple hook and sensor dart
  • Full omni-movement support
  • Cradle Breaches featuring zombies

All of this will of course be taking place on the Avalon map which has so far been used for BO7’s Endgame mode (albeit with some visual changes).

Full details on the new Black Ops Royale mode can be found HERE, but in essence it seems to be sticking surprisingly close to the original Blackout experience.

Over the years, sentiment surrounding Blackout has grown, with many claiming that its biggest issue was being tied to the premium Black Ops 4 – meaning finding matches over time became increasingly tough. With this new Black Ops Royale however being tied to Warzone, it will be interesting to see how the mode is received, especially compared to the somewhat stale Warzone. We won’t have to wait long to find out.

KitGuru says: Are you excited for Season 2 Reloaded? Did you enjoy the OG Blackout back in the day? How does it compare to Warzone? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Insider claims Call of Duty could see a massive shake-up including no more annual releases

24 February 2026 at 10:15

For pretty much its entire existence, Call of Duty has operated using a familiar model, with the FPS franchise seeing a brand new title released on an annual basis from one of the 3 core COD studios. While this has worked in the past, Black Ops 7 seems to have been a breaking point for some. According to known insiders, Microsoft is now considering a major shake-up, including a standalone Zombies game.

As reported by known Call of Duty leaker TheGhostofHope, an internal delay of the next-gen Xbox console from Microsoft has “hurt a lot of CODs marketing plans as they wanted Modern Warfare 4 to be a launch title and draw a lot of hype to compete with people's attention alongside GTA VI.”

According to Hope, this has led to “the idea of two Call Of Duty games launching with the next Xbox” being considered – namely “a traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and a standalone Zombies title presumably developed by Treyarch.”

Alongside this, Microsoft is reportedly wanting “Activision to be more agile and less attached to annualized releases in the future,” with one example of its failings being the lack of evolution in MW2’s DMZ extraction mode due to it being attached to an annual COD entry.

Of course, Microsoft and Xbox are in a weird spot at the moment, so these plans could be altered or changed at any point.

Still, considering just how rigidly the franchise has stuck to its annual releases up until now, it would be interesting to see what Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games could achieve if given enough time and freedom. Hopefully we find out.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this leak? Would you welcome a shift in strategy? Between a standalone DMZ and Zombies game, which would you prefer? Let us know down below.
