We knew that Slay the Spire 2 had a massive launch, if only based on the fact that it reached 574,638 concurrent players on Steam just three days after it launched, after it had already seemingly had a huge start when it hit well over 400K concurrent players and took a jab at Marathon. Not long after its arrival, a report from data firm Alinea Analytics spied that it had already sold an estimated 4.6M copies and generated an estimated $92M in revenue, and now, Alinea's latest newsletter report calls MegaCrit's long-awaited sequel the best-selling game on Steam for March […]

While 2025 will forever be known as a massive year for indie games between Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight Silksong, 2026 is already starting to be a strong year for smaller-scale titles with games like Slay the Spire 2 enjoying incredible success right at launch. That's according to video game industry data firm Alinea Analytics and analyst Rhys Elliot, whose latest newsletter points to Slay the Spire 2 reaching an estimated 4.6 million copies sold as of March 19, 2026, which, at $25 USD a pop, has brought in about $92 million in revenue for developer MegaCrit. Slay the Spire 2 surpasses Marathon with over 500K concurrent players on Steam

9 March 2026 at 11:00

While Marathon garnered a respectable number of players for its launch weekend, Bungie's big moment was actually usurped by an unlikely competitor – the early access version of Slay the Spire 2.

Slay the Spire 2 is stealing headlines this weekend thanks to its massive Steam Early Access launch. The new version of the deckbuilder places great focus on card variety and visual upgrades over the original, and it appears to be a huge hit already.

Despite being in an incomplete early access state, Slay the Spire 2 garnered over 573,000 peak concurrent players this weekend. It has also shot up to the #1 spot on the Steam Top Seller list.

There is no specific timeline in place for the Early Access period of Slay the Spire 2. The game will continue to receive updates and new content in the months ahead, alongside bug and stability fixes. When V1.0 is ready, we also expect to see Slay the Spire 2 on consoles like Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2.

Update 06/03/2026: Following the publication of this article, the co-founder of MegaCrit and one of the main developers behind Slay the Spire 2, Casey Yano, has further clarified that the sarcastic jab the studio took at Bungie's Marathon really was just a joke, and has apologized for it now seeming "a bit meaner than it was intended." "This seems a bit meaner than it was intended...To be fair I didn't think we'd actually pass Marathon in concurrent users." At least two of the developers on Marathon, UI designer Elliot Gray and Marathon's community manager, Cozmo, responded to the post with […]

Slay the Spire 2 finally hits early access next week

25 February 2026 at 12:54

It has been quite a while since Slay the Spire 2 was first announced but the wait is finally coming to an end. The game will begin its Early Access development phase soon, with an early version of the game becoming available on Steam next week.

Mega Crit has confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 will launch into Early Access on Steam on March 5th, accompanied by a new animated trailer highlighting the sequel's expanded scope and newly added four‑player online co‑op.

The original Slay the Spire became a widely loved indie hit thanks to its fusion of roguelike progression and deck-building mechanics, with each run through the game offering something fresh. Slay the Spire 2 builds on that foundation with a substantial list of additions, including new cards, characters, relics, potions, events, enemies, and alternate acts designed to keep you coming back for another run.

We do not yet know how long Slay the Spire 2 will remain in Early Access for, but we expect to see a number of feedback-driven content updates in the year ahead.
