Netflix is shutting down multiple game studios including Oxenfree’s ‘Night School’

14 August 2026 at 09:00

Netflix’s ambitions in the video games space remains somewhat confusing and influx, with the media giant continuously investing into various studios and IPs while at the same time cancelling games and shuttering teams. With regards to the latter, Netflix is now reportedly shutting down the award-winning indie studio Night School – known best for their work on the choice-based adventure title Oxenfree.

As reported by known industry insider Stephen Totilo (via GameFile), Netflix is officially closing two of its previously-owned studios: Night School and Moonloot.

Between the two, Night School is easily the more recognisable name, with the once-indie studio being known best for developing the award-winning Oxenfree. Under the ownership of Netflix, the team were able to produce a couple different titles: Oxenfree II as well as the mobile-exclusive horror ‘Unhinged’ – the latter of which was released just a couple months ago.

Moonloot Games on the other hand was established in 2022 with the hopes to become “a world-class game studio that delights and engages players like never before.”

Unfortunately, it seems both Night School and Moonloot Games’ journeys are set to end here. It will be interesting to see how Netflix themselves justify this decision once the announcement is made official.
