Souls-like Mortal Shell II officially launches next month

9 July 2026 at 15:00

Mortal Shell is one of the better known Souls-like titles produced in the wake of FromSoftware’s genre-creating series. Released back in 2020, the relatively-modest title proved to be a hit, selling over 1 million copies and warranting a sequel. Officially announced last Summer, Mortal Shell II has now gotten a full release date.

Publishing their β€˜official release date trailer’ the team at Cold Symmetry / Playstack confirmed that Mortal Shell II will be launching on the 10th of August 2026.

Serving as a standalone sequel, Mortal Shell II expands on the titular β€˜shell’ mechanic offering a unique way to shape your character and their abilities.

On a more general front, this sequel promises β€œunrestricted, adrenaline-charged combat, deeper weapon design with extensive upgrade options, and an emphasis on free exploration.”

Given that Mortal Shell marked the debut title from studio Cold Symmetry, the team made an admirable effort – especially after the release of Mortal Shell’s Enhanced Edition.

Still, this sequel presents a great opportunity for the team to show off all that they’ve learned over the past half a decade or so. Hopefully Mortal Shell II does not fade away in the sea of impending game releases.

Balatro publisher Playstack is being acquired by investment firm IMC

1 June 2026 at 12:00

While the penchant for larger corporations acquiring smaller video game studios / companies has fallen in recent years, as long as there is a successful product, there will be some parties who are interested in getting in on the action. Such is the case with VantageCo: a subsidiary of the investment firm IMC who is now proposing to acquire the publisher behind indie hit Balatro β€˜Playstack’.

As reported by the publication Gamedeveloper.com, Playstack’s owner TruFin recently announced that they had entered into a proposed sale of the publisher, letting go control of 84.5% of Playstack.

Said to be valued at $169 million in total, the publisher is set to be sold to VantageCO – a subsidiary of Integrated Media Company (IMC).

Balatro Playstack

For the uninitiated, IMC is an investment firm who has over the years acquired a ton of known properties, including Fandom; Screen Junkies; Fanatical and even GameSpot. The company also owns a number of other adjacent brands in the football and ecommerce sector.

Playstack of course is known best for publishing the highly popular poker-esque rogue-like Balatro, but they have also released a bunch of other indies including Void Breaker; Abiotic Factor; Raccoin; and the upcoming Mortal Shell II.

According to the released timetable, TruFin expects the sale to be completed come the 10th of June, assuming shareholders accept the deal. Either way, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Playstack in the wake of this impending sale.
