Sony still hasn’t decided when the PlayStation 6 will launch

18 August 2026 at 08:30

With the PlayStation 5 soon set to enter its 7th year on the market, fans and investors alike have started to wonder when Sony’s next-generation PS6 will make its official showing. While Sony has not shied away from confirming the existence of a next-gen console, it would seem that current component shortages and price hikes has them holding back on their plans.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal (paywalled), Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki spoke on the position of PlayStation – particularly when it comes to the ongoing RAM crisis – stating: “Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape.”

In discussing the current environment’s impact on the inevitable PlayStation 6, Totoki claimed that Sony (as written by WSJ) “still hasn't fixed a date for PS6's launch.”

For a while, many had believed that the company was gearing up for a 2027 launch of the PlayStation 6, landing neatly in-line with the rest of Sony’s past console generations. With the continued rise in component costs as a result of AI data centres, many believed that the PS6 would be pushed back.

Though this has not been confirmed, it is safe to assume that Sony is waiting for the market to stabilise a bit before making their official PlayStation 6 announcement.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Totoki’s statement? Are you happy to wait a couple more years for the PS6, even if the hardware is a bit outdated by then?

At this point, it's not even certain if the new consoles will indeed launch by the end of 2027, as Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki made some interesting, and somewhat foreboding, statements not only about the PlayStation 6, but also about how the company's business has to change in these trying times to survive.
