Unlike some of the publisher’s franchises, Capcom have been rather sparing when it comes to releasing new entries in the popular Devil May Cry series. That’s not for lack of demand however, with the latest title – Devil May Cry 5 – continuing to sell like hotcakes; recently achieving its best 12 months of sales ever despite being 7 years old.

As reported by the Japanese publication GameSpark (and translated by VGC), Capcom recently updated their ‘Consumer Business Sales Volume’ chart offering a breakdown of the publisher's various game sales on a year-by-year basis.

In an interesting revelation, Devil May Cry 5 (the latest entry in the series) actually managed to have its best year ever sales-wise, despite launching all the way back in 2019.

With a total of 2.7 million copies sold over the past 12 months (ending March 31st), DMC 5 even managed to outdo its initial launch-year high of 2.1 million copies sold.

All-in-all, Devil May Cry 5 has now managed to sell just shy of 13 million copies – representing more than a 3rd of the entire franchise’s lifetime sales.

Of course, there are a number of factors to consider. Firstly, the game has seen plenty of discounts over the years, including a recent all-time low of just £3.74. Additionally, various other DMC-related media have been released in the years since its arrival, including the likes of the Devil May Cry animated series as well as the mobile-focused spin-off DMC: Peak of Combat – though the impact of the latter was likely minimal.

Either way, as the years go on, Devil May Cry seems to only be growing in popularity. Hopefully Capcom has a DMC 6 currently cooking in the developmental oven. It will be interesting to see whether the upcoming Switch 2 port manages to push the title past 15 million.

Capcom has found a great deal of success in the remake space, particularly when it comes to their Resident Evil franchise. With the publisher having already revived a majority of past mainline RE titles, it seems Capcom is planning to expand its remaking efforts to other franchises – with a Devil May Cry remake rumoured to currently be in development.

As reported by ‘Stiviwonder’ (though should of course be taken with a major pinch of salt) a remake of Devil May Cry is said to be in the works.

As of now, no further details were offered. That said, Stiviwonder has shared other leaks in the past (some of which were corroborated by known Capcom insiders), lending a little bit of credence to the rumours.

While far from Capcom’s biggest franchise, the Devil May Cry series has grown significantly in recent years, with the most recent mainline entry ‘DMC 5’ selling over 10 million copies and helping to push the franchise past the 30 million mark.

Combine this with comments from Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya claiming that he would “love to” remake DMC1 and it seems like such a project could indeed be a reality.

Of course, we will have to wait patiently to find out whether there is any merit to the rumour. Still, with DMC 5 having been released over 7 years ago at this point, it is high time that we got a new entry in one form or another.

While the Devil May Cry series is as popular as it has ever been, the most recent entry in the spectacle fighter launched over 7 years ago at this point with no new mainline title in sight. That said, it appears as though DMC 5 is set to receive another re-release, with Devil May Cry 5: Hunter Edition having recently been listed for Switch 2 by the Taiwanese Game Rating Board.

As discovered by Reddit user ‘NintendoGalaxy’ the Taiwanese Game Rating Board recently published a listing for Devil May Cry 5: Hunter Edition. Though little else is known beyond this currently, the rating lists a single platform for this upcoming release – seemingly coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.

This makes some sense, as while DMC 5 was never ported over to the OG Switch, the game did originally launch on 8th-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) and so Nintendo’s latest handheld should have more than enough horsepower to run the game.

That said, the specifics surrounding the exact details of this Hunter Edition remain unknown. For context, DMC 5 has already been re-released once, with the Special Edition landing on current-gen consoles back in 2020, introducing a new playable character, ray-tracing support and more.

How much of the Special Edition content will be included in this upcoming Hunter Edition? We will have to wait and see, but at the very least, it is encouraging to see that Capcom is doing something with the Devil May Cry franchise (outside of their animated projects). Hopefully this marks the beginning of the long-awaited return of DMC.
