Steam Machine owners can now 3D print a custom e-ink faceplate using Valve’s GitHub files

Valve has officially released the complete project files and assembly documentation for its experimental Steam Machine e-ink faceplate. The open-source repository allows users with 3D printers to build, program, and install the customisable accessory from scratch.

The release (via Brad Lynch) follows the launch of the Steam Machine, which features a modular front panel design. While Valve originally showcased the e-ink faceplate last year as an experimental concept without a confirmed commercial release date, the company has now open-sourced the entire design. The GitLab repository contains 3D-printable CAD files for the chassis, a full list of required hardware components, and assembly guides in both PDF and video formats.

Building the accessory requires flashing firmware onto a supported ESP32 microcontroller board, as outlined in the documentation. For connectivity, the faceplate pairs with the console over Bluetooth to display real-time hardware statistics or custom images. Valve plans to release an official configuration app on Steam in the future. Until that utility arrives, users must compile their own AppImage by following the provided software guides.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to just buy the faceplate, brands likeΒ JSaux are planning to offer their own E-Ink based faceplates.

Valve makes Steam Controller and Puck CAD files available for modders

Valve has released official 3D CAD files for the Steam Controller and Puck to support the hardware modding community. The release of these files follows a launch in which the new controller sold out shortly after it became available.

The technical package is available under a Creative Commons license and includes STP and STL models for the external shell topology of both the controller and the Puck. Valve also provided engineering drawings detailing critical features and β€œkeep out” zones to assist designers in maintaining signal strength and functional clearances for third-party accessories.

The CAD files are intended to facilitate the creation of custom grips, 3D-printed stands, and other physical modifications. While the files cover the hardware's surface topology, they do not include internal component designs. Modders can access the repository via GitLab to begin developing accessories for the new platform.

Keychron releases 3D printing files for its keyboards and mice

Keychron has published a GitHub repository containing CAD files for its hardware designs, effectively making its keyboards and mice open-source hardware. The collection provides the community with access to 3D models and 2D plate files, enabling users to produce or modify enclosures and internal components using 3D printing or CNC milling.

First reported by Noteboocheck, Keychron has published a GitHub repository with most of its hardware designs. These repositories include STEP and DXF files, which are compatible with CAD software such as FreeCAD, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD. The available designs cover a comprehensive range of components, including keycaps, keyboard housings, buttons, plates, mouse shells, and stabiliser housings.

Access to the files is managed through the Keychron website. Users select a specific hardware model from a menu and complete a checkout process to receive the download links. Keychron states that while these files are publicly accessible, the license prohibits their use for commercial purposes.

Although there are already plenty of model files available for download, some newer releases, like the Q Ultra series, are not. However, it seems Keychron is still adding more models, so we might see the missing ones at a later date.
