85% of PS5 game sales are digital as console nears 100 million units
With each generation weβve seen console players continue to adopt digital game purchases at an increasing rate. While not quite at the level of PC gaming yet, Sonyβs PS5 has managed to shift the pendulum to near-complete digital dominance; with just 15% of recent sales being attributed to physical media.
As part of the companyβs most recent fiscal earnings report, Sony revealed β collated by the publication PushSquare β that 85% of all game sales during the past Quarter (ending on the 31st of March 2026) were digital.
Of course, the PS5 represents the first home console from Sony to offer an SKU without a disc-drive, meaning a solid percentage of the total user base are all-in on digital gaming. Even so, 85% is a massive percentage and suggests that the PlayStation 6 will further embrace the digital space come its inevitable arrival.
In terms of overall console sales, the PS5 is continuing to truck along, with Sony confirming that it has pushed past 93.7 million units. This puts the console comfortably as the 8th best-selling system of all time β currently sitting behind the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million); the OG PlayStation (102.49 million) and Sonyβs last-gen PS4 (currently at 117.2 million).
Given that the PS5 has continued to receive price increases more than half a decade on from its initial launch, it will be interesting to see whether Sonyβs latest and greatest manages to surpass the PS4 when all is said and done.
