Battlefield 6 adds Top Gun crossover, Wake Island, free trial

Battlefield 6 got its biggest update yet, and EA is throwing everything at it. Game Update 1.4.2.0 landed today, and the headline act is a full Top Gun crossover built with Paramount Games Studio, complete with Rooster, Bob, and Warlock voiced by their actual film actors. That’s a proper crossover, not just a reskinned jet with a licensed name slapped on.

A free week to try it all

To back it up, Battlefield 6 is free to play from today until August 25 across every platform. New players get six modes across four maps, including the returning Wake Island and the expanded Tsuru Reef. Given the game’s been bleeding players despite being 2025’s best-seller, this trial reads less like generosity and more like a rescue mission.

The Top Gun content itself brings CJTF Helix as a new squad, a stack of themed cosmetics earned through a limited Ace Medals currency, and two new two-seat jets, the F/A-81F Super Spectre and F-74A Seacat. Those planes headline Top Gun: Carrier Strike, a reworked Carrier Assault mode mixing infantry, naval, and air combat around attacking and defending carriers. REDSEC gets its own jets-only spin with Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep.

Wake Island’s comeback is the bit longtime fans have actually been asking for, bringing back coastal battles and carrier-based combat on one of the series’ most recognisable maps. Tsuru Reef, already the game’s biggest map, now has playable aircraft carriers woven into Conquest and Escalation too.

There’s also a new long-range sniper, the Interdictor, unlockable through the Battle Pass, plus jet handling tweaks, underwater animation fixes, weapon balancing across the EF88 and VSSM, and Custom Lobbies in Portal for competitive players.

It’s a lot in one drop. Whether it’s enough to pull Battlefield 6 lapsed players back in is another question, but EA clearly isn’t holding anything back trying.

At Summer Game Fest 2026, newly established publishing label Paramount Games Studio unveiled TMNT: The Last Ronin, a project in development at PlatinumGames (NieR: Automata, Bayonetta 3, Ninja Gaiden 4). As some of you may recall, we already got such an announcement in March 2023, but back then, the project was in development at Black Forest Games (Giana Sisters, Destroy All Humans!). Its development was stopped before the merger of Skydance and Paramount, and later, it was reassigned to the Japanese studio. The gameplay will undoubtedly be very different, but one thing seems to have stayed the same: the mature, […]
