Microsoft has announced a new compact computer designed specifically for artificial intelligence development. Called the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, the new machine was revealed during the Microsoft Build 2026 conference and is aimed at developers building and testing AI applications locally.

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is powered by Nvidia’s new RTX Spark chip. This advanced processor combines up to 20 Arm-based CPU cores with a powerful Nvidia Blackwell graphics processor featuring 6,144 CUDA cores. The system runs on Windows 11 Pro and is built to handle demanding AI workloads without relying heavily on cloud services.

Microsoft says the compact desktop delivers up to 1 petaflop of AI computing performance, allowing developers to run large AI models directly on their own hardware. The company believes this approach can reduce dependence on cloud resources and make AI development faster and more efficient.

To support these workloads, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box comes with 128GB of memory. According to Microsoft, this is enough to run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters and handle context windows of up to one million tokens locally. The hardware can also be used to fine-tune models that would normally require powerful cloud-based GPU servers.

Despite its compact size, the new device offers a good range of connectivity options. Users will find two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, HDMI output, Ethernet connectivity, and a standard headphone jack. The small form factor makes it easy to place on a desk while still providing the performance needed for AI development tasks.

Microsoft has also included several software tools out of the box. The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box ships with Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2) already configured to work with the GPU. Popular development tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot, Git, Python, and Node.js are also pre-installed, helping developers get started quickly.

The design of the device is noticeably different from a traditional desktop PC. Its clean and modern appearance gives it a premium look while keeping the focus on professional development work.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box will launch in the United States before the end of 2026. The company has not yet announced pricing details or availability for other regions. Interested users can sign up through Microsoft’s official website to receive updates ahead of the release.
