QNAP TVS-hx77AX Series Brings Fast Ryzen 7000 Performance to Enterprise NAS

QNAP has introduced a new enterprise NAS lineup designed to handle demanding workloads such as AI training, virtualization, and professional video production. The new QNAP TVS-hx77AX series combines AMD Ryzen 7000 processors, DDR5 memory, fast networking, and ZFS-based storage protection in a desktop-sized NAS platform.

The new family includes three models: the 16-bay TVS-h1677AX, 12-bay TVS-h1277AX, and 8-bay TVS-h877AX. All three systems run QuTS hero and are built for businesses that need high storage capacity along with strong performance.

AMD Ryzen 7000 and DDR5 Power the New NAS

At the heart of the TVS-hx77AX series are AMD Ryzen 7000 processors based on the Zen 4 architecture. QNAP says the newer platform provides improved processing performance for workloads that can put heavy pressure on a NAS.

The systems can also support up to 192 GB of DDR5 memory, with ECC memory available as an option. This gives the machines enough memory headroom for demanding tasks such as running several virtual machines, containers, and data-heavy applications at the same time.

For businesses using their NAS for more than simple file storage, the extra CPU and memory capacity could make a noticeable difference.

Faster Networking for AI and Video Workloads

One of the biggest features of the TVS-hx77AX lineup is its support for NFS over RDMA.

The NAS systems come with dual 10GbE ports and dual 2.5GbE ports. QNAP also provides three PCIe Gen 4 expansion slots, allowing users to add faster networking hardware such as a 25GbE SmartNIC.

NFS over RDMA is designed to reduce network transfer overhead by allowing data to move more directly between memory systems. This can help lower latency when large amounts of data need to move between storage and high-performance systems.

That makes the feature particularly useful for AI model training, virtualization, and 4K video editing, where slow storage connections can become a major bottleneck.

SSD and HDD Storage Work Together

The QNAP TVS-hx77AX series uses a hybrid storage approach, combining high-capacity hard drives with faster NVMe storage.

Dedicated U.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe SSD slots can be used for workloads that need faster random access. At the same time, users can install larger HDDs when capacity is the priority.

QNAP also supports Qtier with QuTS hero. The technology can automatically move frequently used data toward faster storage while keeping less-used files on higher-capacity drives. This approach is intended to provide a balance between performance and storage cost.

QuTS Hero Adds ZFS Data Protection

The TVS-hx77AX family runs QNAP’s QuTS hero operating system, which is based on the ZFS file system.

ZFS brings features aimed at protecting stored data, including self-healing capabilities and snapshots. QNAP also highlights immutable snapshots as an important tool for helping businesses protect their data from ransomware attacks.

For companies storing important business files, virtual machines, or production data, these features can provide an additional layer of protection against data loss.

AI Search Turns the NAS Into a Knowledge Base

QNAP is also adding AI-focused software features to the new series.

Its Qsirch search engine can work with Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG, and connect with cloud-based or on-premises large language models. This allows users to search NAS data using natural language instead of relying only on traditional file searches.

For organizations with large amounts of stored information, the goal is to make finding documents and other data faster and easier.

GPU Support for More Demanding Applications

The three PCIe Gen 4 slots also give businesses room to expand the systems for specialized workloads.

QNAP says compatible discrete graphics cards with power requirements of up to 200 W can be installed. GPU passthrough can then allow supported virtual machines to access the graphics hardware.

This can be useful for applications involving AI processing, graphics workloads, and other tasks that benefit from dedicated GPU acceleration.

High Availability and a Five Year Warranty

For businesses where storage downtime can cause serious problems, the TVS-hx77AX series supports QNAP’s High Availability Manager.

Two compatible NAS units can be configured as a high-availability cluster, allowing operations to continue if one system experiences a hardware failure.

QNAP is also offering a five-year standard warranty with the new series, adding long-term coverage for organizations deploying the systems in business environments.

With Ryzen 7000 processors, DDR5 memory, NVMe support, 25GbE expansion, NFS over RDMA, and ZFS-based data protection, the QNAP TVS-hx77AX series is aimed at businesses that need considerably more than a basic network storage system.

The combination of multiple drive bays and high-speed expansion options also gives organizations flexibility to build systems around their specific storage and performance requirements. With support for AI workloads, virtualization, and professional media production, QNAP is positioning the new lineup as a compact alternative for demanding enterprise storage environments.
