While the company is far from the gaming behemoth which it once was back during the arcade and early console days, Atari has slowly but surely been finding its way back into the video games space. After acquiring the likes of Digital Eclipse and Thunderful Group, Atari has now announced that they are purchasing Hipster Whale – the studio behind the mobile hits Crossy Road and Pac-Man 256.

Making the announcement via a press release, Atari revealed that they have “entered into an agreement to acquire Hipster Whale […] the multi-award-winning studio behind Crossy Road and PAC-MAN 256.” 

While this seems to follow in similar footsteps to SEGA who purchased Angry Birds studio Rovio back in 2023, the acquisition of Hipster Whale does make some sense.

Crossy Road, for the uninitiated, is/was a popular free-to-play mobile game which was pretty much the old school classic ‘Frogger’ but reinterpreted for a new audience. Of course, Pac-Man 256 is Pac-Man – one of the biggest arcade franchises in history.

Considering that Atari is trying to go back to its roots, having a studio such as Hipster Whale join them does allow for plenty of possibilities; from Pong to Asteroids, Breakout and others. Full details on the acquisition can be found HERE.
