SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung spoke to reporters on Aug 27 (local time) after the groundbreaking ceremony for the company's advanced packaging plant for AI memory in West Lafayette, Indiana. The event was held at Purdue University's Holloway Gymnasium. Asked how long the memory shortage would last, he said:

Nobody knows exactly how long the crunch lasts, but he sees no clear signs of a downturn, and SK hynix expects the shortage to run through the end of 2030. He thinks the next downturn will look nothing like the cycles the industry has been through over the past several decades.

His reasoning: AI memory is moving away from being 100% standardized product toward partially and fully customized product. Because supply is being built to specific customer demand, an oversupply glut should be far less severe than in past cycles.

Even if a downturn does arrive, he expects demand to soften moderately or simply flatten to planned levels rather than fall off a cliff. Hence, no concern about the post-2030 picture.

On further US fab investment: he said SK hynix is open to building anywhere that offers enough resources. Power, capital, and subsidies.
