Software, SMART, Drivers, DirectStorage

SSDs don’t stop with hardware and firmware, they also rely on software and software monitoring. The health status of the drive is often measured via S.M.A.R.T. values that keep track of various characteristics of the drive, including usage. NVMe drivers are optional for Windows and Microsoft’s default drivers work just fine. Microsoft’s DirectStorage API will open up new avenues for SSDs by allowing them to reach their potential.
