Metadata, Mapping, and the Flash Translation Layer

SSDs rely on metadata, or data about data, to track various characteristics of the flash. This is particularly useful for wear management and maintenance. Actual translation between physical and logical addresses for the data is known as mapping, crucial because SSDs are abstracted from the host’s file system. This is managed by the SSD’s Flash Translation Layer (FTL).
