Pangram’s Max Spero on why AI detection is harder than ‘Real or Fake’

The internet has a trust problem, and it’s not just because social media feeds are filling up with AI slop. AI-generated text and images are now making their way into job applications, product reviews, and even insurance claims, leaving platforms and users alike scrambling to figure out what’s real.  A handful of startups have cropped up in the past couple of […]

Souls-like Mortal Shell II officially launches next month

Mortal Shell is one of the better known Souls-like titles produced in the wake of FromSoftware’s genre-creating series. Released back in 2020, the relatively-modest title proved to be a hit, selling over 1 million copies and warranting a sequel. Officially announced last Summer, Mortal Shell II has now gotten a full release date.

Publishing their ‘official release date trailer’ the team at Cold Symmetry / Playstack confirmed that Mortal Shell II will be launching on the 10th of August 2026.

Serving as a standalone sequel, Mortal Shell II expands on the titular ‘shell’ mechanic offering a unique way to shape your character and their abilities.

On a more general front, this sequel promises “unrestricted, adrenaline-charged combat, deeper weapon design with extensive upgrade options, and an emphasis on free exploration.”

Given that Mortal Shell marked the debut title from studio Cold Symmetry, the team made an admirable effort – especially after the release of Mortal Shell’s Enhanced Edition.

Still, this sequel presents a great opportunity for the team to show off all that they’ve learned over the past half a decade or so. Hopefully Mortal Shell II does not fade away in the sea of impending game releases.

Balatro publisher Playstack is being acquired by investment firm IMC

While the penchant for larger corporations acquiring smaller video game studios / companies has fallen in recent years, as long as there is a successful product, there will be some parties who are interested in getting in on the action. Such is the case with VantageCo: a subsidiary of the investment firm IMC who is now proposing to acquire the publisher behind indie hit Balatro ‘Playstack’.

As reported by the publication Gamedeveloper.com, Playstack’s owner TruFin recently announced that they had entered into a proposed sale of the publisher, letting go control of 84.5% of Playstack.

Said to be valued at $169 million in total, the publisher is set to be sold to VantageCO – a subsidiary of Integrated Media Company (IMC).

Balatro Playstack

For the uninitiated, IMC is an investment firm who has over the years acquired a ton of known properties, including Fandom; Screen Junkies; Fanatical and even GameSpot. The company also owns a number of other adjacent brands in the football and ecommerce sector.

Playstack of course is known best for publishing the highly popular poker-esque rogue-like Balatro, but they have also released a bunch of other indies including Void Breaker; Abiotic Factor; Raccoin; and the upcoming Mortal Shell II.

According to the released timetable, TruFin expects the sale to be completed come the 10th of June, assuming shareholders accept the deal. Either way, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Playstack in the wake of this impending sale.

New indie hit reaches 1 million sales on Steam

Tenstack has announced that its cooperative title, Gamble With Your Friends, has sold one million copies within its first week of release. The game, which launched on May 1st, surpassed the 500,000-unit mark by May 4th, then reached the one-million milestone.

The title features a cooperative premise in which up to six players attempt to earn virtual currency within a five-minute window to repay an in-game loan shark. Gameplay involves various virtual casino activities, including blackjack and roulette. The game utilises virtual currency only, with no real-world money involved in the gameplay mechanics.

According to a developer statement on Reddit, the game's commercial performance is attributed to streamer engagement and effective marketing. The project was developed in under 9 months and underwent a full reboot during development to focus on the gambling-themed cooperative loop.

The sales figures place the title's opening-week performance on par with recent major releases, such as Capcom's Pragmata. Something that might have contributed to the game's success is that Tenstack priced the title at £6.69/€7.79/$7.99 on Steam.

Micron reportedly developing vertically stacked GDDR to rival HBM in AI Workloads

Micron is reportedly working on a major architectural shift in graphics memory that could change how mid-range GPUs and AI accelerators are designed. According to recent reports, the company is developing vertically stacked GDDR, a new memory category intended to sit between the “standard” discrete GDDR we see on consumer graphics cards and the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) used in data centre applications.

According to ITHome, the core philosophy behind stacked GDDR is to offer HBM performance without its price tag. By stacking memory dies vertically within a single package, Micron can significantly increase VRAM density and bandwidth per pin. This approach aims to bypass the need for silicon interposers, the complex and costly bridges required to connect HBM to a GPU.

While AI training requires the absolute maximum throughput provided by HBM, AI inference is often hungrier for raw capacity and cost-efficiency. Stacked GDDR could potentially allow a mid-range AI accelerator or a professional workstation card to carry massive amounts of VRAM without the astronomical costs currently associated with HBM-equipped hardware.

Micron is reportedly aiming to deliver the first functional prototypes in 2027. If the roadmap holds, this technology could become a cornerstone for the next generation of “AI PCs” and mid-tier enterprise hardware.

KitGuru says: Do you think stacked GDDR will become a new standard?
