PlayStation 6 Bill of Materials Is Now Very Close to the Dreaded $1,000 Line, But a Delay Still Isn’t Likely

A PlayStation 6 console on a pedestal with glowing blue accents is featured beside the 'PS6 PlayStation.6' logo.

Almost exactly three months ago, renowned AMD leaker Kepler_L2 claimed that Sony's current BoM (bill of materials) for the upcoming PlayStation 6 console was around $760, thus floating the possibility that the console could be priced at $699 with an initial subsidy from the Japanese corporation. Fellow leaker Moore's Law Is Dead reported a very similar BoM ($743) just days later. However, the component crisis is worsening almost weekly. We've seen that Valve was forced to launch its Steam Machine at $1049, about $300 more than the price it originally targeted, and Microsoft also had to substantially increase the pricing […]

Next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles may be far more expensive than expected

Valve’s new Steam Machine launched this month with a $1050 price tag, a figure that initially drew criticism but may not seem so insane by the time next-gen consoles roll out. Analysts now suggest that this pricing may be an early indication of where the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles are heading, as rising component costs continue to impact the hardware market.

As highlighted in VGC’s report, analysts from across the industry, including commentary originally published by GI.biz, warn that rising DRAM and NAND flash costs could push next‑generation consoles over the $1000 mark. Kantan Games CEO Dr. Serkan Toto described $1000 as the new “floor” for high‑end hardware built around modern memory and storage requirements.

Steam Machine’s pricing is being used as a reference point. As previously reported here at KitGuru, Valve struggled to secure “any components at any price” during development, contributing to the system’s unexpectedly high cost. With memory and SSD prices still climbing, analysts believe console makers will encounter similar pressures when designing their next‑gen systems.

Historically, consoles have been sold at a small loss, with platform holders recouping that money through first-party software sales and up to a 30% cut of third-party software sales. However, the market has shifted toward free‑to‑play and live‑service titles, reducing the certainty that hardware losses can be recovered through traditional game purchases. This makes aggressive hardware subsidisation less likely than in previous generations.

Right now, Microsoft has confirmed that it is working on Project Helix, the codename for the next Xbox. Sony is also currently working on the PlayStation 6, but we have no idea yet when either console will release. Prior reports suggested the PS6 could be delayed beyond 2028 due to component costs, but with Microsoft seems eager to move on from the Series X/S generation and is reportedly planning to launch sooner, perhaps as early as 2027.

KitGuru Says: If current component trends continue, next‑gen consoles may be far more expensive than players expect.

Analysts are Surprised the Steam Machine’s Price isn’t Higher, but this also means “North of $1K is the Floor” for Next-Gen Console Pricing

After months of speculation, Valve finally revealed the price of the Steam Machine yesterday, with the base barrier to owning your own GabeCube listed at $1,049 USD. You could go up to $1,428 USD for the version with all of the bells and whistles, but getting your foot in the door will cost over a grand to start. In a new report from GamesIndustry.Biz, the reaction to that price from senior video game industry analysts is a general sense of surprise that it's not worse and disappointment that it's as high as it is. But what it means for next-generation […]

Insider claims Naughty Dog is working on new Uncharted and TLOU games

Since the launch of the PS5 generation, Naughty Dog has been in an interesting spot. With their previous live-service The Last of Us plans being ultimately cancelled, the studio has so far yet to release an original game this console generation. That said, it appears as though the team are hard at work right now on multiple different projects, with insiders claiming that alongside the previously-announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog is also working on new entries in both the Uncharted and Last of Us franchises.

A little over a year ago, known industry insider DanielRPK claimed that alongside development on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog were also working on a second mysterious project.

Since then, the studio itself confirmed as much, though very few additional details were shared. Now, in the wake of a recent post by Naughty Dog creative Director Shaun Escayg which seemed to show off research for what could be a new Uncharted title, DanielRPK has returned with new revelations.

Corroborating claims made by the insider ‘Alir’ it appears as though alongside the aforementioned mystery second project, a 3rd title is also in the works.

Naughty Dog Uncharted

Though this should of course be taken with a pinch of salt, according to Alir the next title from Naughty Dog following Intergalactic will be a new Uncharted game. Then, at some point in the presumably distant future, this will be followed up by The Last of us Part III.

While TLOU Part II did offer a somewhat satisfying conclusion to the story of Joel and Ellie, there is certainly plenty of juice left in the tank to continue the narrative if Naughty Dog chooses to.

As mentioned however, Naughty Dog’s release schedule for this generation has been pretty barren, and so even assuming these leaks to be true, Intergalactic could still very well be the only new game we see from the team during this current console generation.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this leaked release schedule? Would you welcome a 3rd Last of Us eventually, or do you want to see Naughty Dog move away from the franchise? Let us know down below.

The $1,000 PlayStation 6: Why Michael Pachter Predicts a ‘Smaller’ Gaming Future Saved by Game Streaming

A PlayStation 6 console with a sleek design and blue LED accents is displayed next to the 'PS6 PlayStation.6' logo.

The PlayStation 6 has yet to be officially announced, but the current price hikes for components like RAM and SSDs are making it challenging to predict how much the system will cost when it launches in 2027 or 2028. A "reasonable" price shouldn't be expected, according to known Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, as the days of $500 consoles are likely over. However, an inevitably smaller gaming future could be saved by game streaming. "The console manufacturers can afford to bid up the price of RAM... but the console price will stay the same [or go up] and everybody’s happy," Pachter […]

PS6 Likely to Use 1TB SSD with No Disc Drive; Game Size Could Be Reduced with Neural Texture Compression

A concept image of the 'PS6' console with the PlayStation logo features sleek, futuristic design elements with blue LED lighting.

AMD leaker Kepler_L2 has provided more info on the likely base spec of Sony's PlayStation 6 (PS6) console. The insider has been one of the most prolific sources of information on both the PS6 and its main competitor, Microsoft's next Xbox console codenamed Project Helix, alongside content creator Moore's Law Is Dead. Both consoles will be powered by AMD's RDNA 5 and Zen 6 architectures, after all, and Kepler_L2 has a historically proven track record for AMD leaks. A few days ago, the leaker shared on the NeoGAF board that the bill of materials, essentially the list of how much […]

Xbox’s Project Helix, Sony’s PS6, and the PlayStation Handheld Still Targeting a Holiday 2027 Release – Rumour

A split image shows a console labeled 'PS6 PlayStation.6' on the left and a logo with the text 'PROJECT HELIX' on the right.

Today's slew of GDC 2026 presentations included a surprisingly interesting keynote talk from Jason Ronald, vice president at Xbox, providing some insight into the next generation of Xbox hardware with Project Helix. Included in that was the confirmation that the alpha versions of Project Helix's development kits won't be going out to developers until 2027, which sparked plenty of concern about the final release dates for the next generation of hardware. If game developers won't go hands-on with Project Helix until next year, what's the earliest players will get their chance? 2028? 2030? Well, according to known AMD leaker Kepler_L2, […]
