Following a regional test, Rovioβs Sonic Blitz is being discontinued
Back in 2023, amongst the many different mergers and acquisitions seen throughout the video games industry, SEGA announced that it had purchased the studio behind the mobile classic Angry Birds βRovioβ. Positioned as a way to get the publisher deeper into the mobile gaming space, this strategy does not seem to be paying off, with the TCG Sonic Blitz being discontinued ahead of its expected global release.
Back during the Summer of 2025, SEGA announced that it was developing a Sonic-themed digital trading card game called Sonic Blitz.
Seemingly inspired by the likes of Marvel Snap, the game was said to be drawing βon the rich roster of characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe to create a diverse pool of cards that players can collect, upgrade, and assemble into strategic decks to take on opponents in fast-paced one-on-one battles that unfold in a matter of minutes.β
Initially, Sonic Blitz saw a limited release, being available in regions such as the Philippines β with SEGA claiming at the time that βthe Sonic Blitz developers will be actively looking into the gameβs metrics and performance to determine its potential for a future global launch.β
In a somewhat unexpected move, SEGA has indeed opted not to go ahead with its global launch, as the team have now taken to their official Discord server to write:
βAfter careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue development of Sonic Blitz. This decision is part of broader changes at our studio, and it means that the game will not move forward beyond the soft-launch phase.β
Unfortunately, those who did enjoy the game wonβt have much time left to play it, with Sonic Blitz officially being inaccessible from the 24th of August; at which point the teamβs social pages will also be closed down.
So far, SEGAβs investment in Rovio has yielded few successes. Hopefully the studio is able to find a comfortable spot within SEGAβs wider structure. The full statement from the Sonic Blitz team can be found HERE.
