Despite Starfield's arrival on PS5 landing directly in the middle of the pack when it comes to sales numbers compared to other recent ports of Xbox-published games to PlayStation, its sales were enough to bring the game back to the top of the United States sales charts. Its weekly sales charts, that is. Circana executive director and video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella reported that for the week ending on April 11, 2026, which was the week during which Starfield arrived on PS5, it was the best-selling game in the US for the weekly sales charts. Not only did the […]
Following a pretty lengthy bout of silence, Bethesda Game Studios finally reappeared with a big update for Starfield. Officially available now, the long-awaited Free Lanes update introduces a surprising amount of welcome additions alongside the expected suite of bug fixes, adjustments, QoL improvements and much more.
Taking to their blog to detail the full patch notes, Starfield’s “biggest free update yet” Free Lanes has officially landed alongside the paid Terran Armada DLC. As mentioned, the full list of changes and additions is pretty extensive, but some of the most notable include:
‘Cruise Mode’ allowing you to “travel in open space or to POI locations between planets inside a star system”
Weapon and armour customisation through X-Tech crafting
Additional quality tiers to weapons and suits
Rank 4 Legendary effects for weapons and suits
New upgrade modules
Buildable ship optimisation terminal
Ship Equipment schematics
New Legendary enemy modifiers
It continues:
New Game+ refinements
New ‘Moon Jumper’ vehicle
New ship camera option
New dungeons, space encounters, and points of interest throughout the game
POIs are now distributed more evenly
Ship building UI improvements
Colony Wars Action Heroes collectibles
Streamlined Starborn power upgrades
Of course, alongside these additions, the Free Lanes also coincides with the release of the Terran Armada DLC, adding a new story quest; companion; enemy incursions; ship parts and more.
KitGuru says: What do you think of this update? Does it bring Starfield closer to what was promised? Is the paid DLC worth it? Let us know your thoughts down below.
Bethesda Game Studios has revealed the specifications of Starfield's imminent PlayStation 5 release. Owners of the PS5 Pro hardware will be able to choose from two modes: Both modes integrate PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler. Bethesda didn't clarify whether it's the first or newly released iteration of the upscaler, but it doesn't matter that much, as there is a system toggle that PS5 Pro users can enable to upgrade PSSR-supported games like Starfield to the latest version of the algorithm. All PlayStation 5 consoles, including the base model, support SSD optimization, Trophies, and the full suite of […]
The Starfield cat is out of the bag, revealing everything that Bethesda Game Studios is planning to launch on April 7: the long-awaited PlayStation 5 version, a new free update called Free Lanes and labeled as the game's biggest yet, and a new small-scale story-driven premium DLC, Terran Armada. Wccftech attended a press remote presentation in which Lead Creative Producer Timothy Lamb discussed all these topics at length. He also answered the inevitable question on whether this was, effectively, "Starfield 2.0", by dismissing the notion and all that it would entail. At the same time, Lamb believes this is indeed […]
Bethesda has announced plans to bring Starfield to PS5 in early April, but there is actually good news for fans on all platforms. On the same date as the PS5 release, a massive free update will be rolling out to all platforms, adding highly-requested features to the game. On top of that, a new story DLC titled Terran Armada is also dropping.
Free Lanes, the major free update for Starfield, introduces full free‑flight within star systems through Cruise Mode, letting players travel between planets without fast‑travel while interacting with their ship as if docked. Players can decorate interiors, use workbenches, talk to crew and rely on autopilot to slow the ship on arrival. Dynamic points of interest now appear during travel, and new encounters can pull players out of Cruise Mode for combat or exploration. Encounter frequency has been increased across the board to make space travel more event‑driven as well.
A major new resource, X‑Tech, underpins expanded customisation. Players can reroll legendary weapon effects, unlock new Tier 4 modifiers and push gear into new Superior and Exceptional quality tiers. Some fully upgraded items become Exotic. New effects include Saboteur for robot‑focused builds, Reckless for high‑risk sniping and Enigmatic for hologram‑based misdirection. A new Upgrade Module slot allows targeted stat boosts, while a Ship Optimisation Terminal lets players enhance shields, engines, grav drives and weapons directly from their ship.
Outposts receive substantial upgrades, including shared storage containers that sync resources across all bases, a new Database menu that consolidates discoveries and recipes, and a customisable Milliwhale pet unlocked through a new quest.
Starborn abilities can now be ranked up without restarting New Game+, and a Quantum Entanglement Device allows players to carry gear into new universes. Other additions include new ship modules such as a stealth‑boosting cloak, expanded planetary POIs, a new elite crew member, the Moon Jumper land vehicle, an asteroid base home, new enemy modifiers, weapon skins and camera options.
As for the new story DLC, Terran Armada, it introduces a faction of ex‑Colony War soldiers who believe themselves the rightful heirs of Earth. The expansion adds a full questline, a morally ambiguous robot companion named Delta and the new Incursion system, which adds repeatable combat scenarios ranging from small skirmishes to large‑scale ship infiltrations. Players can tune Incursion frequency, and some encounters can disrupt grav jumps or pull ships out of Cruise Mode. The DLC also adds Terran ship parts, new grounded‑style weapons and suits, a mini‑bot elite crew member, a pre‑built outpost module and new decorative items.
Both the Terran Armada Story DLC and the Free Lanes update for Starfield will be available on April 7th – the same day that the game launches for PS5.
KitGuru Says: I was a big fan of Starfield even at launch, but I also see why some were let down by the game. Will you be giving Starfield another try once the new update drops?
