Surprise update brings dedicated servers to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on PlayStation

In a surprise announcement a couple months ago, Activision unveiled and subsequently released the 7th-gen classics Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 onto modern PlayStation hardware. While relatively basic ports, both titles have received a welcome number of improvements. In an update which no one was expecting however, Black Ops 2 is now officially running on dedicated servers.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Call of Duty Updates page unveiled the latest patch for Black Ops 2 on PS4/5. Alongside a couple quality-of-life improvements such as UI and custom emblem fixes, the team revealed that BO2 now runs entirely on dedicated servers “for improved match stability and security.”

Black Ops 2 Call of Duty

For the uninitiated, up until around 2013’s COD Ghosts, Call of Duty’s multiplayer operated on peer-to-peer connections, meaning one player would host the match. Not only did this lead to less-than-stable experiences (owing to the fact that it relied on players’ internet), but was also the cause of the infamous “migrating host server” message which plagued older entries.

Another major issue which should hopefully be solved by these dedicated servers is the abundance of cheating which has occurred across both BO1 and 2 since their PS4/5 arrivals.

As of now, Black Ops 1 has yet to receive such an enhancement. That said, given the cadence of updates released so far, we can expect the switch over to happen sooner rather than later.

KitGuru says: Are you excited to see dedicated servers added? How has matchmaking been for you since it went live? What other improvements would you like to see introduced next? Let us know down below.

Studio behind the Moss Duology ‘Polyarc’ is shutting down

While VR might not be the next big step in gaming as some were expecting, the platform has spawned many excellent franchises. One such series was Moss – a VR puzzler which saw you interact with an isometric world in order to assist the mouse ‘Quill’ on her journey. Unfortunately, despite launching two VR entries and a flatscreen port of the duology, studio Polyarc has announced its closure.

Taking to LinkedIn to make the announcement, the official Polyarc page confirmed the unfortunate news, writing: “Today is the end of an era for Polyarc. After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end. As we wind down active development, we are saying our farewells to each other.”

The message continues, “Working together over all of these years has been an honor. Bringing surprise and delight to those who played our games has been a privilege. Thank you to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now finished.”

Moss Polyarc

This news comes as a bit of a surprise, given the fact that Polyarc only just launched their latest game a couple months ago: a flatscreen reinterpretation of the Moss Duology which arrived to a ‘very positive’ reception on Steam.

While far from the first studio to shut down in 2026, the closure of Polyarc is yet another blow to the games industry. Hopefully the roughly 30 developers impacted are able to find new employment.

KitGuru says: Are you surprised by the announcement? Did you ever give Moss a chance? Will VR forever remain a niche in the industry? Let us know down below.

The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mod cancelled due to Sony legal letter

Back in June, we learned about a Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod being made for the PC version of the game, one that would essentially bring back the Factions multiplayer mode the way fans wanted. Unfortunately, Sony also caught wind of the mod, and ultimately sent a cease and desist to the creator.

The mod was revealed back in June with a 25-minute gameplay video. Fans quickly took notice and began eagerly awaiting the planned September release. However, due to the mod going viral, Sony became aware of the project. The creator, Specializer, confirmed they received “a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment” and will no longer be releasing the mod.

“Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to release this month. Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released”, they wrote. “Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you'll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own. Thank you all for the incredible amount of support over the last year. I hope to bring you something bigger and better soon!”

Sony isn't the only game publisher to shut down a mod and it won't be the last. It would have been fun to see Factions return in some form, especially now that it is clear Naughty Dog won't be doing it themselves. However, Sony is also within its rights here, and it may well return to the idea of an official Last of Us multiplayer game in the future.

KitGuru Says: This mod was doing the rounds all over social media over the summer, so it isn't a surprise that Sony noticed.

Iiyama discounts Titan Falcon OLED to £299 this month

iiyama is marking the G‑Master brand’s ten‑year anniversary with a limited‑time promotion, giving UK gamers the chance to pick up the G‑Master GOB2701QSC‑B1 Titan Falcon OLED monitor for just £299.

The offer is live now through SCAN, Overclockers UK, CCL and Laptops Direct, running until 27th September or while stocks last. At £299, this is one of the most aggressive OLED prices we’ve seen for a 1440p 280Hz Tandem WOLED panel, making it a standout deal for anyone looking to upgrade to OLED.

The G‑Master Titan Falcon is built around a 2560×1440 META 3.0 Tandem OLED panel with a 280Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms response time. As an OLED panel, you'll benefit from the deep blacks and high contrast ratios that everyone raves about, along with the excellent motion clarity and low latency needed for competitive gaming. As you would expect from a modern gaming monitor, Adaptive Sync is also supported, so you'll never have to worry about screen tearing.

If you want to know more about this monitor then stay tuned, as we have a review in the works right now.

KitGuru Says: OLED is well worth the upgrade, especially at £299. Are you considering making the jump to OLED this year?

Cyberpunk 2077 is also coming to Battle.net, alongside Overwatch collaboration

Last month we learned that CD Projekt Red would soon be putting The Witcher 3 on Battle.net, but it turns out that's not all. Cyberpunk 2077 will soon also be sold through Blizzard's store, and new details about other upcoming collaborations have also been revealed.

At this year’s BlizzCon, CD Projekt Red took part in the 30 years of Battle.net panel, revealing that Cyberpunk 2077 will soon be available through Battle.net, alongside The Witcher 3 Remastered, the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion and eventually, The Witcher 4 too.

As for collaborations, we already know that a Geralt-themed skin will soon be available in Diablo 4, given out to any battle.net player who pre-orders Songs of the Past or buys the game at launch. However, there will be more Witcher-themed content added to Diablo 4 in 2027, likely a mini battle pass, similar to recent DOOM and Overwatch collaborations.

On top of that, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners skins will be coming to Overwatch sometime in 2027 as well.

KitGuru Says: While I am a huge Diablo fan, I've already got The Witcher 3 on Steam, so I'll be missing out on the limited-time Geralt skin when it does drop.

Blizzard officially announces StarCraft shooter with 3-minute trailer

Blizzard has officially announced its new StarCraft shooter at BlizzCon this weekend. Simply titled STARCRAFT, the game marks the franchise’s long‑awaited return and confirms that the shooter rumours circulating earlier this year were accurate.

Blizzard debuted a three‑minute cinematic trailer showing Dominion marines answering a call to battle against the Zerg. The project is being led by former Far Cry boss Dan Hay, who has been heading Blizzard’s survival division since 2022. Unlike Blizzard’s previous attempt at a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft: Ghost, which was built as a level‑based third‑person game, this new title will be open‑world. Outside of that though, we don't know much about gameplay.

Blizzard says the game will honour the established lore of StarCraft while also creating space for new stories. A description for the game reads: “The sons and daughters of the Dominion answered the call when mankind needed them most. Their courage held the line. Their sacrifice bought us another day. Now the call comes to you. Carry their strength forward. No matter the cost.”

Despite the announcement, STARCRAFT is still a long way off. Blizzard is targeting a 2030 release, so it may be some time before we see gameplay and even longer before players can get hands‑on time with the game.

KitGuru Says: After years of rumours and cancelled attempts, Blizzard is finally committing to a StarCraft shooter. Unfortunately, this one was announced a bit too early for my liking, as 2030 currently feels like a lifetime away.

Diablo 5 officially announced in renewed attempt to bring back Diablo 2’s magic formula

Blizzard had a major Diablo presence at BlizzCon this weekend. Not only did we get new details on what’s next for Diablo 4, but Blizzard also confirmed that Diablo 5 is already in development and scheduled to arrive much sooner than expected.

While fans waited ten years between Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, the gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5 will be far shorter. Blizzard has announced that Diablo 5 is targeting a Spring 2029 release. With the studio now shifting its focus to the next game, Diablo 4 will not receive any further expansions, although seasonal updates will continue and there will be a new playable class added to the game next year.

While Diablo 4 centred on Lilith and Mephisto, Diablo 5 will bring the franchise back to its namesake villain, pitting players directly against the Lord of Terror once again. Fans won’t have to wait until 2029 to see him return either, as Diablo 4 Season of Hell's Legacy will include boss fights against all three Prime Evils.

Diablo 5 will be arriving in Spring 2029, set roughly 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. During this period of time, Sanctuary has fallen, with the Lord of Terror succeeding in his mission to take over the land. Players will be thrust into a version of Sanctuary where Diablo has already won the war. Blizzard teases that “at the heart of Diablo 5 is a simple question – what must you become when the world has already fallen?”.

Diablo 5 will introduce a new loot system, the return of item sets, more playable classes than any previous Diablo game and a renewed effort to recapture Diablo 2‑style itemisation.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Diablo 5 director Brent Gibson explained that while the team is now focused on Diablo 5, there is still plenty of room to tell new seasonal stories within Diablo 4 in the years leading up to the next game. “The events of Diablo 5 happen 100 years after everything that’s happening with Diablo 4, and so that gives us a lot of room to kind of still ride the wave with all the fans on where the story can go as we make our way there,” said Gibson. “Continuity is something that we’re really excited about, but we don’t necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that’s going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season.”

KitGuru Says: I've really enjoyed me time with Diablo 4 but it has become clear that there are some structural aspects of this game that were not popular. The shift to an MMO-style shared open world rather than traditional ARPG zones and co-op was perhaps the biggest point of contention. Despite this set-up being primed for genuinely new seasonal events, most Diablo seasons have instead relied on recycled content. Hopefully these are the sort of pitfalls Blizzard will avoid when ushering in Diablo 5.

Blizzard teases The Last Titan and updates WoW roadmap

Blizzard has shared a new roadmap for World of Warcraft: Midnight, outlining the final updates for the expansion and giving us a clearer idea of when to expect the reveal of The Last Titan, the concluding chapter of the Worldsoul Saga.

The next phase begins with Echoes of the Worldcore, an update focused on new story quests and seasonal events. That will be followed by Midnight: Eclipse in the winter, a major patch that introduces a new zone called The Mantle Vault, a new dungeon, a new lair, fresh delves and a new raid. The update also brings a new legendary caster weapon, additional paladin options for Forsaken, Night Elf and Troll characters, and further improvements to housing.

Midnight: Eclipse will lead directly into Season 3, which continues the storyline and sets the stage for the next expansion.

In 2027, Blizzard will move into the final act of the Worldsoul Saga. The Last Titan will be revealed in the spring, marking the third and final expansion in the trilogy that began with The War Within back in 2024. Based on Blizzard’s established cadence, a spring reveal would typically point to an early 2028 release window, keeping the two‑year cycle intact.

KitGuru Says: Have you been keeping up with the WoW: Midnight updates this year? Are you going to be returning for The Last Titan?

Warcraft 3: Reforged gets major free update and new Forsaken Kingdom expansion

Warcraft 3: Reforged is finally getting a major update, including the first new RTS campaign for the Warcraft series in more than twenty years. Blizzard has announced a 3.0 overhaul for Reforged, alongside a brand‑new expansion.

Since the launch of World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s original RTS campaigns have largely been left behind. Warcraft 3: Reforged was intended to bring that era back, but the remaster did not meet fan expectations and sales suffered as a result.

Blizzard is now looking to set things right with the Warcraft 3: Reforged 3.0 update. The patch includes a graphical overhaul, performance improvements and a revamped World Editor for custom matches and modding.

Alongside the free update, Blizzard is releasing a new paid expansion: Warcraft 3: Forsaken Kingdom, the first new Warcraft RTS campaign since 2003. The expansion is already available through Battle.net.

KitGuru Says: Warcraft 3 has been overdue for meaningful support, so seeing Blizzard return to it with a full campaign is a welcome surprise. Will you be picking up the Forsaken Kingdom expansion?

Blizzard revives Heroes of the Storm with new hero update

We knew to expect the return of StarCraft at BlizzCon this week, but we weren't expecting to see a revival of Heroes of the Storm. Blizzard's MOBA game is officially back, with a new hero joining the roster this month.

In a surprise announcement at BlizzCon this weekend, Blizzard revealed Xal'Atath, the latest hero for Heroes of the Storm. Xal'Atath arrives from the Warcraft franchise and marks the first new hero added to the game since 2020.

Blizzard largely stopped working on and promoting Heroes of the Storm after 2020, with most updates limited to bug fixes and balance tweaks. This was despite the fact that many players considered HOTS one of the strongest MOBAs on the market, and for a time, its esports scene looked like it could stand alongside Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Xal'Atath will not be the only new addition either. Blizzard has confirmed that a second new hero is already in development, although details have not yet been shared. For now, players can look forward to Xal'Atath’s arrival on the 28th of September.

KitGuru Says: Heroes of the Storm had a passionate community and a genuinely strong design philosophy, so seeing Blizzard return to it is a welcome surprise. With new heroes now on the way, it will be interesting to see how far this revival goes.

World of Warcraft: Forever announced at BlizzCon

Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft: Forever, a new project developed by the Classic team that revisits the original level‑60 era of WoW. Unlike WoW Classic, which preserves the vanilla experience as it was, Forever introduces new zones, quests and features set within that first year of the game.

World of Warcraft: Forever brings new content to the original timeline. Players will explore Dalaran, alongside other new zones to be confirmed later on. Zones already present in vanilla WoW have been reworked to support new story content as well. A new playable race, the Skyborne Elves, will also join the game in WoW: Forever.

Alongside the new race and zones, Forever includes two raids, nine dungeons and more than 1000 quests, reinforcing the idea that this is Vanilla WoW Extended, rather than just a snapshot of the game as it was.

World of Warcraft: Forever arrives on the 4th of November. BlizzCon attendees can try it early, and a public beta will roll out next week for those unable to be there this weekend.

KitGuru Says: WoW Classic has always been about preservation, but Forever takes a different approach by expanding that era with new content. Are you looking forward to this? Or will you be sticking with Retail / Classic in their current forms?

New Steam Client beta adds Big Art Mode and screensaver options

Valve has released a new Steam Client beta update that introduces a “Big Art Mode” layout and a dedicated screensaver feature for Big Picture Mode. The update aims to refresh the handheld- and TV-focused interface while adding extra UI customisation options.

Big Art Mode adjusts the standard side-by-side interface layout, making it more similar to the PS5 Home screen. It allocates most of the screen to artwork for the selected game while displaying other titles in smaller windows near the bottom.

Alongside this visual refresh, the new screensaver function triggers when Steam remains idle for a set period. Users can choose to display full-screen game art, show recent screenshots, or load custom screensavers from a designated directory.

To access these features, users must opt into the beta channel through Steam's system settings menu. Once updated, players can toggle the layout under Settings > Home, while screensaver options are in Settings > Customisation. Beyond visual tweaks, this beta version delivers faster startup performance, optimised game recording in select DX12 titles, and fixes for frame-rate hitches when capturing screenshots during DX11 and DX12 gameplay on Windows.

KitGuru says: Customisable screensavers and a larger art layout in Big Picture Mode make Steam feel much more tailored to handhelds and living room setups. Do you like the looks of the new Big Art Mode?

Audio-Technica announces ATH-AL5NC open-back wireless headphones with 75 hour battery life

Audio-Technica has announced the ATH-AL5NC open-back wireless headphones, combining an open-back driver design with Bluetooth connectivity. Available now, the 240g headset features 53mm dynamic drivers, up to 75 hours of continuous battery life, and high-resolution LDAC support.

The 53mm dynamic drivers deliver high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz audio via LDAC, AAC, and SBC codecs. Open-back housings assist airflow to reduce heat accumulation, paired with a lightweight 240g frame to lower clamping pressure. The battery delivers up to 75 hours of continuous playback, while a 15-minute quick charge provides up to eight hours of listening time. Dual-device connection is managed through multipoint Bluetooth pairing, and an integrated microphone accommodates calls and gaming communication.

Software customisation relies on the Audio-Technica Connect app, giving users access to adjustable EQ settings, codec toggles, low-latency gaming modes, and a headphone locator. An integrated Soundscape function provides ambient nature audio and masking noise, alongside “Noise Reduction” and “Sound Leakage Reduction” modes. For wired configurations, Audio-Technica includes a carrying pouch and a 1.2m cable equipped with a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug and inline microphone controls.

The Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC open-back wireless headphones are now available for $279.

KitGuru says: Although they're an interesting set, the lack of 2.4G wireless connectivity means they aren't really suitable for wireless gaming. Fortunately, you can plug in the cable to solve that.

MSI has announced the Pro Max 341QPXW14G, a 34-inch ultrawide QD-OLED monitor designed specifically for Mac workflows. Built around a 21:9 UWQHD 3440×1440 panel, the display offers a 144Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response time, and deep macOS integration through dedicated app support.

Equipped with a 5th-Gen QD-OLED panel, the Pro Max 341QPXW14G QD-OLED monitor uses an RGB Stripe sub-pixel layout to improve text clarity. MSI says the Penta Tandem technology increases luminous efficiency by 30%, while the DarkArmor layer delivers 40% deeper blacks, plus 3H surface hardness and 2.5× scratch resistance. macOS integration relies on the MSI M-Mate app, enabling M-Sync Mode so users can adjust brightness and volume directly via MacBook keyboard keys. Regarding colour performance, the display is Pantone and Pantone SkinTone Validated, covering 99% DCI-P3 and 97.4% Adobe RGB with Delta E ≤2 accuracy and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification.

The monitor also features MSI OLED Care 3.0, which uses AI sensors to detect static content and user presence to mitigate burn-in, extending the mandatory panel refresh cycle to 24 hours. Eye-care features include TÜV-certified hardware blue light reduction, VisiClarity anti-glare treatment, and a 14-point Customizable HDR curve.

To support multi-system setups, the display includes a 3-Device KVM with KVM 2.0 cross-device data transfers, and dual USB-C ports provide up to 98W and 15W Power Delivery. Included is a three-way ergonomic stand. The monitor is now available in the US for $749.90.

IKEA Skyrim mod adds sentient shelf companion to the game

We're 15 years on from the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and we are still getting hugely interesting mods. This week, IKEA tried its hand at a Skyrim mod, adding in a new quest that rewards players with a sentient shelving unit, voiced by none other than Matt Berry.

The KALLAX Storageborn mod is now live and available to download directly in‑game through the Creations menu. It adds a new quest, new loot and, most importantly, a sentient shelving‑unit companion that can collect and organise loot for you, helping you avoid becoming over‑encumbered.

“During your adventure, build your very own Kallax Storageborn. With unfathomable storage capacity, the ability to collect loot, tidy up your homestead and be summoned with a new Thu’um, even when not a companion, Kallax will change your clutter management forever”, the mod description reads.

Aside from having the ultimate loot collection and organisation tool, players will also get two new items – the Meatball helmet and the Allenblade. If you want to, you can even have the shelf follow you around the world as a companion character, giving you plenty of storage on the go. If you don't want a shelf as a companion, the new in-game quest also gives you a new spell to summon the shelf whenever you need it.

KitGuru Says: I never thought we would see an official IKEA game mod but here we are. Will you be trying this out on your Skyrim save?

Exceleram warns RAM shortage is still escalating

Exceleram’s VP of Product, Steffen Eisenstein, has shared a detailed breakdown of the ongoing RAM shortage, warning that the industry is still only at the beginning of the crisis. According to Eisenstein, the AI boom has pushed memory inventories to their limits, and securing DRAM has become harder than ever.

Eisenstein says the situation began far earlier than many realised. “For us as a RAM manufacturer, the crisis began as early as the fourth quarter of 2025,” he explains. “In October last year, we saw DRAM prices rise sharply for the first time, the price jumps at the time were already extreme.” As partners recognised the looming shortage, Exceleram saw larger orders and depleted inventories while new DRAM became increasingly expensive.

Even for long‑standing manufacturers, the current environment is unusual. “It has never been this difficult to secure DRAM,” Eisenstein says. Major suppliers saw record stock‑market gains, and in December 2025, Micron officially withdrew from the consumer RAM and SSD market. Meanwhile, medium‑sized companies struggled to keep PC assembly profitable. “High RAM prices are making cost calculations difficult,” he notes, with some partners abandoning the segment entirely.

By early 2026, analysts and media outlets were openly referring to a “memory crisis”. Exceleram’s inventories were empty, production costs were high, and demand collapsed. “We even canceled our Computex booth because under these circumstances, it did not make sense to find new resellers,” Eisenstein says. Supply delays followed, and while production continued for existing partners, sales dropped sharply.

Demand began to recover slightly in Q2 and Q3, but the underlying issues remained. Eisenstein recalls a conversation with a journalist who told him: “People have accepted that RAM has become more expensive and is not going to get cheaper again.” Even so, he warns that high prices have led to lower demand and tighter competition, with margins far smaller than they appear.

The most concerning development, according to Eisenstein, is that the crisis is still escalating. “In some cases, we have not received any offers for the chips we need for weeks,” he writes, adding that supply security is deteriorating to the point where it is slowing down the development of new consumer hardware. “That is the uncomfortable truth: The RAM crisis is far from over. It may have only just begun.”

KitGuru Says: Anyone who was hoping for the PC hardware market to bounce back in 2027 may end up being disappointed. If Exceleram are right on this, then things could continue to get worse until new production lines open up to increase capacity, but this is a process that takes a lot of time and money.

Marvel’s Wolverine is launching to disappointing reviews

Reviews for Marvel’s Wolverine have gone live, and early impressions suggest the long wait hasn’t quite paid off. While the game delivers strong combat and polished cinematics, critics say the overall experience is held back by highly linear design, repetitive encounters and a UI that refuses to let players get lost.

Marvel’s Wolverine is currently sitting at a 77 on Metacritic and an 81 on OpenCritic. As usual, these numbers will shift as more outlets publish reviews, and there are no user scores yet with the game still a week away from release.

Wolverine Pre-order

Across the board, critics generally agree that Insomniac has nailed the fundamentals, combat feels weighty, animations are sharp and the cinematic presentation is strong. The problem is everything wrapped around those strengths. The game’s level design is described as narrow and unadventurous, with enemy variety failing to evolve enough to support the full runtime. Several reviewers also point to the UI as a major contributor to the game’s overly guided feel, thanks to visible scent trails, objective markers and the usual white paint and blinking lights combining to create an experience where exploration rarely matters.

The end result, based on early consensus, is a game that plays well moment‑to‑moment but doesn’t offer much freedom or discovery.

Marvel's Wolverine will officially launch on September 15th. Unlike the Spider-Man games, Wolverine is going to remain exclusive to PS5 consoles, but if sales take a hit, we may see Sony buckle on this to recoup investment.

KitGuru Says: These scores may shift as more reviews land, but typically, we see review scores going down slightly over time, rather than creeping up. User reviews and critic reviews often have very different scores though, so we'll have a clearer picture of how well Wolverine landed with the masses next week.
