In the final months of 2025, we began hearing that Apple may be on the hunt for a new CEO, as Tim Cook was expected to step down sometime in 2026 after leading Apple since the passing of Steve Jobs in 2011. Now, it has been confirmed that Cook is indeed departing as Apple CEO. 

Apple confirmed last night that Tim Cook would be stepping down as CEO but would remain with the company as Executive Chairman. In his place, John Ternus will become the new CEO of Apple.

Apple has apparently been preparing for this since last year, when Ternus emerged as a frontrunner for the CEO position. For those who don't know, Ternus has worked at Apple for around 25 years and has been a major contributor to generations of iPhones, iPads, AirPods, Watches and other products.

At this point, Apple has cemented itself as one of the biggest tech companies in the world, in large part thanks to the dominance of the iPhone. Ternus will be leading Apple during an interesting time with experimental ideas like the foldable iPhone coming up.

Starting on September 1, Ternus will lead one of the world's most valuable companies, but if you're not a dedicated Apple enthusiast, you've probably never heard of this man, who has largely remained out of the spotlight until now.

The transition has been expected for some time and ends one of the longer and more impactful runs a CEO has had at any company. Cook had inherited a company that many industry watchers and enthusiasts struggled to separate from its famed founder. What he leaves behind is a $4 trillion business with annual revenue that has more than quadrupled on his watch.

In an announcement that largely came out of the blue, and despite the many assertions to the contrary by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook, is preparing to step down as soon as September 2026. Even so, Cook is not heading into the proverbial sunset, but would stay on in an advisory and ceremonial capacity on Apple's board.
