Japanese electronics giant NEC stopped development of gate-based superconducting quantum computer hardware at the end of March 2026. According to Japanese media reports, NEC concluded that the commercialization timeline for a physical quantum computer was too long and that hardware investment would be unlikely to deliver commensurate returns. The decision also reportedly prompted quantum R&D researchers to join Fujitsu.

Kenmec Group founder and president Frank Hsieh said on August 19 that two of the company's new businesses have taken shape, with Taisic Materials focusing on silicon carbide (SiC), a third-generation semiconductor material, and Kentec targeting the AI data center (AIDC) market. Both companies are expected to list on Taiwan's Emerging Stock Board in October 2026.

Giant said rising raw material prices and price hikes for components from Japanese supplier Shimano, starting from August 2026, will add cost pressure, prompting the bike maker to raise prices on new products to offset the impact. Even so, the company said short-term gross margins are unlikely to hold at prior levels.

The government-organized 2026 Taiwan Innotech Expo (TIE) will open in Taipei on September 17, with the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC) Future Tech Pavilion set to showcase the latest research achievements that are ready for proof-of-concept validation and technology licensing. This year's exhibition will spotlight six priority areas: AI applications, semiconductors, precision health, space technology, disaster prevention technology, and net-zero technology.

All-photonic networks (APN) are emerging as critical infrastructure for 6G, AI computing and smart cities. Nvidia's plan to expand its AI footprint in the US underscores why dark fiber is essential for distributed AI computing centers, according to Chau-Lyan Chang, director general of Taiwan's National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC).
