StarCraft’s back, but you’ll be pulling a trigger instead of building a base

StarCraft is finally coming back, and Blizzard’s picked the one genre nobody saw coming.

Dan Hay confirmed the franchise’s return on stage at BlizzCon 2026, with a 2030 release date attached. It’s the first proper new StarCraft since 2017’s Remastered, and rather than another RTS entry, this one’s a shooter. Bold move for a series built entirely on base-building and unit micro, but if anyone can pull off the pivot, it’s probably the team behind a Dominion soldier’s story.

The reveal had been rumoured for months. Back in January, reports suggested a BlizzCon announcement was likely, and just this month came word that Nexon could be circling StarCraft’s development rights entirely. Whatever’s happening behind the scenes, Blizzard clearly wanted to get ahead of it with something concrete.

STARCRAFT – Cinematic announcement

The cinematic follows a young recruit through Dominion ground combat training, all while Dominion propaganda plays over the top selling the war as humanity’s last stand. He appears to die in battle before the 2030 date drops, closing on a grim “join the call” message. It’s moody, it’s a bit on the nose with the propaganda angle, and I reckon that’s exactly the point, Blizzard’s leaning into the Dominion’s manipulative messaging rather than playing it straight.

Starcraft

Four years is a long wait, but after nearly a decade of silence, at least StarCraft fans finally have something to argue about again.
